  • The purpose of this paper is to apply the newly developed SICAT teaching and learning model to the actual scene of teaching and learning and draw a point of discussion for utilizing teaching and learning model, by uncovering the satisfaction of students and the inhibiting/facilitating elements when using the model. SICAT(Scientific Inquiry and Creative Activity with Technology; from here on SICAT), a teaching and learning model custom-built for engineering education, was developed, as more and more people paid attention to the demand for creative engineers. It was developed from the basis of PBL(Problem Based Learning), includes three sub-types which can be applied to the actual theory, design, and experimentation fields within engineering education. The three sub-types, which are ARDA(Analysis-Reasoning Activity & Discussion-Argumentation Activity), CoCD (Collaboration Activity & Capstone Design Activity), and ReSh(Reflection Activity & Sharing Activity), respectively support deductive and argumentation activities, creative design and collaboration activities, and retrospection and sharing activities. However, no research has been conducted to investigate whether or not there are inhibiting or facilitating elements in the application procedure, or what the rate of satisfaction for students is, when applying the SICAT model, which was newly developed to innovate existing engineering education, to the actual site of teaching and learning. Therefore, this research applied three types of SICAT teaching and learning models to the theory, design, and experimentation classes at the department of materials science and engineering at Hanyang University for eight weeks. After application, the students, teachers and tutors were surveyed and interviewed, and then the results analyzed in order to uncover inhibiting/facilitating elements and the rate of satisfaction. The satisfaction rate of students from the SICAT teaching and learning model was 3.78(in a perfect score of 5: The A type-3.65, The C type-3.80, The R type-3.90), and inhibiting/facilitating elements were drawn from the aspects of learning activities, support system. In conclusion, they can be contributed for implications of SICAT teaching and learning model universal use at engineering education in University.

  • Most of business enterprises today struggle with the coordination of work which is one of the most challenging problems in the business environment. And the situation becomes worse by the increasing complexity and uncertainty. In this paper, suitability of workflow technology for the modelling, optimization, and automation in the complex business structures is discussed. Also, in the abscence of a fully fledged method for analysis and design of workflow systems, this paper proposes a method, ETM(Extended Trigger Modelling), which can solve several problems in other methods. The proposed ETM approach consists of three stages such as situation analysis stage, activity coordination stage and implementation preparation stage. A modelling case of the proposed procedure is also presented.

  • Cell-free expression is a powerful tool for rapid protein analysis, enabling an efficient identification of gene without cumbersome procedure of transformation and cell culture. Epoxide hydrolase (EH) gene of Rhodotorula glutinis was simply amplified by PCR, and the resultant gene was expressed in vitro using a coupled Transcription/translation system. The cell-free expressed EH protein mixture exhibited the enantioselective hydrolysis activity toward (R)-styrene oxide, representing that cell-free protein synthesis system can be used for the rapid expression of an enantioselective enzyme for an efficient identification of the chiral activity.

  • Purification of polyphenol oxidase(PPO) from Korean native tobacco variety leaves was carried out through the procedure of acetone preciptation, ammonium sulfate fractionation, and Sephadex G-150 gel filtration, resulting in a 84-fold increase in specific activity. The enzyme was stable in a range of pH 7.5 to 8.0 with an optimum of pH 7.5. The optimum temperature for the enzymic reaction was about $60^{\circ}$. It was thermostable with a half-life equal to 20 min at $70^{\circ}$. Km values for (+)-catechin and pyrogallol were $1.6{\times}10^{-3}$ and $0.5{\times}10^{-3}M$, respectively. It possesses high catecholase activity but little or no cresolase activity. Lineweaver-Burk analysis of inhibition data revealed that the inhibition of (+)-catechin oxidation by potassium cyanide, 4-nitrocatechol, cystein and 2-mercaptoethanol was competitive with Ki values of $1.1{\times}10^{-6}$, $1.8{\times}10^{-6}$, $8.9{\times}10^{-6}$ and $1.3{\times}10^{-5}$, respectively.

  • Recently, 8 kb/s CS-ACELP coder of G.729 is atandardized by ITU-T SG15 and it has been reported that the speech quality of G729 is better than or equal to that of 32kb/s ADPCM. However G.729 is the fixed rate speech coder, and it does not consider the property of voice activity in mutual conversation. If we use the voice activity, we can reduce the average bit rate in half without any degradations of the speech quality. In this paper, we propose an efficient variable rate algorithm for G.729. The variable rate algorithm consists of two main subjects, the rate determination algorithm and algorithm, we combine the energy-thresholding method, the phonetic segmentation method by integration of various feature parameters obtained through the analysis procedure, and the variable hangover period method. Through the analysis of noise features, the 1 kb/s sub rate coder is designed for coding the background noise signal. So, we design the 4 kb/s sub rate coder for the unvoiced parts. The performance of the variable rate algorithm is evaluated by the comparison of speed quality and average bit rate with G.729. Subjective quality test is also done by MOS test. Conclusively, it is verified that the proposed variable rate CS-ACELP coder produced the same speech quality as G.729, at the average bit rate of 4.4 kb/s.
