  • With the recent changes in the environment of weapon systems acquisition, the systems development is becoming more susceptible to a variety of risks. To cope with this situation, US DoD has been emphasizing the importance of constantly applying the test and evaluation (T&E) process throughout the whole life cycle of the weapon systems. In particular, the safety requirements are called for attention while dealing with system risks. To this end, the present paper is aimed at studying the T&E process which incorporates the systems safety in weapon systems development. Analyzing and modeling the relevant processes has made it possible to achieve the objective. As a case study, the model results were applied to the development of unmanned aerial vehicles.

  • The development process of domestic CG (Computer Graphics) needs to be studied by classifying the technical part and the design part. This paper analyzes how early domestic broadcast equipment evolved and focused on what went through the development process. Domestic broadcasting companies have introduced and used overseas equipment and have begun to develop their own technology. The development process of the early domestic production technology of broadcasting stations was classified into Character Generator, On-line Real-Time Graphic and Sport Coder. It was found that the orientation of broadcasting technology was conclusively focused on visualization, with socio-cultural factors acting along with the evolution of hardware and software. This research is meaningful in reorganizing the history of the development process of domestic CG technology in the early days through previous research (primary verification), newspaper articles and news coverage (secondary verification). This paper looks at what is missing by regaining the past of CG, and argues that with the advent of new technologies today, we must develop through appropriate division of roles and collaboration between engineers and designers.

  • Software development undergoes a number of iterations and each iteration forms its own cycle going through requirement analysis, scheme and design, implementation and finally test and evaluation. In this iterated development process, executable releases are produced, improved and eventually developed to a complete system, going through this particular development cycle. Compared to the conventional process, the advantage of rapid iterative development process lies in reducing risk factors in early stage and responding to changes very flexibly. In addition, highly reusable, the process can improve capabilities of the development team while the project is being carried out. As a result, overall balance in quality is secured. The objective of this paper is the research of rapid development process and its case studies showing how to adapt the rapidly changing customer requirements and to transform those requirements into the project timely and adequately. The proposed process is focused on the common and core activities of NET-based MarMIIII, MSF/CD, XP, Agile, PSP and TSP

  • Modern weapon systems are getting more complex in terms of the functionality and also the conditions on the environment and range in which they are deployed and used. Therefore, many development programs can easily be exposed to a variety of risks, resulting in delayed schedules and cost overrun. As such, effective means are necessary to keep the defence budget at an affordable level while competitive edges on technological aspects are retained. As one way to meet those need, modeling and simulation (M&S) methods have widely been used, particularly in the test and evaluation (T&E) process for weapon systems development. The result of M&S-based systems development should be evaluated by the verification, validation & accreditation (VV&A) process to assure keeping reliability at a desired level. On the other hand, due to the explosiveness, the weapons systems development naturally requires to consider safety issues in both the T&E and operational periods. The purpose of this paper is to improve the VV&A process by reflecting the safety requirements therein. To do so, the VV&A process has been analyzed and graphically modeled first and then safety elements have been incorporated effectively. The use of the improved process in the war ships development has also been discussed. Based on the process proposed and the consequent database constructed, the target system can be expected to benefit from reducing development risks while assuring systems safety.

  • ElectroSlag Strip Overlaying (ESSO) process has been around since 1970. ESSO process had limited acceptance due to a few problems associated with the use of this process in its very early stage. Limited knowledge and, most significantly, poor quality of the equipment and welding flux gave the ESSO process a bad name. However, this process is well accepted today and used in North America, Europe and Japan. The ESSO process provides low dilution overlays at high deposition rates, excellent and consistent deposit chemistry with excellent surface quality, and virtually no defects. Capitan has taken this process one step further through extensive research and development of the process itself as well as the equipment. The improvement brought to the process warranted the issuance in May 2000 of an US patent. This study demonstrates the feasibility of this process with immediate positive production results. The main achievements of this work are as follows: $\textbullet$ Development of six various strip-flux combinations on three different base materials: carbon steel, $\frac{1}{4}$ Cr/.5 Mo and 2 $\frac{1}{4}$ Cr/l Mo, fully tested with: penetrant, ultrasound, bends, hardness, overlay chemistry, corrosion and hydrogen disbonding. $\textbullet$ 12" dia. 90 hot formed elbows from straight pipe electroslag overlayed with "1 layer" and "2 layer" Alloy 625 $\textbullet$ a very unique development of miniaturized overlaying equipment able to perform overlay in pipe with diameters as low as 10" (254 mm). This development has large applications in the field of offshore, petrochemical, refining, pulp and paper and power generation industries. The aftermath of this development was its immediate acceptance by major end users with the completion of four projects of overlayed pipe in the USA and Far East Asia.

  • We suggest a process for the basic software configurations and application development in the mode management design of AUTOSAR-based ECU. Mode management is an essential task and AUTOSAR provides the mode management components for the runtime state handling of an ECU, such as BswM, application mode manager and RTE. BswM is used to meet the custom's requirements for ECU state handling. The behavior of BswM is configured with a set of rules in the form of "if-else" statements, so it is a complicated job and a potential source of errors as the number of rules increases. These difficulties can be overcome using the Model-Based Development approach, which is widely used in the AUTOSAR SW development. An efficient process is proposed to apply the MBD approach to the BswM configuration. An application mode development process is also proposed to improve the mode management design by combining the MBD process. Development tools are developed to adapt these proposed processes to the traditional ones. Simulation and experimental results are provided to prove the feasibility of the proposed approach.

  • As the cumulative amount of spent fuel increases, the reliable and effective management of the spent fuel has become a world-wide mission. For this mission, KAERI is developing the Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process (ACP) as a pre-disposal treatment process for spent fuel. Conventional approach to the development of the process and the remote operation technology is to fabricate the process equipment on the same scale as the real environment and demonstrate the remote handling operation using simulated fuel called a mock-up test. But this mock-up test is expensive and time consuming, since the design may need to be modified and the equipment fabricated again to account for the problems found during a testing. To deal with this problem, we developed a digital mockup for the ACP. Also, for an effective utilization of the digital mockup, we developed user interface modules such as the data acquisition and display module and the external input device interface module. The result of this implementation shows that a continuous motion of the manipulator using the external device interface can be represented easily and the information display screens responded well to the simulation situation.

  • Current production systems have been recognized as having contributed a dramatic growth in the Korean film industry. However, industry voices feel that the role of these production systems should be reorganized as the industry faces further needs for development process. Film development process involves item selection, scenario completion process, and packaging process, which include choosing the right director and actors in order to increase the chances of completion of the film as well as increasing probability of investment funds. Thus, film development is a very creative and practical businesslike activity at the same time. The purpose of this report is to study the producers' role and problems by comparing Korean film development processes to 'Produced By' of the PGA(Producers Guild of America) and suggest a solution for the improvement.
