Life cycle analysis of concrete and asphalt used in road pavements

  • The article examines the impact differences between producing concrete and asphalt. Both materials are widely used in the construction industry. Construction activities account for a large portion of greenhouse gases. Therefore, it is important to consider the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to reduce environmental impacts. In this study, the material processes were inputted into an LCA program called SimaPro. The database used for the study was Ecoinvent as it is one of the major databases within SimaPro. The materials were compared against impacts per kg of material produced as the functional unit. Each process was created using the materials, energy and transportation required to produce the materials. Waste streams were also included in the process to determine the impacts after the product was done with its useful life. Using the ReCiPe method, an LCA was conducted. Midpoint and endpoint categories were examined for both the productions. The processes had similar results for the human health and ecosystems categories; however asphalt was marginally higher for both. Asphalt had exceeded concrete in the resource impact category by 100 mPt. The results indicate that concrete is the more sustainable building material. Determination of various impacts of the materials is important for material selection.

  • 전 세계는 물 부족 문제를 해결하기 위한 대체수자원 개발에 다양한 노력을 기울이고 있으며, 그 중에 해수 담수화 기술이 가장 주목받고 있다. 특히 역삼투 방식의 해수담수화기술은 기존 증발식에 비해 에너지 소비량이 적기 때문에 매년 10% 이상의 높은 성장률을 기록하고 있다. 그러나 역삼투 방식의 해수담수화는 지표수를 이용하는 시스템에 비해 상당히 많은 에너지를 필요로 한다. 따라서 에너지 효율을 높이기 위한 다양한 공정 개발이 시도되고 있으며, 그 중에 대표적인 기술이 삼투현상을 이용한 FO (Forward Osmosis)와 PRO (Pressure Retarded Osmosis) 공정이다. 본 논문에서는 역삼투막을 이용한 해수담수화 기술의 현황과 한계를 살펴보고, 현 해수담수화공정을 보완할 기술로써 FO와 PRO 공정개발에 관한 최근 연구 동향과 이러한 신기술의 상용화에 필수적으로 요구되는 막에 대한 개발 현황을 살펴보았다.

그린 데이터센터 구축 사례에 기반한 그린 IT 도입 방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Introduction of Green IT Based on the Cases of Implementing Green Internet Data Center)

  • 그린 IT는 IT 기반의 친환경 기술을 포괄하는 개념으로서 넓은 범위에서는 유해물질 대체, 에너지 효율화, 대체에너지 등 친환경적 기술을 의미한다. 현재 IT 산업의 흐름은 서버발열 및 데이터센터 에너지 절감 방안 등에 초점을 맞추어 그린 IT를 정의하고 있다. 본 연구는 문헌조사를 통해 그린 IT의 개념을 정의하고, 그린 IT가 나타난 배경과 필요성을 통해 현재 IT시장에 새롭게 등장한 그린 IT의 이슈 및 각 나라별 전략 및 국내의 전략을 비교분석하였다. 이를 구체적으로 살펴보면, 최근 IT 및 데이터센터 시장 전반 향후 변화 및 흐름을 볼 때 그런 IT는 그런 데이터센터 도입에 초점을 맞추어 사업의 방향과 전략을 수립하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 본 연구는 국내외 기업의 그린 데이터센터 도입을 통한 그린 IT 구축 사례를 통해서 그린 IT 도입기준과 필요조건, 환경평가 및 설계 그리고 구체적인 추진전략과 향후 과제를 제시하였다.

환경호르몬 저감행동 영향요인 (Factors associated with Behaviors that Reduce Exposure to Environmental Hormones among Nursing Students)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to examine the factors associated with behavior that reduces exposure to environmental hormones among nursing students. Methods: Data were collected from 160 nursing students in D and B cities, using self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0, and the analyses included descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient test, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Behavior that reduces exposure to environmental hormones differed significantly in terms of the participants' knowledge about environmental hormones. Behavior that reduces exposure to environmental hormones was negatively correlated with knowledge of environmental hormones, attitude towards pro-environmental behavior, and environmental self-efficacy; these factors were significant predictors of behavior that reduces exposure to environmental hormones, and accounted for 27.0% of the variance. Conclusion: Environmental self-efficacy was identified as the most significant factor affecting behavior that reduces exposure to environmental hormones in nursing students. Therefore, it is necessary to develop programs to improve pro-environmental behavior and environmental self-efficacy in nursing students.

그린 마케팅 전략을 위한 친환경 패션제품에 대한 소비자의 태도와 구매행동에 관한 연구 (A study on the consumers' attitudes toward pro-environment and purchasing behavior of eco-friendly fashion products for green marketing strategy)

  • This study set out to investigate consumers' attitudes toward pro-environment, and their actual purchasing behavior. It aimed to empirically examine the effects of the consumers' attitudes toward pro-environmental products, the importance of the product attributes and the perceived value of the companies' environmental activities, on their purchasing behavior of eco-friendly fashion products, including their satisfaction, trust, and repurchase intention. The questionnaires were administered on 304 married women with previous experience of buying eco-friendly fashion products. The results were as follows. First, the consumers' behavioral patterns in terms of environmental concerns and the purchasing of eco-friendly household items were significantly positive in relation to the purchasing behaviors of eco-friendly fashion products. Second, the importance of eco-friendly attributes was significantly positive in relation to the purchasing behaviors of eco-friendly fashion products. Third, the perceived value of corporate environmental activity was not related to the purchasing behaviors of eco-friendly fashion products. Finally, the purchasing behavior of eco-friendly fashion products was significantly positive in relation to the satisfaction with eco-friendly fashion products as well as the trust and repurchase intention, and satisfaction and trust positively affected the repurchase intention. The implication of the research and direction for future study were discussed.

SWRO-PRO 복합해수담수화 기술의 현재와 미래 (The present and future of SWRO-PRO hybrid desalination technology development)

  • Desalination is getting more attention as an alternative to solve a global water shortage problem in the future. Especially, a desalination technology is being expected as a new growth engine of Korea's overseas plant business besides one of the solutions of domestic water shortage problem. In the past, a thermal evaporation technology was a predominant method in desalination market, but more than 75% of the current market is hold by a membrane-based reverse osmosis technology because of its lower energy consumption rate for desalination. In the future, it is expected to have more energy efficient desalination process. Accordingly, various processes are being developed to further enhance the desalination energy efficiency. One of the promising technologies is a desalination process combined with Pressure Retarded Osmosis (PRO) process. The PRO technology is able to generate energy by using osmotic pressure of seawater or desalination brine. And the other benefits are that it has no emission of $CO_2$ and the limited impact of external environmental factors. However, it is not commercialized yet because a high-performance PRO membrane and module, and a PRO system optimization technology is not sufficiently developed. In this paper, the recent research direction and progress of the SWRO-PRO hybrid desalination was discussed regarding a PRO membrane and module, an energy recovery system, pre-treatment and system optimization technologies, and so on.

웰빙식생활에 대한 소비자인식과 웰빙지향 소비자행동 -기혼여성 소비자의 구매, 사용, 처분행동을 중심으로 (Consumer consciousness toward well-being and well-being oriented consumer behaviors according to the dietary life -Focused on purchasing, using, and disposal behavior of married women-)

  • The purposes of this study were to find the sub-factors of consumer consciousness toward well-being and to identify the variables influencing their well-being oriented consumer behaviors in the area of dietary life of married women. 579 married women were surveyed by internet portal site azoomma.com. The collected data were treated with the SPSS Windows 12.0 program and analyzed in terms of frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, oneway ANOVA, factor analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The findings were summarized as follow: 1. Consumer consciousness toward well-being has four sub-factors; pro-environmental attitude, personal and family health, means of business, and consciousness regarding others. 2. In the multiple regression analysis, concerns of information, price level, consciousness of personal and family health, health status, educational level explained the purchasing behavior about 25.7%. On the other hand, health status, pro-environmental attitude, consciousness of personal and family health, consciousness regarding others, and concerns of information explanined the using behaviors about 17.0%. Pro-environmental attitude, health status, consciousness of personal and family health, consciousness regarding others, and status of employment were effective variables, and explained the disposal behavior about 19.5%.

The Effect of CAPTCHA Exposure on Traveler's Online Behaviors

  • CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) is everywhere. This research explores whether and how travelers' upfront exposure to a CAPTCHA influences their subsequent behaviors. In the travel decision-making context, we investigated the relationship between CAPTCHA and travelers' hotel preferences and intent to use cryptocurrency during the trip. In two experimental studies, we found that travelers exposed to a CAPTCHA (vs. not) preferred a robot-staffed to a human-staffed hotel (Study 1) and a pro-environmental to a quality hotel (Study 2). Exposure to a CAPTCHA also influences travelers' intent to use cryptocurrency during travel (Study 2). Preference for a pro-environmental hotel does not depend on the formats of CAPTCHA ("I am not a robot" or "I am human") while intent to use cryptocurrency is higher when travelers were exposed to the "I am not a robot" than "I am human" CAPTCHA. The results of two exploratory studies suggest several potential mechanisms by which CAPTCHAs affect travelers' behaviors and call for more research on this topic.

셀룰로오스에 의한 지지체 친수화가 압력지연삼투막 성능에 미치는 영향 (Hydrophilizing Effect of Support on PRO Membrane Performance through Cellulose Solution Treatment)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 지지체의 친수화가 압력지연삼투(Pressure retarded osmosis, PRO)막의 투과특성에 미치는 영향에 대해서 알아보고자 하였다. 소수성 지지체인 폴리에스테르를 친수성 고분자인 셀룰로오스 용액을 사용하여 친수화도를 조절하였다. 지지체의 친수화 특성만을 파악하기 위해서 지지층 없이 동일한 활성층을 사용하여 PRO 막 투과 특성을 비교하였다. 사용된 활성층은 1,4-dioxane과 cellulose tri-acetate (CTA, 13 wt%)를 사용하여 제조하였으며, $5kgf/cm^2$ 압력 하에서 행한 PRO 성능 평가의 경우 투과도가 친수화된 지지체를 사용한 경우와 친수화되지 않은 경우에 각각 $1.2L/m^2hr$$0.8L/m^2hr$로 친수화된 지지체를 사용할 경우 약 50% 투과량이 증가되는 특성을 보였다. 그러나 셀룰로오스 농도 변화에 따른 지지체의 친수화도 증가가 투과량 변화를 가져오지는 않았다. 이는 지지체를 친수화하기 위해 사용된 셀룰로오스의 농도가 증가함에 따라 지지체의 기공이 막히는 현상에 기인한 것으로 보인다. 이러한 결과를 통해 정삼투공정에서 투과유량을 높이기 위해서는 지지체로서 친수성 소재를 사용하여 분리막을 제조함과 동시에 지지체 기공을 유지하는 것이 중요함을 확인하였다.
