This study is a one-group pretest-posttest design to evaluate the effect of problem-based learning (PBL) for patient safety on self-leadership, patient safety competencies, and reflective thinking of nursing students. The research was conducted from March 2 to April 15, 2022, in which 57 nursing students participated. PBL for patient safety was examined in a total of 8 sessions in the order of motivation, problem identification, task performance planning, problem-solving methods, summary and solution, presentation, and evaluation. The following topics of patient safety were selected for each team: nursing records, high-alert medication, medication error and intravenous fluid regulation, blood transfusion care, fall, bedsore, infection control, and pain management. We provided feedback on the learning process and outcomes of nursing students. According to the results, self-leadership showed a statistically significant improvement in self-expectations (t=2.60, p=0.01), goal setting (t=2.84, p<0.01), self-reward (t=3.32, p<0.01), and self-criticism (t=2.32, p=0.02). Patient safety competencies showed a statistically significant improvement in patient safety knowledge (t=13.05, p<0.001) and patient safety skills (t=4.87, p<0.001) but not in reflective thinking. The results prove that PBL for patient safety is an effective teaching-learning strategy to improve self-leadership and patient safety competencies. Future studies must develop and validate specific and long-term teaching-learning methods to improve reflective thinking.

This qualitative study aimed to investigate ways to improve effective cooperative learning from students' perspective by understanding and analyzing the learning experiences of nursing students who participated in a collaborative problem-solving learning model. Data were collected through focus group interviews and reflection journals of six second-year nursing students from G-university in J-city who participated in a collaborative problem-solving learning model course. The interview data were analyzed and divided into 3 categories and 10 subcategories according to the six-step thematic analysis method proposed by Braun and Clarke. The results of analyzing the interviews were considered based on three areas: preparation before learning, the process of collaborating as a cooperative learning experience, and solutions and expectations after learning. The participants felt frustrated because collaborative problem-solving took more time for individual learning than traditional methods did and would not allow them to check the correct answers immediately. However, they gained new experiences by solving problems and engaging in discussions within their learning community. The participants' expectations included material that could help their learning, measures to prevent free-riders, and consideration of the learning process in evaluation factors. Although this study has sample limitations by targeting nursing students in only one region, it can be used to help operate collaborative problem-solving classes, as it reflects the real experiences and opinions of students.
Background: Problem-based learning (PBL) has introduced as an important part of pharmacy education in Korea as it is effective method to help students gain and apply knowledge with development of problem-solving, critical-thinking, and decision-making skills. In order to provide the effective PBL, a number of trained facilitators and suitable PBL rooms are required. However, these become a barrier in Korea as most pharmacy schools have one or two faculty members who majored in clinical pharmacy. Objective: This study was performed to implement and evaluate a modified PBL in gastrointestinal (GI) pharmacotherapy class facilitated by one instructor. Methods: A general information of traditional PBL for 6 hours through 3 days is introduced before initiating GI pharmacotherapy class. After 3 hour-GI pharmacotherapy classes for 6 weeks, modified PBL was implemented with one instructor to facilitate PBL for four small groups with 19 pharmacy students simultaneously. Modified PBL was incorporated with weekly mini-case discussion and presentation. Results: Students completed 15-question survey to evaluate modified PBL course, student performance, group performance, and facilitator performance. Eighty-four percent of students answered modified PBL was helpful to understand what they have learned. Mean score in group performance was higher than that of individual performance during modified PBL course. Overall, students reported modified PBL was useful in knowledge building. Conclusion: Modified PBL model without individual group facilitators in one classroom helped students to achieve self-directed, independent learning skills in an interactive and engaging environment.
Generally, a PLM education program in university consists of lectures of theory, software lab and software development raining as an advanced subject. Most industries want more than these, such as practical problem solving capabilities, teamwork skills and engineering communications including human relationship, rhetoric, technical writing, presentation and etc. Problem-Based Learning is a problem-stimulated and student-centered teaming method, and an innovative education strategy for collaborative and self-directed learning by applying real world problems. Education paradigm changes from "teaching" to "learning" accomplished by team working, and students are encouraged to develop, present, explain and defense their ideas, suggestions or solutions of a problem, and the "cooperative teaming" proceeds spontaneously during team operations. Co-operative education program is an into-grated academic model and a structured educational program combining classroom learning with productive work experience in a field related to a student's academic or career goals. Based on the partnership between academic institutions and industries, students are engaged in real and productive "work" in the industry, in contrast with merely observing. In this paper, PBL with Co-op program is suggested as an effective approach for PLM education, and we made and operated a PBL-based education course with industry co-op program. The Co-op education in industry accompanied with the PBL course in university can improve practical problem solving capabilities of students, including modeling and management of P3R(Product, Process, resource and Plant) using commercial PLM software tools. By the result, we found this to be an effective strategy for helping students, professors and industries succeed in engineering education, especially PLM area.
Objective: The aim of this study is to explore the variation in perceptions about problem-based learning(PBL) according to the level of academic achievement and learning attitude in the nursing students of a junior college (3-year program). Method: Students (n=39) learned the respiratory and cardiac system with seven PBL packages and group-based learning for a semester in 2002. Students were asked to write reflective journals that focused on their learning perception after an experience with each learning package. A total of 208 journals were used for analysis. Result: Students positively perceived that PBL making them increase their sense of responsibility for learning and felt satisfaction with the learning process, and had a confidence in the use of clinical nursing interventions. On the other hand, they negatively perceived that PBL was a burden because it took more time than traditional learning tasks, and they experienced an anxiety about regular tests and felt conflicts and diffidences in the learning process. The negative perceptions were expressed more often from students with a low academic achievement and low learning attitude compared to others. Conclusion: Students perceived the PBL as effective in understanding the learning concepts in the clinical practice environment. PBL need to be supplemented by feedback-based lecture and facilitative strategies for academically low-achieved students. Objective: The aim of this study is to explore the variation in perceptions about problem-based learning(PBL) according to the level of academic achievement and learning attitude in the nursing students of a junior college (3-year program).
Purpose: This study analyzed the effects of virtual reality simulation-based problem-based learning on nursing students' critical thinking ability, problem-solving ability, and self-efficacy in the nursing care of women undergoing induction of labor. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest and posttest design was employed. The study participants included 52 nursing students (24 in the experimental group and 28 in the control group). The experimental group took a problem-based learning (PBL) class in the first week, and then engaged in self-directed learning using virtual reality simulation. In the second week, lectures about emergency nursing care for induction of labor and drug administration were given. The control group participated in PBL in the first week and lectures in the second week. The study was conducted from April 17 to May 19, 2023. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test, Fisher exact test, analysis of variance, and the independent t-test. Results: Before-and-after differences between the two groups were statistically significant in problem solving ability (t=-5.47, p<.001) and self-efficacy (t=-5.87, p<.001). Critical thinking ability did not show a statistically significant difference between the two groups. The score for satisfaction with the virtual reality simulation program was 3.64±5.88 out of 5 in the experimental group. Conclusion: PBL education using a virtual reality simulation was found to be an effective way of teaching. Although convenience sampling was used, PBL education using virtual reality can be used as an educational strategy to enhance nursing students' problem-solving ability and self-efficacy.

Q-learning is a kind of reinforcement learning where the agent solves the given task based on rewards received from the environment. Most research done in the field of Q-learning has focused on discrete domains, although the environment with which the agent must interact is generally continuous. Thus we need to devise some methods that enable Q-learning to be applicable to the continuous problem domain. In this paper, an extended fuzzy rule is proposed so that it can incorporate Q-learning. The interpolation technique, which is widely used in memory-based learning, is adopted to represent the appropriate Q value for current state and action pair in each extended fuzzy rule. The resulting structure based on the fuzzy inference system has the capability of solving the continuous state about the environment. The effectiveness of the proposed structure is shown through simulation on the cart-pole system.
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to evaluate the application of the Problem-Based Learning(PBL) in nursing with regard to the learning process and learning outcomes. Method: PBL modules were provided to the students so that they could identify the nursing problems related to nutrition, regulation, and elimination, and implement appropriate nursing interventions according to the problems. PBL was also used to develop ability to use self-evaluation for nursing intervention outcomes. The modules were developed by the authors for the course, Nursing 1(3 credits) at Y university, and used during one semester, March to June 2003. Evaluation of the learning process and learning outcomes was done by self-report questionnaires and a semi-structured self -report developed by the authors. Result: The PBL evaluation included role of the facilitators, group work process, and self-directed learning attitude. The students evaluated the facilitator's role positively in fostering positive interactions and cooperative study among students and stimulating students to apply various problem-solving strategies. Students evaluated their own group work performances as a good opportunity to improve their group work participation, contribution, cooperation, and leadership through the PBL session. Their responsibility for their own learning and develop self-directed learning attitudes to connect present learning to long-term goals. Conclusion: Critical thinking, problem solving skills, self-directed learning and group work accomplishments in undergraduate student nurses were fostered and improved through the PBL program.
