Prism-Coupling 방법에 의한 이온교환 도파로 해석 (Analysis of ion-exchanged waveguides by using Prism-Coupling method)

  • We have investigated the characteristics of planar optical waveguides formed by silver ion-exchange. Experimental values of the effective indices of guided modes were obtained by measuring the synchronous angles of strongest coupling. Definition of an effective diffusion constant leads to the mode-dispersion curves applicable over a wide range of fabrication conditions. In order to compare experimental and theoretical results, We have plotted each mode index of a wide range of fabrication conditions.

프리즘과 광섬유-평면도파로의 소산장 결합을 이용한 자외선 센서 (UV Sensor using Evanescent Field Coupling of Prism and Fiber-to-Planar Waveguide Coupler)

  • A novel UV sensor was manufactured and characterized using the evanescentfield coupling between fiber-planar waveguide (PWG) coupler and prism. A spiroxazine dye was chosen as planar waveguide because its photochromic isomerization induced by UV irradiation. A novel UV sensor was proposed to measure the variation of refractive index and absorption coefficient simultaneously. The wavelength responses of these sensors by UV exposure times were measured 0.48 nm/sec, 0.757 nm/sec, and ATR output power variations were measured $-0.424{\mu}W$/sec and $-0.62{\mu}W$/sec when UV exposure power were 3 mW and 5 mW, respectively.

  • 저손실의 높은 편광 소멸비를 갖는 LiNbO$_3$ 도파로를 만들기 위하여 고온 양자교환 방법을 이용하였다. 이 방법으로 제작된 도파로의 굴절률 특성을 분석하기 위하여 프리즘 결합기 방법으로 도파 모드를 측정하고 IWKB(inverse WKB) 방법을 사용하여 표면 굴절률 변화와 깊이에 대한 굴절률 분포 특성을 관찰하였다. 이러한 방법으로 고온 양자교환법의 주요 인자인 양자교환 온도, LS 농도, 양자교환 시간에 대한 굴절률 변화를 분석하였다.

  • The resonance properties due to the surface plasmon(SP) excitation of metal nanoparticles make the nanocomposite films promising for various applications such as optical switching devices. In spite of the well-known ultra-sensitive operation of optical switches based on a guided wave, the application of nanocomposite film(NC) has inherent limitation originating from the excessive optical loss related with the surface plasmon resonance(SPR). In this study, we addressed this problem and present the experimental and theoretical analysis on the pump-probe optical switching in prism-coupled Au(1 vol.%):$SiO_2$ nanocomposite waveguide film. The guided mode was successfully generated using a near infrared probe beam of 1550 nm and modulated with an external pump beam of 532 nm close to the SPR wavelength. We extend our approach to ultra-fast operation using a pulsed laser with 5 ns pulse width. To improve the switching speed through the reduction in thermal loading effect accompanied by the resonant absorption of pump beam light, we adopted a metallic film as a coupling layer instead of low-index dielectric layer between the high-index SF10 prism and NC slab waveguide. We observed great enhancement in switching speed for the case of using metallic coupling layer, and founded a distinct difference in origin of optical nonlinearities induced during switching operation using cw and ns laser.

Optimization of Ultrathin Backlight Unit by Using a Tapered Light Guide Film Studied by Optical Simulation

  • Optical structures of a tapered ultra-thin light guide film (LGF) were optimized by optical simulation for increasing coupling efficiency between light sources and the LGF. A serration pattern on the entrance side surface could provide a comparable coupling efficiency to that of the conventional LGF where a linear, asymmetric prism array was formed on the taper surface. Several micro-patterns were applied to the top and/or bottom surface of the LGF for achieving better luminance property, and it was found that an optimized micro-pyramid pattern exhibited the highest average luminance together with satisfactory luminance uniformity.

  • Quantitative analysis of optical scattering intensities from a Au nanoparticle with a diameter of 100 nm, which is effected by the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), were numerically carried out by using a dark-field detection scheme on prism basal plane for two different beam incident modes of reflectance (R-mode) and transmittance (T-mode). Two-dimensional finite difference time domain (FDTD) algorithm was adopted, and its applicabilibility was verified by comparing the simulation results with the theoretical ones. Simulation results of the scattered light intensities from a Au nanoparticle revealed that the scattered intensity of the T-mode was much stronger than that of R-mode. Comparison of the calculated results with the theoretical intensity distribution on the prism showed that the scattered intensity is marimized when the evanescent field, which is generated from the interface of prism and air at TIR angle, is coupled with Au nanoparticle.

Quasi-steady three-degrees-of-freedom aerodynamic model of inclined/yawed prisms: Formulation and instability for galloping and static divergence

  • In this study, a generalized three-degree-of-freedom (3-DoF) analytical model is formulated to predict linear aerodynamic instabilities of a prism under quasi-steady (QS) conditions. The prism is assumed to possess a generic cross-section exposed to turbulent wind flow. The 3-DoFs encompass two orthogonal horizontal directions and rotation about the prism body axis. Inertial coupling is considered to account for the non-coincidence of the mass center and the rotation center. The aerodynamic force coefficients-drag, lift, and moment-depend on the Reynolds number based on relative flow velocity, angle of attack, and the angle between the wind and the cable. Aerodynamic forces are linearized with respect to the static equilibrium configuration and mean wind velocity. Routh-Hurwitz and Liénard and Chipart criteria are used in the eigenvalue problem, yielding an analytical solution for instabilities in galloping and static divergence types. Additionally, the minimum structural damping and stiffness required to prevent these instabilities are numerically determined. The proposed 3-DoF instability model is subsequently applied to a conductor with ice accretion and a full-scale dry inclined cable. In comparison to existing models, the developed model demonstrates superior prediction accuracy for unstable regions compared with results in wind tunnel tests.

유기물 박막에서의 광도파 현상 (Optical Waveguiding in the Polymerized Organic Films)

  • 슬라이드 글라스와 위에 1μm 가량의 산화막을 입힌 실리콘 웨이퍼 위에, 폴리우레탄이나 에폭시 등의 유기 물질을 스핀너 (spinner)로 코우팅시켜서 평판형 유전체 도파관(dielectric slab waveguide)을 제작하고, 프리즘으로 빛을 커플링 (coupling) 시켜서 광도파 현상을 화인했다. 실리콘 웨이퍼나 슬라이드 글라스 위에다 알루미늄이나 은(Ag)을 진공증착시킨 것을 기관으로 사용하여 금각판 도파관(metal clad waveguide)을 제작하고, 프리즘 2개로 커플링 (coupling), 디커플링 (decoupling)시켜서 모우드 라인(mode line)을 관찰했다. 포토리지스트 K. P. R.의 굴절율이 폴리우레탄의 굴절율보다 큰 점을 이용하여 2층 구조의 박막 프리즘을 제작하고 빛이 꺾이는 현상을 확인했다.

$LP_{11}$ 결모양 빛살거르게를 사용한 $LP_{11}$ 결모양 빛살 광섬유 공진고리 간섭계 ($LP_{11}$ Mode Fiber Optic Resonant Ring Interferometer with a $LP_{11}$ Modal Filter)

  • 홑 결모양 빛살이 도파되는 광섬유와 두 결모양 빛살이 도파되는 광섬유를 스러지는 들 결합(evanescent field coupling)을 써서 두 결모양 빛살($LP_{01}, LP_{11}$)이 도파되는 광섬유에서 $LP_{11}$ 결모양 빛살만 뽑아 내었다. 이 $LP_{11}$ 결모양 빛살이 도파되는 광섬유에 짝짓게 세 개를 제작해 두 개는 결합시켜 $LP_{11}$결모양 빛살 광섬유 공진고리 간섭계를 구성 하였다. 구성된 간섭계의 출력 광섬유의 짝짓게판과 프리즘 츨력 짝짓게를 결합시켜 광섬유로부터 방사 결모양 빛살을 뽑아 내어 도파되는 결모양수를 조사하였다. 외부 섭동이 간섭계 고리에 가해질 때 프리즘 출력 짝짓게에서 나온 방사 결모양 빛살의 변화와 출력끝에서 나온 방사 빛살모양의 변화를 조사하였다. $LP_{11}$ 결모양 빛살의 edit 두 반구에 광 다이오우드 2개를 놓아 빛살을 받아 오실로스코우프에 입력시켜 Lissajous 모양을 만들어 그 궤도에서 돌아가는 방향으로 위상변화의 증가 혹은 감소되는 방향을 알 수 있다.

  • In recent years, Anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) has become popular and attractive materials. It can be easily fabricated and self-organized pore structures. It has been widely used as a biosensor membrane, photonic crystal for optical circuit and template for nanotube growth etc. In previous papers, the theory was developed that AAO shows anisotropic optical properties, since it has anisotropic structure with numerous cylindrical pores. It gives rise to the anisotropy of the refractive index called as birefringence. It can be used as conventional polarizing elements with high efficiency and low cost. Therefore, we would like to compare the theory and experimental results in this study. One method which can measure effective refractive index of thin film is the prism coupling technique. It can give accurate results fast and simply. Furthermore, we can also measure separately the refractive index with different polarization using polarization of the laser (TE mode and TM mode). We calculated the effective refractive index with effective medium approximations (EMAs) by pore size in the SEM image. EMAs are physical models that describe the macroscopic system as the homogeneous and typical method of all mean field theories.
