Nowadays, the issue of congestion control in high-speed communication networks becomes critical in view of the bandwidth-delay products for efficient data flow. In particular, the fact that the congestion is often accompanied by the data flow from the high-speed link to low-speed link is important with respect to the stability of closed-loop congestion control. The Virtual-Connection Network (VCN) in Gigabit Ethernet networks is a packet-switching based network capable of implementing cell- based connection, link-by-link flow-controlled connection, and single- or multi-destination virtual connections. VCN described herein differ from the virtual channel in ATM literature in that VCN have link-by-link flow control and can be of multi-destination. VCNs support both connection-oriented and connectionless data link layer traffic. Therefore, the worst collision scenario in Ethernet CSMA/CD with virtual collision brings about end-to-end delay. Gigabit Ethernet networks based on CSMA/CD results in non-deterministic behavior because its media access rules are based on random probability. Hence, it is difficult to obtain any sound mathematical formulation for congestion control without employing random processes or fluid-flow models. In this paper, an analytical method for the design of a congestion control scheme is proposed based on Smith's principle to overcome instability accompanied with the increase of end-to-end delays as well as to avoid cell losses. To this end, mathematical analysis is provided such that the proposed control scheme guarantees the performance improvement with respect to bandwidth and latency for selected network links with different propagation delays. In addition, guaranteed bandwidth is to be implemented by allowing individual stations to burst several frames at a time without intervening round-trip idle time.

Hardware for monitoring the water quality using water fleas is developed. Water flea is a frequently used biological sensor for monitoring the water quality. Water fleas quickly respond to the incoming toxic water by changing their activity when they are exposed. By measuring the activity of water fleas, the incoming toxic water is instantly detected. So far the measurement of activity of water fleas has been done with a system equipped with both a light source of LED and a light detector of photo transistor. Water flea itself is, however, sensitive to light resulting in incorrect response and the system has two inconvenient separate parts of the light source and the detector. This paper suggests a system using a CCD camera instead of a light source and a detector. The suggested system processes the image data from the CCD camera in real time without any delay. The developed system becomes a part of the remote water monitoring embedded system.
Acoustic based localization is essential to operate autonomous robotic systems in underwater environment where the use of sensorial data is limited. This paper proposes a localization method using artificial underwater acoustic sources. The proposed method acquires directional angles of acoustic sources using time difference of arrivals of two hydrophones. For this purpose, a probabilistic approach is used for accurate estimation of the time delay. Then, Gaussian sum filter based SLAM technique is used to localize both acoustic sources and underwater vehicle. It is performed by using bearing of acoustic sources as measurement and inertial sensors as prediction model. The proposed method can handle directional ambiguity of time difference based source localization by generating Gaussian models corresponding to possible locations of both front and back sides. Through these processes, the proposed method can provide reliable localization method for underwater vehicles without any prior information of source locations. The performance of the proposed method is verified by experimental results conducted in a real sea environment.

Semiconductor research and development(R&D) fabs are very different than production fabs in many ways such as the scales of production, job priority, production methods, and performance measures. Efficient operations of R&D fabs are very important to the development of new product, process stability, high yield, and ultimately company competitiveness. This paper proposes the fab-wide scheduling method for operational optimization of the R&D fabs. Most scheduling systems of semiconductor fabs have only focused on maximizing throughput of each separated areas without considering WIP(works in process) flows of entire fab. In this paper, we proposes the a fab-wide scheduling system which schedules all lots to entire fab equipment at once. We develop the MIP(mixed integer programing) model which allocates the lots to production equipment considering many constraints of all processes and the CP(constraint programming) model which determines the sequences of the lots in the production equipment. The proposed FAB-wide scheduling model is applied to the newly constructed R&D fab. As a result, we have accomplished the system based automated job reservation, decrease of the hot lot delay, increase of the queue time satisfaction, the high throughput by maximizing the batch sizes, decrease of the WIP TAT(Turn Around Time).

This study reveals some recent attempt in modeling empirically obtained B&K HATS (Head and Torso Simulator) HRTFs (Head Related Transfer Functions) to Isolate parameters that stimulate lateral and elevation perception. Localization using non-individual HRTFs often yields poor performance in synthesizing virtual sound sources when applied to a group of individuals due to differences in size and shape of head, pinnae, and torso. For realization of both effective and efficient virtual audio it is necessary to develop a method to tailor a given set of non-individual HRTFs to fit each listener without measuring his/her HRTF set. Pole-zero modeling is applied to fit HRIRs (Head Related Impulse Responses) and modeling criterions for determining suitable number of parameters are suggested for efficient modeling. Horizontal HRTFs are modeled as minimum-phase transfer functions with appropriate ITDs (Interaural Time Delay) obtained from RTF (Ray Tracing Formula) to better fit the size of listener's head for usage in simple virtualizer algorithms without complex regularization processes. Result of modeling HRTFs in the median plane is shown and parameters responsible for elevation perception are isolated which can be referred to in the future study of developing customizable HRTFs.

For advanced TFT-LCD manufacturing processes, dry etching of thin-film layers(a-Si, $SiN_x$, SID & gate electrodes, ITO etc.) is increasingly preferred instead of conventional wet etching processes. To dry etch Al gate electrode which is advantageous for reducing propagation delay time of scan signals, high etch rate, slope angle control, and etch uniformity are required. For the Al gate electrode, some metals such as Ti and Nd are added in Al to prevent hillocks during post-annealing processes in addition to gaining low-resistivity($<10u{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$), high performance to heat tolerance and corrosion tolerance of Al thin films. In the case of AI-Nd alloy films, however, low etch rate and poor selectivity over photoresist are remained as a problem. In this study, to enhance the etch rates together with etch uniformity of AI-Nd alloys, magnetized inductively coupled plasma(MICP) have been used instead of conventional ICP and the effects of various magnets and processes conditions have been studied. MICP was consisted of fourteen pairs of permanent magnets arranged along the inside of chamber wall and also a Helmholtz type axial electromagnets was located outside the chamber. Gas combinations of $Cl_2,{\;}BCl_3$, and HBr were used with pressures between 5mTorr and 30mTorr, rf-bias voltages from -50Vto -200V, and inductive powers from 400W to 800W. In the case of $Cl_2/BCl_3$ plasma chemistry, the etch rate of AI-Nd films and etch selectivity over photoresist increased with $BCl_3$ rich etch chemistries for both with and without the magnets. The highest etch rate of $1,000{\AA}/min$, however, could be obtained with the magnets(both the multi-dipole magnets and the electromagnets). Under an optimized electromagnetic strength, etch uniformity of less than 5% also could be obtained under the above conditions.
A new compressed image format is proposed to use a large size of image in mobile games without the constraints of hardware specifications such as memory amount, processing power, which encodes each block of a large size image in scan line order. Using the experiments, we show the effectiveness of proposed method compared with a general PNG in terms of compression ratios and required memory in decoding processes. Also, the loading delay can be reduced by decoding only the displaying area of a large image in run-time.
In the shipbuilding industry, since production processes are so complicated that the data collection for decision making cannot be fully automated, most of production planning and controls are based on the information provided only by field workers. Therefore, without sufficient information it is very difficult to manage the whole production process efficiently. Job status is one of the most important information used for evaluating the remaining processing time in production control, specifically, in block assembly shop. Currently, it is checked by a production manager manually and production planning is modified based on that information, which might cause a delay in production control, resulting in performance degradation. Motivated by these remarks, in this paper we propose an efficient algorithm for identifying job status in block assembly shop for shipbuilding. The algorithm is based on the multi-layer perceptron neural network model using two key factors for input parameters. We showed the superiority of the algorithm by using a numerical experiment, based on real data collected from block assembly shop.
Hexavalent chromium passivation, as very effective anti-corrosion method, can not be used in the field of surface treatment for metal, any more. Throughout the world, this regulations which was applied to automotive industries will be extended to all industries including electronics industries in the near future. Therefore a new anti-corrosion method should be established without delay, and trivalent chromium passivation as an alternatives replace the hexavalent chromium passivation for the time being. This paper gives an overview of the currently available trivalent chromium passivation processes, and then it attempts to give an insight to develop a more effective trivalent chromium conversion coating process for possible substitution of the hexavalent chromium passivation process.
In distributed virtual environment, system response time to users' interactions is an importance factor to determine the degree of contentment with the system. Generally, response time is affected by the efficiency of event message processing algorithm, and most of previous systems use FCFS algorithm, which processes message traffic sequentially based only on the event occurrence time. Since this method totally depends on the order of occurrence without considering the priorities of events, it has a problem that might drop the degree of system response time by causing to delay processing message traffic when a bottleneck phenomenon happens in the server side. To overcome this limitation of FCFS algorithm, this paper proposes a concurrent event scheduling algorithm, which is able to process event messages concurrently by assigning the priorities to the events. It is also able to satisfy the two goals of system together, consistency and responsiveness through the combination of occurrence time with priority concept of events.
