Research and innovation are widely agreed to be major driving forces behind long-term productivity and economic growth. However, the relationships have proven to be difficult to quantify. We make reference to the international literature and draw on recent research for Australia to advance our understanding of these relationships. Particular focus is on assessing the impact of publically financed R&D on productivity. The conclusions have implications for government innovation policies, providing insight into possible productivity gains from funding reallocations. Specifically, the findings suggest that government research agencies and higher education are areas in which investment leads to more potential productivity gains.

This paper empirically estimates gains from capital inflow to a regional ecomomy. It will be a usefulc for indicator for a local government to build a policy for attracting capital. We estimate the respective Cobb-Douglas production function for 11 provinces of Korea, derive its marginal productivity of capital, and then calculate the amount of capital moved between two provinces and gains from the capital movement. With no barriers to capital movement, there would be a strong motive for capital inflow to Seoul, Pusan, and Kyungki, whereas capital outflow would be expected in Chonnam, Chungbuk, Chungnam, and Kyungbuk. The ratio of gains from capital movement to the regional domestic from capital movement to the regional domestic product(RDP) is high in Cheju, Kangwon, Chungbuk, and so on. It turns out that capital flows from an area with lower productivity of capital to one with hihger productivity. This implies that if the local government of an underdeveloped region wants to lure capital investment from outside, it needs to provide it with strong incentives of eax reduction and special loans.
Purpose - This research aims to provide empirical evidence that highlights the importance of imported intermediate goods in long-term economic growth. To this end, this paper develops an index that measures the productivity gains associated with a country's intermediate goods imports using highly disaggregated trade data. Design/methodology - The basic hypothesis is that countries sourcing higher-productivity (or higher-quality) inputs from developed economies derive a larger benefit from foreign R&D. To explore this hypothesis, standard cross-country growth regressions are performed using the highly disaggregated data from the United Nations (UN) Commodity Trade Statistics Database (COMTRADE). To address the endogeneity issue, I apply an instrumental variable (IV) approach. Findings - The results of this study demonstrate that the index predicts subsequent economic growth in middle- and low-income countries. This finding is consistent with previous studies that have argued that developing countries can achieve substantial productivity gains by importing intermediate inputs from developed countries. By contrast, there is no evidence of a significant association between the index and economic growth in high-income countries. Originality/value - This paper contributes to our understanding of the causal relationship between international trade and economic growth. From an economic policy perspective, the results suggest that developing countries with limited technology endowment can boost growth from input-tariff liberalization.
Purpose - This study examined the effect of tariff cuts on productivity in Korea's manufacturing industries and the effect of initial productivity level before tariff cuts on productivity improvement after tariff cuts. We also attempted to identify whether import-driven or export-driven factors are more important for productivity improvement, especially in low productivity industries. Design/methodology - Since tariff reduction is a policy decision that can affect cross-industry, its impact is spread across all industries beyond the scope of a single firm through the input and output network of industry structure. Accordingly, we proposed a new method to measure the change in productivity to reflect the impact of tariff cuts across industries. Through an Armington CGE analysis, changes in endogenous variables can be directly measured after the exogenous shock of tariff reduction, and the amount of movements in productivity triggered by tariff cuts can also be calculated. We can thus assess the effectiveness of exogenous policy, such as tariff cuts, through the difference between the benchmark and counterfactual values of endogenous variables. Findings - This study confirmed that tariff reduction positively affected productivity improvement in Korea's manufacturing industries. It also confirmed that productivity gains occur in Korea's leading export industries. Finally, greater productivity gains were recorded in the group with additional high-export-share or high-import-share conditions for low productivity industries. These results are, in a limited sense, consistent with the existing studies that emphasize the importance of exports and imports on productivity improvement, especially for low productivity industries. Originality/value - The results of our experiments are different from those of non-CGE studies, which measure the industry-level change in productivity with dummy coefficients, in terms of directly calculating the amount of change in productivity. In addition, we propose that the Armington CGE model is more appropriate than the Melitz CGE model to directly measure the productivity after tariff cuts. This is because the Melitz CGE model assumes the given specific productivity density, which does not change after an overall drop of tariffs. To the best of our knowledge, this approach to directly calculating productivity by reflecting the impact of tariff reduction across industries through CGE analysis, is unprecedented in this literature.

This paper investigates how the factor inputs of firms are affected by the expectation about land-price increase in the future. We develope a two-factor (land and labor) model, in which expectation about land-price increase plays a key role in determining the "optimal" input level of labor and land. Expecting capital gains from input of the land when land price increases, firms input land up to the point where the marginal productivity of land falls short of the marginal cost of purchasing the land, in order to maximize the "joint-profit". That is, firms have an incentive to use more land than they do when capital gains are not expected. We mean joint-profit by profit in the standard sense plus capital gains. Once the land is input "excessively", the productivity of labor increase and labor is also input more, since land and labor are assumed as complementary in production. This mechanism works in the opposite direction when land price decrease. This paper suggests that land price fluctuation is a major destabilizer of an economy.or destabilizer of an economy.
Computer-Aided Software Engineering or CASE is the technology for automating the software development and maintenance process. Many firms are turning to CASE in hopes of realizing improvement in productivity and system quality. Although expenditures on CASE were reported to be rapidly rising, the performance gains have been very difficult to measure. The empirical results in this article are intended to provide some evidence about (1) the major objective of using CASE, (2) the gains from CASE, (3) the difference in productivity among CASE tools. They are based on an analysis of data collected from 61 software engineers from five corporations who have the experience of using CASE.
This paper tests the economic effects of employee participation programs. We suggest framework that emphasizes the mutual gains through the interaction of employee participation programs with complementary practices-employment security, training, rational wage systems, information sharing and empowerment-. In regression analysis, we find positive effects on the productivity. And also we test significant differences of participation level and complementary level between win-win group(high productivity and low turnover) and lose-lose group(low productivity and high turnover) through the t-test and discriminant analysis. This facts suggest that employee participation programs contribute to mutual gains.
This study aims to identify the causal relationship among public technology transfer, technological performance, and research and development (R&D) productivity. Using the impulse-response function(IRF) of a panel vector autoregressive model (panel VAR), this study suggests the results of how long the factors such as technological performance (patent), public technology transfer, and R&D productivity takes and lasts if a one-unit shock of standard deviation occurs. As a result, first, the increase of public technology transfer activities has no power to increase the technology performance but improve the R&D productivity. If the public institute increases its technology transfer activities by one unit, the R&D productivity will increase within five years. Second, the impact of increasing technological performance on improvement of public technology transfer and R&D productivity is an insignificant. Third, the effect of R&D productivity on the public technology transfer creates a substantial reaction after a current time. Considering the structural relationships among public technology transfer, technological performance, and R&D productivity, if policy makers intend to construct the active R&D circumstance, technology suppliers should be motivated to run the active R&D mechanism because they achieve gains.
The rapid adoption of smartphones and tablets among employees has recently forced organizations to proactively embrace bring your own device (BYOD). The situation of COVID-19 makes the concept of BYOD even paramount. Allowing employees to bring their own mobile devices to the workplace has helped companies realize productivity gains and cost benefits. However, BYOD has also blurred the boundaries between work and personal life, thereby creating a stressful environment for employees (Doargajudbur and Hosanoo, 2023). This study explores the relationships between several BYOD attributes and investigates the effects of these attributes on work-to-life conflict. It contributes by introducing workplace connectivity after hours as a new dimension of BYOD attribute to influence work-to-life conflict. Based on boundary theory, a theoretical model is developed and tested with an online survey. The results reveal that flexibility and workplace connectivity after hours positively influence productivity, and flexibility helps to relieve instead of increase work overload. Meanwhile, a higher level of flexibility and productivity can help reduce work-to-life conflict, and a higher level of work overload induces a higher level of work-to-life conflict.

The objective of this study is to select reward measure of improved business results. Grain sharing is defined as a compensation system that is designed to provide for variable compensation and to support an employee involvement process by rewarding the members of a group or organization for improvements in organizational performance. Gains, as measured by a predetermined formula, are shared with all eligible employees, typically through the payment of cash bonuses. Generally sales, profit, value-added, cost reduction portion and otherthings have been used as gains, otherwise improved business results, without any proof which is correlated to productivity improvement. This paper suggests which business result is fit reward measure for each business types and sizes.
