Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the level of communication, problem-solving, and self-directed learning competencies, academic and English achievement of healthcare major students in university and to determine the effect of three main competencies on their academic and English achievement. Methods: The participants were college students studying in health care related major at a four-year university in D-city who agreed to participate in this study. Some of their data were intentionally excluded as their answers were incomplete or missing and finally 272 surveys were analyzed. Results: It was found that they have high level of general life competencies of which the subcategories are communication, problem-solving, and self-directed learning competency. GPA and TOEIC score which are the indicators of academic and English achievement were found to be correlated with the level of three competencies. Self-directed learning competency is assumed to be main cause variable of these achievement. Conclusion: As those students who have higher academic and English achievement also show high level of communication, problem-solving and self-directed learning competency. It is argued that a new curriculum that can contribute to improve communication, problem-solving and self-directed learning competency should be developed and implemented.
Purpose: This study investigated the effects of simulation-based nursing education (for the care of congestive heart failure patients) on self-directed learning competency, clinical knowledge and problem-solving ability among nursing students. Methods: A one-group, pre-post design was utilized with 87 nursing students as the subjects. The scenario of simulation-based nursing education was created using a high-fidelity patient stimulator, and consisted of four states ((1) assessment, (2) reviewing laboratory data and administering medications and treatments, (3) managing increased dyspnea and decreased urine output, and (4) handling the "getting better" state). The simulation-based nursing education included orientation, team-based learning, team-based practice, and debriefing. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients and paired t-tests. Results: The scores on the factors for self-directed learning competency (t=-2.57, p= .011), clinical knowledge (t=-6.85, p<.001), and problem-solving ability (t=-3.01, p= .003) increased significantly after the education intervention. Conclusion: Simulation-based nursing education is useful in improving self-directed learning competency, clinical knowledge, and problem-solving ability in nursing students.

Problem solving competency has always been a prime issue in education, and it is defined as core skills of a life competency or as 21st century skills that students need to successfully learn. This study aims to discover the scope and impact of digital textbooks on students' competencies. This study also examines meaningful differences brought about using digital textbooks and taking lessons specifically adapted to improve 5th grade students' problem solving competencies. The pretest-posttest control group design was adopted and a performance-based measurement tool for problem solving competency was developed and applied. The results indicate that the classes using digital textbooks achieved higher scores in problem solving competency. Also, a lesson that was specifically adapted with the aim to improve students' problem solving competency had a positive influence on students' achievement. Moreover, there was reciprocal influence between using digital textbooks and adapting instructions to improve problem solving competency. In conclusion, the effect of digital textbooks should be discussed further while also considering the influence of teachers' instructional strategies.
The purpose of this study was to develop and examine the effectiveness (knowledge, attitude, skills of Evidence-Based Practice, and problem solving skills) of nursing information literacy competency enhancement program for nursing students. It is a pre-post design study carried out with a single group of 72 sophomores in a nursing college. Nursing information literacy competency enhancement program of 6 times (8 hours) was provided to nursing students. Our results have demonstrated that knowledge, attitude, skills of evidence-based practice, and problem solving skills were significantly higher in nursing students. In conclusion, the nursing information literacy competency enhancement program was effective in promoting knowledge, attitude, skills of evidence-based practice and problem solving skills. Based on our results, the nursing information literacy competency enhancement program can provide a basis for enhancing evidence-based nursing practice competencies and problem solving skills of nursing students.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to identify the effects of problem based learning (PBL) combined with simulation on the basic nursing competency of nursing students. Method: A pretest-posttest design with a nonequivalent control group was used to examine the effects of problem based learning combined with simulation for 9 weeks in a group of 283 nursing students. The PBL group of 141 students participated in PBL classes with simulation, 4 hours a week for 9 weeks compared to control group of 142 students who received the usual fundamental nursing class. Results: The group that had PBL with simulation showed significant increases in problem solving and self-directed learning competency, although there were no significant changes in communication competency as compared to the control group. Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrate that PBL with simulation for nursing students may increase problem solving and self-directed learning competency and suggest that utilizing this teaching-learning method may be beneficial as an effective nursing education strategy.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impacts of Collaborative Problem solving for Character competency (CoProC) strategy on the practical character competency and collaborative problem solving competency in middle school. For this study, 49 seventh grade students (two classes) were selected for use applying the CoProC strategy (CoProC group) while 46 students (two classes) were used for traditional lecture and experimental class (comparative group). In the result, CoProC group showed a statistically significant result in practical character competency than the comparative group. In the sub items of the competency, the CoProC group showed result statistically significant in cooperation, communication, responsibility, and positive self-understanding than the comparative group. Analysis of the effect size of students' practical character competency showed that the CoProC group results showed more effective than the comparative group in terms of care, cooperation, communication, honesty, responsibility, positive self-understanding, and self-regulation. In addition, we investigated the effect of the CoProC strategy on collaborative problem solving competency. As a result, it showed a large effect in the total score of collaborative problem solving competency. Among the sub items of the competency, 'exploration and understanding of members' showed a small size of effect and 'Establishing and maintaining team organization' showed a medium size of effect. 'Communication' and 'self-reflection' showed a large effect. CoProC strategy embedded in Science subject could improve students' collaborative problem solving competency through the process of scientific communication in the scientific inquiry process.
The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of problem solving ability and critical thinking disposition on communication competency of nursing students. The subjects of this study were 289 students at two universities located in C and G province. The collected data were analyzed by multiple regression analysis. The results showed that communication competency of nursing students was positively correlated with problem solving ability and critical thinking disposition. Communication competency was explained 40.6% of the variance in critical thinking and problem solving ability. Therefore, in order to improve the communication competency of nursing students, it is necessary to develop an educational program that improves critical thinking disposition and problem solving ability.

As the economic, social, and environmental problems of the local community reach a serious level, our society is realizing the need to foster young talents who discover opportunities in local issues through entrepreneurship education and create social values through creative challenges. However, entrepreneurship education programs are generally focused on commerciality, so customized education programs to solve regional problems are insufficient. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a community problem-solving entrepreneurship curriculum. In this study, a competency based curriculum model was applied to develop the curriculum, and regional problem-solving entrepreneurship competencies were derived through expert advice from a total of 10 people. In the process, the Delphi methodology was additionally used to reduce the possibility of errors in the competency model. As a result of the study, a total of 23 regional problem-solving entrepreneurship competencies were confirmed, and knowledge(K) - skill(S) - attitude(A) by competency consisted of 5, 9, and 9, respectively. By applying this to Dunham's problem-solving six-step model, modular learning support measures were developed in the order of phase 1(problem discovery), phase 2(problem analysis), phase 3(plan), phase 4(measure), and phase 5(evaluation). This study is meaningful in that it integrated theory and practice by developing specific entrepreneurship curriculum and learning support measures based on the theoretical model devised in social welfare. In addition, it has implications in that it developed a regional problem-solving entrepreneurship competency model based on expert advice and proposed a specific curriculum based on this.
This study was done to develop and validate a path model for the causal relationship of nursing information literacy competency and problem solving, self-direct learning, and clinical performance ability of nursing students. Subject were 208 nursing students in the fourth grade of nursing school. Data were collected from June 4 to June 18, 2018. The nursing information literacy competency of nursing students showed direct effects on problem solving ability (${\gamma}=.70$, p<.001) and direct effects on self-directed learning ability (${\gamma}=.53$, p<.001). Nursing information literacy competency showed direct (${\gamma}=.31$, p<.001) and indirect effects (${\gamma}=.31$, p=.007) on clinical performance ability. These variables explained for 46.2% of clinical performance ability. Therefore, it is recommended to develop an education program that can enhance the nursing information literacy competency for improving the problem solving, self-directed learning, and clinical performance ability of nursing students.
