  • It is necessary to study creative problem solving(CPS) in cooperative level because numerous studies have reported that group approaches to CPS are more effective than individual approaches. There are also lots of researches that an online environment is effective to promote cooperative interactions among group members. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop an online support system for cooperative and creative problem solving. First, in this paper we created an integrated CPS model from existing CPS models. Second, we designed principles of an online cooperative CPS(CCPS) based on the integrated CPS model. Third, we developed an online support system for the cooperative CPS. Lastly, we conducted formative evaluations of the developed system and suggested ideas for improvement of the system. The developed system provides an effective and efficient online learning environment for CCPS. CCPS means the cooperative thinking processes to solve certain problems through identifying problems, stating problems, reviewing the data related withe the problems, producing creative ideas and making group decisions related with the solutions.

  • There has been a gradually increasing focus on adopting mathematical modeling techniques into school curricula and classrooms as a method to promote students' mathematical problem solving abilities. However, this approach is not commonly realized in today's classrooms due to the difficulty in developing appropriate mathematical modeling problems. This research focuses on developing reformulation strategies for those problems with regard to mathematical modeling. As the result of analyzing existing textbooks across three grade levels, the majority of problems related to the real-world focused on the Operating and Interpreting stage of the mathematical modeling process, while no real-world problem dealt with the Identifying variables stage. These results imply that the textbook problems cannot provide students with any chance to decide which variables are relevant and most important to know in the problem situation. Following from these results, reformulation strategies and reformulated problem examples were developed that would include the Identifying variables stage. These reformulated problem examples were then applied to a 7th grade classroom as a case study. From this case study, it is shown that: (1) the reformulated problems that included authentic events and questions would encourage students to better engage in understanding the situation and solving the problem, (2) the reformulated problems that included the Identifying variables stage would better foster the students' understanding of the situation and their ability to solve the problem, and (3) the reformulated problems that included the mathematical modeling process could be applied to lessons where new mathematical concepts are introduced, and the cooperative learning environment is required. This research can contribute to school classroom's incorporation of the mathematical modeling process with specific reformulating strategies and examples.

  • The purposes of this study were to examine the general tendency of knowledge and problem solving abilities of children to cope with climate change and to find out whether there is a difference in the ability to cope with climate change based on the gender and age of young children. For this purpose, 129 children aged 5 and 6 who are attended in day care center in Seoul and Gyeonggi area were selected. We used 10 questions to measure climate change response knowledge modified environment conservation knowledge checklist and used five problem solving situations to measure climate change response problem solving ability modified safety problem solving ability test item. The collected data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, two-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. As a result, 6-year-old children's knowledge of climate change response and ability to solve climate change problems was higher than that of 5-year-olds. There was no gender difference in knowledge of climate change response and ability to solve climate change. The higher the knowledge level of children's response to climate change, the higher their ability to solve climate change response problems. The results of this study confirmed the association between children's knowledge of climate change response and problem solving ability and showed that a more systematic curriculum for improving knowledge and problem solving ability for preventing climate change needs to be provided to children.

  • Recently, corporate environment is faced with uncertainty that did not suffer in the past. In addition, as the supply chain was expanded and lengthened, the flow of information and material was complicated. Increase in complexity which amplifies the variability of the individual steps in supply chains further adds to the uncertainty. The bullwhip effect that refers the phenomenon where order variability increases as the orders move upstream in the supply chain became serious. The bullwhip effect is more and more important especially for the enterprise in the supply chain. So, there are many studies now since it was observed about 100 years ago. The aim of this paper is to analyze how to solve the bullwhip effect by using TRIZ (Teoriya Resheniya Izobretatelskikh Zadach). TRIZ is one of the most famous tools for creative solving that applied in many fields ranging from management as well as engineering. Among problems, the dilemma needs creative solutions that require handling the contradictions inherent in that. Among various kinds of problem solving techniques, TRIZ provides the concept of physical contradiction as a common problem solving principle. This study provides a simple process of solving problem explains a case of solving problem in the management field and shows the availability of theory in the inventory control. In accordance with the proposed solving process, the paper analyzes the bullwhip effect by applying the TRIZ tools and then identifies the solution directions. Next, the current studies are classified by the above analysis and important managerial concepts are proposed. Lastly, directions for future research on this area are suggested.

  • Unlike that of most management science methodologies, the focus in systems thinking is not on \\\"solving\\\" problems or seeking an optimal solution. Conventional problem solving does not explicitly consider the context of the problem. This implies that the \\\"hospital financial management problem\\\" could be neatly isolated from its environmental and external factors. System thinking and system archetypes, in contrast, acknowledges the messiness of the world and views a problem in the context of its environment. This is one reason why qualitative variables play an important role in system thinking, as these variables represent conditions or phenomena that cannot be measured or accounted in a strictly quantitative approaches. In this paper we present specific healthcare system archetypes which consider such external influences in the healthcare industry in Australia and observe their behavior over time. behavior over time.
