  • In this paper, we consider a generalized rule of retransmission request, identified as (Μ, $\sigma$) rule for multicopy transmission ARQ. Following a revised rule to conform with a strict criterion for requesting a retransmission, we can reduce the probability that a packet accepted by the receiving node is still being infected with errors. In turn, such amendment invokes a degradation of delay and throughput performance. For a quantitative evaluation of (Μ, $\sigma$) rule, we develop an analytical method to calculate probability of error remains, maximum throughput, average and peak delays, and delay variation. From the numerical examples made by use of the analytical method, we observe a performance trade-off between probability of error remains and delay/throughput. We also confirm the adaptability of (Μ, $\sigma$) rule to meet various QoS requirements.

  • This paper considers the mutual interference problem of several users employing the same FH systems in selected multiple user environments. The environment consists of a desired transmitter-receiver pair located in an area where there are M interfering users distributed in accordance with a specified probability density function. Both coherent Phase-Shift-Keyed and incoherent Frequencey-Shift-Keyed modulations are considered. The general formulas of the average bit error probability are derived. The calculation results are summarized and analyzed. The average bit error probability is highly dependent on the relative location of interferences to the desired link, the time duty factor of the hopping and the number of available channels.

  • Alamouti space-time code (STC) is a part of the UMTS-WCDMA standard. However, up to the best of our knowledge no exact closed-form outage and bit error probability (BEP) formulas for this famous code exists. Evaluating its performance through simulations is time-consuming and therefore, there should be analytical performance graphs to serve as a reference which are derived in this paper for coherently MPSK-modulated data. Additionally, analytical results take into account different channel fading levels from transmit antennas to receive ones.

  • In this paper, the reverse link performance of an imperfect power controlled DS/CDMA cellular system that uses a base station array antenna which can effectively remove the multiple access interference is analyzed considering both beam forming algorithm and power control error in shadowing. The blocking probability of the DS/CDMA cellular system based on array parameters, Eb/No and statistics of interference is derived, and then the system capacity corresponding to a certain blocking probability is calculated. On the assumption that the blocking probability is set 1 %, the system capacity using MCGM algorithm with 12 antenna arrays is increased about 59 % than that using 8 antenna arrays when power control error is 2.5 ㏈.

  • The Fano metric is the maximum likelihood decoding choice for convlutional code for binary symmetric channel. The Fano metric assumes that it has previous knowledge of channel error probability. However, the bit errors in real channel occur in bursts and the channel error probability can not be known exactly. Thus, the Fano metric is not the maximum likelihood choice for bursty-noise channel. In this paper universal metri which dose not require the previous knowlege of the channel transition probability is used for sequential decoding. It is shown that the complexity of the universal is much less than that of the Fano metric bursty-noise channel, since it is estimated on a branch by branch basis.

  • We examine the DS/SSMA system which is employing coherent BPSK with RAKE receiver. We adop Nakagami m-distribution as a multipath fading model. First, we analyze the performances of the system in the single cell environment and obtain the other-cell interference according to power control error. And considering the other-cell interference into the analysis of single cell system, we examine the cellular CDMA network. The average BER and outage probability are the figures of merit that characterize the system performance. The required BER, 1E-3, and required outage probability are the figures of merit that characterize the system performance. The requeired BER, 1E-3, and required outage probability, 1% for the voice transmission is considered to acquire the capacity of system.

  • In this paper a characteristics of image which can be segmented based on the thresholding technique using a histogram was investigated employing 3 parameters: the variance of pixel value, the average mean difference between target and background and the target size. The threshold value for the histogram segmentation was determined by applying the hypothesis testing theory. The performance of the selected threshold was evaluated by computing a probability of error. Since a priori probability can be easily obtained from the histogram, it was found that the Bayes decision rule which theoretically guarantees the minimum probability of error works better than the minimax criterion rule.

  • Predicting the future condition of machine and assessing the remaining useful life are the center of prognostics. This paper contributes a new prognostic method based on grey model and survival probability. The first step of the method is building a normal condition model then determining the error indicator. In the second step, the survival probability value is obtained based on the error indicator. Finally, grey model coupled with one-step-ahead forecasting technique are employed in the last step. This work has developed a modified grey model in order to improve the accuracy of prediction. For evaluating the proposed method, real trending data of low methane compressor acquired from condition monitoring routine were employed.

  • A new approximation method was proposed for treating the non-resonant spatial self-shielding effects of double heterogeneous region such as the double heterogeneous effect of VHTR fuel compact in the thermal energy range and that of BP compact with BISO. The method was developed based on the effective homogenization method and a spherical unit cell model with explicit coated layers and a matrix layer. The self-shielding factor was derived from the relation between the collision probabilities for a double heterogeneous compact and the effective cross section for the homogenized compact. First, the collision probabilities and transmission probabilities for all layers of the spherical model were calculated using conventional collision probability solver. Then, the effective cross section for the homogenized sphere cell representing the homogenized compact was obtained from the transmission probability calculated using the probability density function of a chord length. The verification calculations revealed that the proposed method can predict the self-shielding factor with a maximum error of 2.3% and the double heterogeneous effect with a maximum error of 200 pcm in the typical VHTR problems with various packing fractions and BP compact sizes.

  • A hybrid free-space-optical/radio-frequency (FSO/RF) communication system is considered, with the help of amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying. We consider various weather conditions to investigate their effects on the system's performance. We begin by obtaining the cumulative distribution function and probability density function of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio for the AF dual-hop FSO communication system with RF backup link. Then, these results are used to derive closed-form expressions for the outage probability, average bit-error rate, and average ergodic capacity. The results show that the considered system efficiently employs the complementary nature of FSO and RF links, resulting in impressive performance improvements compared to non-hybrid systems.
