Spiral tube heat exchangers can find numerous applications in many engineering field. Flow in spital tubes is interest to engineers due to occurrence of secondary flow which enhances the cross-sectional mixing and the heat transfer rate. In the present study, an incompressible viscous 3-D flow in spiral tubes with rectangular cross-section of various torsion rate and Reynolds number is studied by using a finite volume method. It is shown that the axial velocity profile is affected by the secondary flow motion. Because there is some difference from correlation proposed by Hur et al., a lot of analysis and arrangement of experimental results are needed. This study showed the results of variation of hydrodynamic entry length for torsion and Re numbers.

Flow pulsation in the gap connecting with two parallel channels is investigated by RANS and URANS approaches. The two parallel channels are connected by a small channel called for a gap. The parallel channels are designed to have different cross section area with its ratio of 0.5. Computations are conducted using a CFX 11.0 code. The bulk Reynolds number is 60,000. Predicted results are compared with the previous experimental result. Mean velocity profile at the center of gap region are compared with experiments for its validation. Spectral analysis on the lateral velocity in the center of the gap is presented. Auto and cross correlation for the axial-flow velocity pattern are presented. The unsteady structure of the flow pulsation was visualized in the region of the gap in the parallel channel.

In recent years, there has been an upsurge for the usage of buckling restrained braces (BRB) rather than ordinary braces, as they have evidently performed better. If the overall brace buckling is ignored, BRBs are proven to have higher energy absorption capacity and flexibility. This article aims to deliberate an economically efficient yet adequate type of all-steel BRB, comprised of the main components as in traditional ones, such as : (1) a steel core that holds all axial forces and (2) a steel restrainer tube that hinders buckling to occurr in the core; there is a more practical detailing in the BRB system due to the elimination of a filling mortar. An investigation has been conducted for the proposed rectangular-tube core BRB and it is hysteric behavioral results have been compared to previous researches conducted on a structure containing a similar plate core profile that has the same cross-sectional area in its core. A loss of strength is known to occur in the BRB when the limiting condition of local buckling is not satisfied, thus causing instability. This typically occurs when the thickness of the restrainer tube's wall is smaller than the cross-sectional area of the core plate or its width. In this study, a parametric investigation for BRBs with different formations has been performed to verify the effect of the design parameters such as different core section profiles, restraining member width to thickness ratio and relative cross-sectional area of the core to restrainer, on buckling load evaluation. The proposed BRB investigation results have also been presented and compared to past BRB researches with a plate profile as the core section, and the advantages and disadvantages of this configuration have been discussed, and it is concluded that BRBs with tubular core section exhibit a better seismic performance than the ones with a plate core profile.
Centrifugal pumps consume considerable amounts of energy in various industrial applications. Therefore, improving the efficiency of pumps machine is a crucial challenge in industrial world. This paper presents numerical investigation of flow characteristics in volutes of centrifugal pumps in order to compare the energy consumption. A wide range of volumetric flow rate has been investigated for each case. The standard k-${\varepsilon}$ is adopted as the turbulence model. The impeller rotation is simulated employing the Multi Reference Frames(MRF) method. First, two different conventional design methods, i.e., the constant angular momentum(CAM) and the constant mean velocity (CMV) are studied and compared to a baseline volute model. The CAM volute profile is a logarithmic spiral. The CMV volute profile shape is an Archimedes spiral curve. The modified volute models show lower head value than baseline volute model, but in case of efficiency graph, CAM curve has higher values than others. Finally for this part, CAM curve is selected to be used in the simulation of different cross-section shape. Two different types of cross-section are generated. One is a simple rectangular shape, and the other one is fan shape. In terms of different cross-section shape, simple rectangular geometry generated higher head and efficiency. Overall, simulation results showed that the volute designed using constant angular momentum(CAM) method has higher characteristic performances than one by CMV volute.
The purpose of this study is to develop a dress form for elderly women according to their somatotype to be used for improving the fit of garments and patterns. Analyzing each somatotype, there was a significant difference among the 4 somatotypes in most of measure items. Bend-forward Group had shorter front length items. Abdomen-fat Group had lower upper-body values than Average Group and similar lower-body values to Fat Group. In most items except height, Fat Group had the biggest values. Analyzing the mean cross-section according to the section measurement parts, no difference existed in shoulder part and under bust part. However, in upper bust, bust, waist, abdomen, high hip, and hip parts, a significant difference existed. Also, according to the results of the mean cross-section as well as the average cross overlap section for each somatotype, there was a significant difference among the four somatotypes. Thus, Abdomen-fat Group and Fat Group were similar, while Bend-forward Group and Average Group were alike. According to the increase of age, lower body tended to have more conspicuous changes. Analyzing the profile of somatotypes, there existed a obvious significant difference among the 4 somatotypes, implying that the characteristics of somatotype need to be reflected when to develop dress forms for elderly women. Therefore, these differences must be an essential factor in pattern design. Comparing the current dress form with the dress form developed with simulation, we could find that a dress form developed for elderly women which reflects the characteristics of body shape is much better than a dress form developed by simple size variation such as small, medium and large size divisions to improve the fit of garments and pattern designs.

This paper presents a geometric method that can detect and compute all conic sections in the intersection of two tori. Conic sections contained in a torus must be circles. Thus, when two tori intersect in a conic section, the intersection curve must be a circle as well. Circles in a torus are classified into profile circles, cross-sectional circlet, and Yvone-Villarceau circles. Based on a geometric classification of these circles, we present a procedural method that can detect and construct all intersection circles between two tori. All computations can be carried out using simple geometric operations only: e.g., circle-circle intersections, circle-line intersections, vector additions, and inner products. Consequently, this simple structure makes our algorithm robust and efficient, which is an important advantage of our geometric approach over other conventional methods of surface intersection.
A boundary condition reflecting automatically, regardless of the direction of the gas flow, the pressure drop due to the entrance and exit effect occurred at a connection of two elements with different cross-sections in calculating the pressure profile of a vacuum network composed of many chambers and pipes which have different shape and vacuum properties was developed. The method of correcting the pressure drop in an element of varying cross-section like a cone was also introduced to keep the system free from directionality. The developed boundary conditions are applied as an example to a linear composed vacuum system to show how to make a set of simultaneous equations based on the particle balance equation and how to obtain its solution.

The study examines two different sites to analyze the difference of stream channel profile between two different landuse areas on Neponset River, Boston, MA. Landuse represents the current status of land in terms of human, agricultural or forest, industry and environmental activity types. According to the previous research, forest and urban area are significantly distinguished in chemical characteristic, shape and bed load of the stream. On the chosen sites, I look at the cross-section profile, the slope, velocity, and roughness of the channels. With the data collected at the site I determined the value for the channel bed material using Manning's equation, and compared with the result of HEC-RAS model with the cross-section profile data I measured. In the forest area, water surface elevation and bed material obtained through Manning's equation are very close to HEC-RAS model result. However, in the resident area the Manning's 'n' value calculated much higher than assumption which was considered as cobble whose 'n' value is 0.03-0.06. The difference could be caused by unusual steep elevation on the site and the dam present down further. With the steep elevation upside of dam, there is critical-depth condition occurs. The difference of Manning's 'n' value reflects the difference of depth. HEC-RAS model was run to analyze the difference and the result shows that depth is 0.36 much less than 0.688 what I computed when the Manning's n value is 0.03(cobble) instead of the result of the study (0.13292). Beside, dam is a major source of fragmentation and degradation of stream, and it's possibly inferred upstream water levels are increased and stream velocity is decreased. This study is meaningful for introduction of HEC-RAS in geography field to analyze different sites with channel bed material, and it is going to be used more actively to manage river and river side.
The performance of screw air compressor is affected by rotor profile, lobe number, air end wrap angle, rotor L/D ratio, suction and discharge ports, revolutions of air end and load regulation control, etc. In general, an efficient screw compressor needs a rotor profile of which has a large flow cross-section area, short sealing lines and a small blow-hole. In this study, experimental study was performed with newly designed $5{\times}6$ rotor profile and various shapes of air end. Results show that the measured specific power consumption of the newly designed screw compressor appeared to be lower than any other published data for the equivalent screw compressors manufactured.

Deafs train articulation by observing mouth of a tutor, sensing tactually the motions of the vocal organs, or using speech training aids. Present speech training aids for deafs can measure only single speech parameter, or display only frequency spectra in histogram of pseudo-color. In this study, a speech training aids that can display subject's articulation in the form of a cross section of the vocal organs and other speech parameters together in a single system is to be developed and this system makes a subject know where to correct. For our objective, first, speech production mechanism is assumed to be AR model in order to estimate articulatory motions of the vocal organs from speech signal. Next, a vocal tract profile model using LP analysis is made up. And using this model, articulatory motions for Korean vowels are estimated and displayed in the vocal tract profile graphics.
