1-Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) has been extensively investigated for its applications as an a-glucosidase inhibitor in postprandial hyperglycemia, and has been applied to nutraceuticals and medicines to prevent or delay the progression of type 2 diabetes. However, the amount of DNJ in mulberry leaves is low (approximately 0.1%), therefore, a more effective extraction method is needed. In this study, microbial DNJ production was developed as an alternative to chemical methods. We identified fermented sericultural products and bacteria that produce DNJ in large quantities using high performance liquid chromatography and thin layer chromatography. The inhibition of a-glucosidase activity was examined with respect to DNJ production or non-production. Crude DNJ from the isolated strains exhibited greater than 70% a-glucosidase activity. An investigation of the effect of mulberry leaf powder concentration (1~5%), using high DNJ producing bacteria, provided evidence for microbial mass production of DNJ.
There is an increasing need for manufacturing systems to produce batches in small quantities. Such manufacturing systems are significantly difficult to develop with conventional automation equipment. Recently, several research groups have applied industrial dual-arm robots to cell production lines. A synchronization method for robots is necessary for the cell production process when robots work in a shared workspace. Conventional automation factories do not need this method because the main control system operates all of the machines or robots. However, our intended application for the developed robot is in small manufacturing environments that cannot install an expensive main control system. We propose an inexpensive and high-performance method with a simple digital in/out channel using a real-time communication protocol. The developed method was validated in a pilot production line for cellular phone packing.
Natural photosynthesis utilizes two proteins, photosystem I and photosystem II, to efficiently oxidize water and reduce NADP+ to NADPH. Artificial photosynthesis which mimics this process achieve water splitting through a two-step Z-schematic water splitting process using man-made synthetic materials for hydrogen fuel production. In this study, Z-scheme system was achieved from the hybrid materials which composed of hydrogen production part as photosystem I protein and water oxidizing part as semiconductor BiVO4. Utilizing photosystem I as the hydrogen evolving part overcomes the problems of existing hydrogen evolving p-type semiconductors such as water instability, expensive cost, few available choices and poor red light (>600 nm) absorbance. Some problems of photosystem II, oxygen evolving part of natural photosynthesis, such as demanding isolation process and D1 photo-damage can also be solved by utilizing BiVO4 as the oxygen evolving part. Preceding research has not suggested any protein-inorganic-hybrid Z-scheme composed of both materials from natural photosynthesis and artificial photosynthesis. In this study, to realize this Z-schematic electron transfer, diffusion step of electron carrier, which usually degrades natural photosynthesis efficiency, was eliminated. Instead, BiVO4 and Pt-photosystem I were all linked together by the mediator gold. Synthesized all-solid-state hybrid materials show enhanced hydrogen evolution ability directly from water when illuminated with visible light.
This study was conducted to produce effectively more leaves of Angelica acutiloba through year-round production system by using various mulching materials. Soil temperature by covering treatment was the highest in P.E.(Polyethylene Film) mulching and followed by rice straw mulching, especially showing highest temperature in Tr. PE(Transparent Polyethylene Film) from April through May. Water content of soil was higher in P.E. mulching than in non-mulching. Leaf and stem production of Angelica acutiloba through year-round production showed the highest in PE mulching also root production of Angelica acutiloba showed the highest in P.E. mulching. These results suggest that leaf and stem production of Angelica acutiloba can be maximized through P.E. mulching cultivation system.

Background: Isotopes of the projectile may be produced along the beam path during the irradiation of a target by a heavy ion due to inelastic interactions with the media. This study analyzed the production cross-section of carbon (C) and Helium (He) projectile's isotopes resulting from the interactions of these beams with different materials along the beam path. Materials and Methods: In this study, we transport C and He ion beams through different materials. This transportation was made by the Monte Carlo simulation. Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) has been used for this calculation. Results and Discussion: It has been found that 10C, 11C, and 13C from the 12C ion beam and 3He from the 4He ion beam are significant projectile's isotopes that have higher flux than other isotopes of these projectiles. The 4He ion beam has a higher projectile's isotope production cross-section along the beam path, which adds more impurities to the beam than the 12C ion beam. These projectile's isotopes from both the 12C and 4He ion beams have higher production cross-sections in hydrogenous materials like water or polyethylene. Conclusion: It is important to distinguish these projectile's isotopes from the primary beam particles to obtain a precise and accurate cross-section result by minimizing the error during measurement with a nuclear track detector. This study will show the trend of the production probability of projectile's isotopes for these ion beams.
The present paper aims to give basic information to establish zero emission material cycle including the minimization of emissions from industrial production processes and the area in regional scale. Strategies and methodologies to analyze emissions from the production processes and our human activities and to reduce those emissions by refining and/or replacing the unit process with the alternatives are introduced as well. Quantitative evaluation and management systems of any raw materials and the production process are from vie points of treatment are essential. Estabiishment of a process networking for the recycle of discharged non-products materials by the intra-process, trans-process and the trans-industries are proposed. Procedures and priorities to formulate industrial and regional zero emission system are proposed as well.
In order to expand the material recycling of waste plastics made of composite materials, it is necessary to develop the use of material recycling products and to secure their quality stability. In this paper, as a basic study to secure the stability of the quality of household waste plastic material recycling products, the quality characteristics of recycled materials according to the production period were compared and reviewed. In addition, the average tensile strength of the recycled products by production period for 4 months was 12.33 MPa, and the average density was 1.35 g/m3.

The aim of this study was to develop a potential process for bioethanol production from Hydrodictyon reticulatum (HR), a filamentous freshwater alga, using Saccharomyces cerevisiae (KCTC7017). From the sugar solutions prepared by the four different hydrolysis methods, bioethanol production ranged from 11.0 g/100 g dried material (acid hydrolysis) to 22.3 g/100 g dried material (enzymatic hydrolysis, EH). Bioethanol was fermented from a highly concentrated sugar solution obtained by a decompression-mediated (vacuum) enrichment method (VE). As the results, ethanol was more efficiently produced from HR when sugar solutions were concentrated by VE following EH (EH/VE). Using multiple feeding of the sugar solution prepared by EH/VE from HR, ethanol reached up to a concentration of 54.3 g/l, corresponding to 24.9 g/100 g dried material, which attained the economic level of product concentration (approximately 5%). The results indicate that by using HR, it is feasible to establish a bioethanol production process, which is effective for using microalgae as the raw material for ethanol production.
Monazite is a phosphate mineral that contains thorium (Th) and rare earth elements. The Th concentration in monazite can be as high as 500 ppm, and it has the potential to be used as fuel in the nuclear power system. Therefore, this study aimed to conduct the techno-economic analysis (TEA) of Th extraction in the form of thorium oxide (ThO2) from monazite. Th can be extracted from monazite through an alkaline fusion method. The TEA of ThO2 production studied parameters, including raw materials, equipment costs, total plant direct and indirect costs, and direct fixed capital cost. These parameters were calculated for the production of 0.5, 1, and 10 ton ThO2 per batch. The TEA study revealed that the highest production cost was ascribed to installed equipment. Furthermore, the highest return on investment (ROI) of 21.92% was achieved for extraction of 1 ton/batch of ThO2, with a payback time of 4.56 years. With further increase in ThO2 production to 10 ton/batch, the ROI was decreased to 5.37%. This is mainly due to a significant increase in the total capital investment with increasing ThO2 production scale. The minimum unit production cost was achieved for 1 ton ThO2/batch equal to 335.79 $/Kg ThO2.
