  • Recently, an integrated electronic publishing format that can be used by disabled people and the general public is expected. If applied to national alternative material production strategy, it is expected that not only the problem of alternative material production strategy using existing DTD(Document Type Definition) but also various alternative material corresponding to the demand of consumer can be supplied. In order to cope with changes in the production and management strategy of the substitute materials for the rapidly changing persons with disabilities, it is necessary to develop the substitute materials related to the substitute materials, such as 'production of alternative materials', 'research and education of alternative material', and 'operation of alternative material network' The organization of the National Library for the Disabled should be expanded and reorganized so that a constructed center can be established and demonstrated its expertise.

  • Alternative materials for the visually disabled are very important factors for accessing and using information, dissolving the knowledge information gap, social participation and integration. Nevertheless, since alternative materials have been produced, until recently, even under the voluntary efforts of the braille library and the financial support of local governments, the scope of the materials is restricted to literary materials and hobby books, duplicated in title, and limited in format. In this study, we investigated and analyzed the cases of domestic and international library and related organizations' alternative material production and the current state and perception of alternative materials by applying the survey method to special libraries for the visually disabled and the visually disabled. Based on these results, we added suggestions for the improvement for alternative material production and utilization.

Abatement of Methane Production from Ruminants: Trends in the Manipulation of Rumen Fermentation

  • Methane emitted from ruminant livestock is regarded as a loss of feed energy and also a contributor to global warming. Methane is synthesized in the rumen as one of the hydrogen sink products that are unavoidable for efficient succession of anaerobic microbial fermentation. Various attempts have been made to reduce methane emission, mainly through rumen microbial manipulation, by the use of agents including chemicals, antibiotics and natural products such as oils, fatty acids and plant extracts. A newer approach is the development of vaccines against methanogenic bacteria. While ionophore antibiotics have been widely used due to their efficacy and affordable prices, the use of alternative natural materials is becoming more attractive due to health concerns regarding antibiotics. An important feature of a natural material that constitutes a possible alternative methane inhibitor is that the material does not reduce feed intake or digestibility but does enhance propionate that is the major hydrogen sink alternative to methane. Some implications of these approaches, as well as an introduction to antibiotic-alternative natural materials and novel approaches, are provided.

Development of Renewable Energy Source in Mongolia: Biodiesel (몽골지역의 신재생에너지 발굴: 바이오디젤)

  • Recently, the development of renewable energy sources in Mongolia has been needed due to climate change and air pollution in Ulaanbaatar as rapid economic growth. Biodiesel can be considered as an alternative fuel for petroleum based diesel in order to decrease air pollution in Ulaanbaatar because of its no emission of particle materials from internal combustion engine in automobile. Rapeseed oil having low cloud point and pour point was suggested as a promising raw material for biodiesel production in Mongolia. Considering high population density and severe air pollution by particle materials and SOx in Ulaanbaatar, prior supplying site of biodiesel in Mongolia was the capital region including Ulaanbaatar. In the production of biodiesel in Mongolia, adsorption process was a effective alternative to washing process for the removal of residual alkali catalyst and reactants due to long winter time in Mongolia. For the stable supply of biodiesel, subsidy and no tax policy is needed in the early stage of biodiesel supply in Mongolia.

An Analysis of Alternative Materials Collection Evaluation Using a National Alternative Materials Union Catalog (국가대체자료종합목록을 이용한 시각장애인 대체자료 장서 평가 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to diagnose the current status of alternative materials in Korea and to suggest directions and goals for the development of alternative materials. The comprehensive list of national alternative materials and the list of popular and new books were analyzed using the collection evaluation method. Results first the percentage of alternative material collections based on the popular book list for 10 years is 90.1%. The production rate of alternative materials is low in the subjects of 'Language', 'Art' and 'Technology and Science'. Most of the service formats were 'text only daisy'. Second, the CCHR(Common Collection Holding Ratio) and CUI(Collection Uniqueness index) of alternative materials were analyzed using the union catalog. Libraries with a large volume of books have a high proportion of CCHR and CUI. Topics with the highest CCHR are 'Literature' and 'Social Science'. The subjects with the highest collection uniqueness index are 'religion', 'art', and 'language'. Third, the replacement ratio of new books for 3 years is 5.09%. During the same period, the average book purchase rate of public libraries was 8.83%. The average book purchase rate in public libraries is 8.83%, and it is necessary to increase the collection rate of alternative materials based on this ratio.

Efficient and Cost-Reduced Glucoamylase Fed-Batch Production with Alternative Carbon Sources

  • Glucoamylase is an important industrial enzyme. Glucoamylase production by industrial Aspergillus niger strain featured with two major problems: (i) empirical substrate feeding methods deteriorating the fermentation performance; and (ii) the high raw materials cost limiting the economics of the glucoamylase product with delegated specification. In this study, we first proposed a novel three-stage varied-rate substrate feeding strategy for efficient glucoamylase production in a 5 L bioreactor using the standard feeding medium, by comparing the changing patterns of the important physiological parameters such as DO, OUR, RQ, etc., when using different substrate feeding strategies. With this strategy, the glucoamylase activity and productivity reached higher levels of 11,000 U/ml and 84.6 U/ml/h, respectively. The performance enhancement in this case was beneficial from the following results: DO and OUR could be controlled at the higher levels (30%, 43.83 mmol/l/h), while RQ was maintained at a stable/lower level of 0.60 simultaneously throughout the fed-batch phase. Based on this three-stage varied-rate substrate feeding strategy, we further evaluated the economics of using alternative carbon sources, attempting to reduce the raw materials cost. The results revealed that cornstarch hydrolysate could be considered as the best carbon source to replace the standard and expensive feeding medium. In this case, the production cost of the glucoamylase with delegated specification (5,000 U/ml) could be saved by more than 61% while the product quality be ensured simultaneously. The proposed strategy showed application potential in improving the economics of industrial glucoamylase production.

Screening of 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) producing bacteria using mulberry leaf

  • 1-Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) has been extensively investigated for its applications as an a-glucosidase inhibitor in postprandial hyperglycemia, and has been applied to nutraceuticals and medicines to prevent or delay the progression of type 2 diabetes. However, the amount of DNJ in mulberry leaves is low (approximately 0.1%), therefore, a more effective extraction method is needed. In this study, microbial DNJ production was developed as an alternative to chemical methods. We identified fermented sericultural products and bacteria that produce DNJ in large quantities using high performance liquid chromatography and thin layer chromatography. The inhibition of a-glucosidase activity was examined with respect to DNJ production or non-production. Crude DNJ from the isolated strains exhibited greater than 70% a-glucosidase activity. An investigation of the effect of mulberry leaf powder concentration (1~5%), using high DNJ producing bacteria, provided evidence for microbial mass production of DNJ.

Alternative Method of Determining Resilient Modulus of Subbase Materials Using Free-Free Resonant Column Test (현장공진주시험을 이용한 보조기층 재료의 대체 $M_R$ 시험법)

  • The stiffness of the subbase materials is represented by the resilient modulus, $M_R$, which are very important properties in the mechanistic design of flexible pavement system. However, the cyclic $M_R$ testing method is too complex, expensive, and time consuming to be applicable on a production basis. In this study, the alternative $M_R$ testing technique for subbase materials was developed using a free-free resonant column (FF-RC) test considering deformational characteristics of subbase materials. To estimate the deformational characteristics of subbase materials, effects of strain amplitude and mean effective stress on modulus of subbase materials were investigated. The $M_R$ values determined by alternative testing procedures matched well with those determined by standard $M_R$ test, showing the capability of the proposed methods being used in determining $M_R$ values.

In this study, we obtained evidence for Bacillus subtilis that produce DNJ in large quantities by high performance liquid chromatography. Inhibition of α-glucosidase activity was determined to DNJ production or non-production. Investigation of the effect of mulberry leaves powder concentration (1~5%), using the DNJ high-production bacteria, provided evidence for microbial mass production of DNJ. When the 4% mulberry leaf powder for 9 days was used, the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity was over the 85%. Also, the results presented in this study confirm DNJ yield's increasement in microbes using the various of nutrients and provide insight of ways to improve DNJ yields in microorganisms.

  • Sustainable energy consumption and increasing $CO_2$ emissions stimulate Eco-friendly industry. Wood has positive various properties as alternative energy such as solar, wind and water. Wood provide lumber, pallet, paper, pulp and fuel through production process. Even Korea republic has 63.7% of forest rates, weather condition makes low forestry production capacity. For utilization of domestic small diameter log needs study mechanical properties. In this study, various properties tested on domestic Japanese Larch small diameter lumbers and make mechanical properties table for allowable stress calculation. Result of compressive test, allowable compressive stress is 13 MPa. Allowable bending stress is 12 MPa.
