We selected, in previous research, a major DNA Marker 235bp of ILSTS035 microsatellite locus in progeny test Hanwoo chromosome 6. We apply a major DNA Marker 235bp to perormance valuation Hanwoo chomosome 6. We use bootstrap BCa method and calculate confidence interval. A major DNA Marker 235bp is verified that it does not have environmental effect but affects primely economic trait factor.

This study was done to estimate the effect of progeny numbers and pedigree depth on the accuracy of the estimated breeding value (EBV) using best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) method in Hanwoo. The experiment groups (sire = 100, 200, and 300; progeny = 4 and 8) were made by random sampling and by genetic evaluation of the following traits: Body weight (BW), carcass weight (CW), eye muscle area (EMA), back fat thickness (BFT) and marbling score (MS9). As a result of the genetic evaluation, the accuracy of the EBV was roughly 30 - 60% with 4 progenies, and the accuracy of the EBV increased by about 50 - 75% with 8 progenies. In the other words, when the number of progenies increased from 4 to 8, the accuracy of the EBV simultaneously increased by about 15 - 20%. Moreover, when the number of sires was higher, variations in the accuracy of the EBV within the groups for each trait decreased. Therefore, this result indicates that not only the number of progeny but also the number of sires can affect the accuracy of the EBV. Consequently, collecting information on the progeny and careful management of that information are very important things in the Hanwoo breeding system. Therefore, the EBV can show more precise results when conducting genetic evaluations.

This study was conducted to estimate the genetic parameters and their relationships with weight traits of the steers and bulls in the Hanwoo population. The data used were weights and weight gain of performance and progeny test from 6,024 heads of Hanwoo. Data of performance test consisted of total 3,737 heads raised from August, 1989 to September, 2005. The number of the records of progeny test was total 2,287 heads from August, 1996 to June, 2004. The heritabilities and correlations for the body weights at the ages of 6 months, 12 months and 24 months and average daily gain were estimated by DFREML. Overall means and standard deviations of body weights at 6 and 12 months of age and average daily gain(ADG) from the data of performance test were 181.72±30.22kg, 351.48±40.24kg, 998.07±153.84g, respectively. Overall means and standard deviations of body weights at 6, 12, and 24 month of age and ADG from the data of progeny test were 169.18±32.82kg, 229.37±44.57kg, 570.45±64.36kg and 739.41± 172.14g, respectively. The heritability estimates of the body weight at 6, 12 month and ADG from the performance test were 0.54±0.06, 0.60±0.06 and 0.23±0.04, respectively. The heritability estimates of the body weight at 6, 12, 24 month and ADG from the progeny test were 0.80±0.08, 0.50±0.07, 0.46±0.07 and 0.07±0.03, respectively.
To advance the effectiveness of the current Hanwoo improvement system, we developed a general simulation that compared a series of breeding schemes under realistic user circumstances. We call this system the Integrated General Model (IGM) and it allows users to control the breeding schemes and selection methods by manipulating the input parameters. The Current Hanwoo Performance and Progeny Test (CHPPT) scheme was simulated with a Modified Hanwoo Performance and Progeny Test (MHPPT) scheme using a Hanwoo Breeding Farm cow population of the Livestock Improvement Main Center (LOMC) of the National Agricultural Cooperatives Federation (NACF). To compare the two schemes, a new method, the Simple Hanwoo Performance Test (SHPT), which uses ultrasound technology for measuring the carcass traits of live animals, was developed. These three models, including the CHPPT, incorporated three types of selection criteria: phenotype (PH), true breeding value (TBV), and estimated breeding value (EBV). The simulation was scheduled to mimic an actual Hanwoo breeding program; thus, the simulation was run to include the years 1983-2020 for each breeding method and was replicated 10 times. The parameters for simulation were derived from the literature. Approximately 642,000 animals were simulated per replication for the CHPPT scheme; 129,000 animals were simulated for the MHPPT scheme and 112,000 animals for the SHPT scheme. Throughout the 38-year simulation, all estimated parameters of each simulated population, regardless of population size, showed results similar to the input parameters. The deviations between input and output values for the parameters in the large populations were statistically acceptable. In this study, we integrated three simulated models, including the CHPPT, in an attempt to achieve the greatest genetic gains within major economic traits including body weight at 12 months of age (BW12), body weight at 24 months of age (BW24), average daily gain from 6 to 12 months (ADG), carcass weight (CWT), carcass longissimus muscle area (CLMA), carcass marbling score (CMS), ultrasound scanned longissimus muscle area (ULMA), and ultrasound scanned marbling score (UMS).
This study was conducted to investigate the genetic correlations among the traits used to select young bulls and proven bulls in Hanwoo Performance and Progeny Test Program in Korea. For the estimation of heritabilities and correlations among the growth traits of bulls and carcass traits of progeny steers, 2,532 records of performance tested bull calves and 1,819 records of progeny tested steers were collected from Livestock Improvement Main Center (LIMC), National Agricultural Cooperative Federation (NACF). Fixed effects of mixed model for each traits were selected by using stepwise regression analysis and prior values of variance components were estimated by MTDFREML. The prior values of variance components were estimated with pairwise 2 traits model followed by single trait analysis. The estimated heritability of backfat thickness(BF), dressing percentage(DP), loin-eye muscle area(LMA), marbling score(MS) and weight at 12 months(WT12) was 0.51, 0.32, 0.27, 0.33, 0.50 and 0.26, respectively. Genetic correlation of WT12 of bull calves with backfat thickness, carcass weight and loin-eye muscle area of steers was positive correlation as 0.05, 0.35 and 0.21, respectively. However genetic correlation of WT12 with DP and MS showed negative correlation as 0.09 and 0.27, respectively and these negative genetic correlations implies that bulls that may be superior in carcass traits can be lost at the first step of selection and current selection method should be modified to solve this problem.
Objective: The growth, carcass and retail cut yield records on 1,428 Hanwoo steers obtained through progeny testing were analyzed in this study, and their heritability and genetic relationships among the traits were estimated using animal models. Methods: Two different models were compared in this study. Each model was fitted for different fixed class effects, date of slaughter for carcass traits and batch of progeny test live measurement traits, and a choice of covariates (carcass weight in Model 1 or backfat thickness in Model 2) for carcass traits. Results: The differences in body composition among individuals were deemed being unaffected by their age at slaughter, except for carcass weight and backfat thickness. Heritability estimates of body size measurements were 0.21 to 0.36. Heritability estimates of retail cut percentage were high (0.56 from Model 1 and 0.47 from Model 2). And the heritability estimates for loin muscle percentage were 0.36 from Model 1 and 0.42 from Model 2, which were high enough to consider direct selection on carcass cutability traits as effective. The genetic correlations between body size measurements and retail cut ratio (RCR) were close to zero. But, some negative genetic correlations were found with chest girths measured at yearling (Model 1) or at 24 months of age or with chest widths. Loin muscle ratio (LMR) was genetically negatively correlated with body weights or body size measurements, in general in Model 1. These relationships were low close to zero but positive in Model 2. Phenotypic correlation between cutability traits (RCR, LMR) and live body size measurements were moderate and negative in Model 1 while those in Model 2 were all close to zero. Conclusion: Therefore, the body weights or linear body measurements at an earlier age may not be the most desirable selection traits for exploitation of correlated responses to improve loin muscle or lean meat yield.

The aim of study was to estimate genetic parameter of carcass traits in commercial Hanwoo steer using national animal model for selection of superior bull. Analyzed data (n=5,843) on carcass traits was collected from 107,020 Hanwoo steer. The animal model was used to estimate heritability and genetic correlations. The estimated heritability of carcass traits were 0.19, 0.17, 0.20 and 0.23 for carcass weight, eye muscle area, backfat thickness and marbling score, respectively. The estimated heritability for carcass traits in commercial Hanwoo are low than estimated heritability of national progeny test population for selection of superior bull because breeding environment, genetic performance of cow and feeding day was different. Therefore, we suggests that animal model can include practical genetic variable based on national animal model to improve genetic performance in commercial Hanwoo.
A total of 6,973 steer growth records of Hanwoo breeding bull's progeny test data collected from 1989 to 2015 were analyzed to identify the most appropriate growth curve among three growth curve models (Gompertz, Logistic and von Bertalanffy). The Gompertz growth curve model equation was $W_t=990.5e^{{-2.7479e}^{-0.00241t}}$, the Logistic growth curve model equation was $W_t=772(1+8.3314e^{-0.00475t})^{-1}$, and the von Bertalanffy growth curve model equation was $W_t=1,196.4(1-0.646e^{-0.00162t})^3$. The Gompertz model parameters A, b, and k were estimated to be $990.5{\pm}10.27$, $2.7479{\pm}0.0068$, and $0.00241{\pm}0.000028$, respectively. The inflection point age was estimated to be 421 days and the weight of inflection point was 365.3 kg. The Logistic model parameters A, b, and k were estimated to be $772.0{\pm}4.12$, $8.3314{\pm}0.0453$, and $0.00475{\pm}0.000033$, respectively. The inflection point age was estimated to be 445 days and the weight of inflection point was 385.0 kg. The von Bertalanffy model parameters A, b, and k were estimated to be $1196.4{\pm}18.39$, $0.646{\pm}0.0010$, and $0.00162{\pm}0.000027$, respectively. The inflection point age was estimated to be 405 days and the weight of inflection point was 352.0 kg. Mature body weight of the von Bertalanffy model was 1196.4 kg, the Gompertz model was 990.5 kg, and the Logistic model was 772.0 kg. The difference between actual and estimated weights was similar in the Logistic model and the von Bertalanffy model. The difference between market weight and estimated market weight was the lowest in the Gompertz model. The growth curve using the von Bertalanffy model showed the lowest mean square error.
The emergence of next-generation sequencing technologies has lead to application of new computational and statistical methodologies that allow incorporating genetic information from entire genomes of many individuals composing the population. For example, using single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) obtained from whole genome amplification platforms such as the Ilummina BovineSNP50 chip, many researchers are actively engaged in the genetic evaluation of cattle livestock using whole genome relationship analyses. In this study, we estimated the genomic relationship matrix (GRM) and compared it with one computed using a pedigree relationship matrix (PRM) using a population of Hanwoo. This project is a preliminary study that will eventually include future work on genomic selection and prediction. Data used in this study were obtained from 187 blood samples consisting of the progeny of 20 young bulls collected after parentage testing from the Hanwoo improvement center, National Agriculture Cooperative Federation as well as 103 blood samples from the progeny of 12 proven bulls collected from farms around the Kyong-buk area in South Korea. The data set was divided into two cases for analysis. In the first case missing genotypes were included. In the second case missing genotypes were excluded. The effect of missing genotypes on the accuracy of genomic relationship estimation was investigated. Estimation of relationships using genomic information was also carried out chromosome by chromosome for whole genomic SNP markers based on the regression method using allele frequencies across loci. The average correlation coefficient and standard deviation between relationships using pedigree information and chromosomal genomic information using data which was verified using a parentage test andeliminated missing genotypes was $0.81{\pm}0.04$ and their correlation coefficient when using whole genomic information was 0.98, which was higher. Variation in relationships between non-inbred half sibs was $0.22{\pm}0.17$ on chromosomal and $0.22{\pm}0.04$ on whole genomic SNP markers. The variations were larger and unusual values were observed when non-parentage test data were included. So, relationship matrix by genomic information can be useful for genetic evaluation of animal breeding.
