  • In this study the influence of Bradykinin, a biogenic polypeptide, on the excretory function of the dog kidney was investigated, utilizing the clearance and stop-flow method. The results are summarized as follows; 1) Bradykinin administered intravenously elicited a marked antidiuresis. 2) When given into the renal artery, however, prompt increase of the urine flow, sodium excretion and free water clearance without significant change in the glomerular filtration rate ensued. 3) It was also effective during an osmotic diuresis with 10% Mannitol infusion, though the response was not so marked. 4) The stop-flow experiment showed that sodium reabsorption in the proximal tubules is inhibited by the infusion of bradykinin into the renal artery. It was thus concluded that the diuretic effect of bradykinin given intra-arterially results from the inhibition of sodium transport in the proximal tubules.

  • Food allergy is an important public health problem affecting 5% of infants and children in Korea. Food allergy is defined as an immune response triggered by food proteins. Food allergy is highly associated with atopic dermatitis and is one of the most common triggers of potentially fatal anaphylaxis in the community. Sensitization to food allergens can occur in the gastrointestinal tract (class 1 food allergy) or as a consequence of cross reactivity to structurally homologous inhalant allergens (class 2 food allergy). Allergenicity of food is largely determined by structural aspects, including cross-reactivity and reduced or enhanced allergenicity with cooking that convey allergenic characteristics to food. Management of food allergy currently focuses on dietary avoidance of the offending foods, prompt recognition and treatment of allergic reactions, and nutritional support. This review includes definitions and examines the prevalence and management of food allergies and the characteristics of food allergens.

  • Rapidity and accuracy are important considerations when a drone is employed in a wide surveillance area to detect a target. They are more important when the scope of application is a search and rescue operation or the monitoring of natural disasters, which may require prompt warnings and response. During the actual operation of a drone, rapidity and accuracy are associated with the change in the altitude of the drone. The aim of this study is to analyze the characteristics of drones at varying altitudes and prove that altitude is a relevant factor in the performance of drones. Herein, the characteristics of the drone at varying altitudes were analyzed through several search simulations. The results suggest that a high-altitude drone is relatively advantageous compared to a low-altitude drone in a probability-based target search, and that the search altitude is also a very important and fundamental factor in target search by drones.

  • Spontaneous pneumothorax is the sudden collapse of a lung usually caused by air leaking from a sub-visceral pleural bleb. Response to closed thoracotomy, needle aspiration and simple observation is usually prompt and effective. But in some cases, these are unsuccessful and open thoracotomy is indicated. Author reviewed 37 cases of open thoracotomy in spontaneous pneumothorax experienced in the Dept. of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Pusan National University Hospital, since Jan., 1980 to Dec., 1984. The results were as follows: 1. The causes of spontaneous pneumothorax: 73.0% was primary, 27.0% was secondary origin. 2. The most frequent age group of the patient: Between 11 and 30 years old. 3. All of te patient were male. 4. The side of open thoracotomy: 58.8% was right side, 8.8% was both side. 5. The most common indication of open thoracotomy; Persistent air leakage. 6. The most frequent sites of bleb or bullae: A-P segment in the L.U.L. and apical segment in the R.U.L.

  • There was clinical study to support the efficacy that the anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of deoxyribonuclease, bromelain helped to reduce symptoms of inflammation. The current study investigated the effects of deoxyribonuclease, bromelain on local traumatic edema. The author used a drug containing proteolytic and mucolytic enzymes, deoxyribonuclease and bromelain, into 61 patients from 16 to 89 years old. The therapeutic response and tolerance had been excellent, which was permitted to a swift resolution on local traumatic edema and a prompt functional reestablishment. These results demonstrated that the drug was effective in local edema symptoms, pains and improving general condition suffering from trauma. Consequently, the use of the proteolytic and mucolytic enzyme$(Deanase^{(R)})$ require improvement in the rehabilitation of the injured.

  • In recent years, falls among elderly people have gained serious attention as a major cause of injuries. Falls often lead to fatal consequences due to lack of prompt response and rescue. Therefore, a more accurate fall detection system and an effective feature extraction technique are required to prevent and reduce the risk of such incidents. In this paper, we proposed an efficient feature extraction technique based on multiple sliding windows and validated it through a series of experiments using supervised learning algorithms. The experiments were conducted using the public datasets obtained from tri-axial accelerometers. The results depicted that extraction of the feature from adjacent sliding windows led to high accuracy in supervised machine learning-based fall detection. Also, the experiments conducted in this study suggested that the best accuracy can be achieved by keeping the window size as small as 2 seconds. With the kNN classifier and dataset from wearable sensors, the experiments achieved accuracy rates of 94%.

  • Impact forces induced by external object collisions can cause serious damages to civil engineering structures. While accurate and prompt identification of such impact forces is a critical task in structural health monitoring, it is not readily feasible for civil structures because the force measurement is extremely challenging and the force location is unpredictable for full-scale field structures. This study proposes a novel approach for identification of impact force including its location and time history using a small number of multi-metric observations. The method combines an augmented Kalman filter (AKF) and Genetic algorithm for accurate identification of impact force. The location of impact force is statistically determined in the way to minimize the AKF response estimate error at measured locations and then time history of the impact force is accurately constructed by optimizing the error co-variances of AKF using Genetic algorithm. The efficacy of proposed approach is numerically demonstrated using a truss and a plate model considering the presence of modelling error and measurement noises.

  • Acute fulminant myocarditis (AFM) occurs as an inflammatory response to an initial myocardial insult. Its rapid and deadly progression calls for prompt diagnosis with aggressive treatment measures. The demonstration of its excellent recovery potential has led to increasing use of mechanical circulatory support, especially extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Arrhythmias, organ failure, elevated cardiac biomarkers, and decreased ventricular function at presentation predict requirement for ECMO. In these patients, ECMO should be considered earlier as the clinical course of AFM can be unpredictable and can lead to rapid haemodynamic collapse. Key uncertainties that clinicians face when managing children with AFM such as timing of initiation of ECMO and left ventricular decompression need further investigation.

  • Recently, due to the development of attack techniques that can circumvent existing information protection systems, continuous threats in a form unrecognized by the user have threatened information assets. Therefore, it is necessary to support the prompt responses to anticipated attempts of APT attacks, bypass access attacks, and encryption packet attacks, which the existing systems have difficulty defending against through a single response, and to continuously monitor information protection systems with a defense strategy based on Indicators of Attack (IOA). In this paper, I suggest a centralized intelligent information protection system to support the intelligent response to a violation by discerning important assets through prevention control in a performance impact assessment about information properties in order to block the attack routes of APT; establishing information control policies through weakness/risk analyses in order to remove the risks in advance; establishing detection control by restricting interior/exterior bypass networks to server access and monitoring encrypted communications; and lastly, performing related corrective control through backup/restoration.
