  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the instructional effects of a problem solving model on students' achievement, science process skills, and perceptions of science activities. The problem solving model was developed on the basis of the SSCS (Search, Solve, Create, Share) problem solving model while considering Korean educational situations under a national curriculum. The model developed is composed of 4 stages; identify, solve, create, and share. In this research, the treatment and control groups (6 classes) were selected from a middle school in Seoul and taught about the separation of mixture for four weeks. Prior to instruction, the Group Assessment of Logical Thinking and the Learning Approach Questionnaire were administered, and their scores were used as covariate and blocking variable, respectively. During instruction, classroom observations for each group were conducted with a researcher-made checklist. Immediately following the instructions, students' achievement, science process skills, and perceptions of science activities were measured by a researcher-made achievement test, the Middle Grades Integrated Science Process Skills Test(MIPT), and the Perceptions of Science Activities Questionnaire, respectively. The results indicated that students in the treatment group achieved significantly better than those in the control group. Although students in the treatment group were found to use more science process skills correctly during their science activities, the MIPT scores of the treatment group were not significantly higher than those of the control group. No interaction with students' learning approach was found for both students' achievement and science process skills. On the questionnaire of students' perceptions of science activities, the treatment group showed more positive perceptions and interest than the control group. Educational implications are discussed.

  • National Competency Standards are the major administrative project to build a competence-based society. The manpower for the global society should be recognized by performance rather than educational records. Therefore, all colleges should first nurture NCS-type manpower based on field needs. This study comparatively analyzed the differences between the lecture style of four-year colleges and the outcomes of problem-solving and project-based learning method to prove why it is necessary to introduce the NCS program. Especially, It will review the constraints and measures of NCS introduction to overcome in a four-year university. Through this, it can be used as a means to help improve the field conformity of a four-year college curriculum by presenting the development and utilization of curriculum-based NCS in a four-year university. As a result, it was found that the overall satisfaction with the problem-solving and project-based learning method was above average. Many students were dissatisfied with the traditional teaching methods and the new project-based learning method was relatively effective in college education. Students' participation also improved. Based on the evaluation of learning performance, the new method was found more satisfactory than the old teaching method in terms of comprehension of professional knowledge in various fields, nurturing of logical thinking skills, acquisition of analytical skills, comprehensive thinking skills, creative problem recognition, and open-minded thinking skills.

  • Studies showed that elementary school students had difficulties in the idea generation for creative problem solving, and they were also not to go through with the verification process for selecting idea. Thus, it may be more effective to provide an actualized idea generation and verification methods. In this study, we developed the creativity problem solving program with the attribute listing and PMI skills in the idea generation and verification stages respectively and applied it to six groups consisting of 5th elementary school students. We analyzed the creativity and the verbal interactions among the students at the level of interaction units. The analyses of the results revealed that the problem solving program with the creative thinking skills had significant effects on the fluency and originality that were sub-elements consisting creativity. In the analyses of interaction unit, the frequencies of the 'making suggestion' at the idea generation stage were high. And at the idea verification stage, the frequencies of the 'making suggestion' and 'receiving opinion' were high. Educational implications of these findings were discussed.

  • Background : There have been many studies and efforts about quality management in health services, but these were not focused on the thinking ability of the personnel. In this study, We planned to define the relationship between Quality Management(QM) and thinking skill, and analyzed critical thinking skill and problem solving ability of the nurses for QM in healthcare. Methods : We surveyed 260 nurses in 3 hospitals by using questionnaires about thinking skills and QM from November 18 to 28, 1998. The response rate was 76.9%. We described and analyzed the data by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and non-parametric Friedman test using SPSS Win 7.5. Results : This study revealed that 1) understanding level of QM concepts was very low and insufficient, 2) willingness to practice QM in healthcare was relatively high and affirmative, but the positive attitude taking part in the program of QM is very low(4.5%), 3) even though the necessity of QM was recognized, actual application of critical thinking skills and problem solving abilities is lacking, 4) the production of idea for QM was the most insufficient, and so the next of the problem solving process(QA cycle) was the same. Conclusion : Based on the above results, we can conclude that understanding the concepts of QM is very important to solve problems about QM in healthcare. For development of thinking skill to promote critical problem solving ability for QM in healthcare, it is necessary to improve curriculum of nursing education and teaching-learning methods of QM strategy and technique.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate whether students' creative problem-solving skills improve through project-based courses. Rather than measuring overall competencies, the focus was specifically on measuring the improvement of problem-solving skills. The study involved a literature review, the design of project-based courses, and the assessment and analysis of students' competencies before and after the courses. The results of the study are as follows: Firstly, the measurement of students' creative problem-solving skills before and after the project-based courses indicated an overall improvement in the five dimensions of problem identification, analytical thinking, flexible thinking, alternative generation, and a proactive attitude. Secondly, significant correlations were found among these five dimensions, particularly strong correlations were observed between problem identification and alternative generation, problem identification and analytical thinking, and analytical thinking and alternative generation. To generalize the findings of this study, further research is needed to apply similar approaches in different types of courses and across various universities and departments.
