  • A new active lossless snubber for half-bridge dual converter(that is called 'dual converter') is proposed in this paper. It features soft switching(ZVS) as well as turn-off snubbing in both main and auxiliary switches. As it uses parasitic components, such as leakage inductances and switch output capacitances etc, it helps the dual converter to operate at the higher frequency with a higher efficiency and smaller size reactive components. The operational principle, theoretical analysis, and design consideration are presented. To confirm the operation, features and validity of the proposed circuit, simulated results from an 1kW, 24V/DC-250V/DC are presented.

  • This study was made to objectify the principle of oriental medical prescriptions so that we could obtain the principle and the formulation of them For that purpose, we analysed the formula and rule of 205 prescriptions recorded in Gum-goe-yo-rak, which have a few of components, and are widely used in clinical from ancient times to these days. At first we classified those prescriptions by their effect. Then we re-classified the herbs of the effect groups into four natures (cold, hot, warm and cool) and five kinds of flavors (sour, bitter, sweet, acrid and salty). And we classified the herbs into three grades - superior, medium, and inferior - which were used in Shen Nong's Herbal Classic. By these means, we statistically evaluated the prescriptions recorded in Gum-goe-yo-rak based on the Four Regular Components(Monarch, Minister, Assistant, and Laborer). As a result we could obtain some facts about the prescriptions recorded in Gum-goe-yo-rak, those are what kind of herbal material was used frequently and distribution of the natures flavors and grades according to thier effects. And we are sure that these results can be great help for establishment of fundamental formulation of theory of traditional herbal medicinal polyprescription.

  • Intrusion Detection System (IDS) in general considers a big amount of data that are highly redundant and irrelevant. This trait causes slow instruction, assessment procedures, high resource consumption and poor detection rate. Due to their expensive computational requirements during both training and detection, IDSs are mostly ineffective for real-time anomaly detection. This paper proposes a dimensionality reduction technique that is able to enhance the performance of IDSs up to constant time O(1) based on the Principle Component Analysis (PCA). Furthermore, the present study offers a feature selection approach for identifying major components in real time. The PCA algorithm transforms high-dimensional feature vectors into a low-dimensional feature space, which is used to determine the optimum volume of factors. The proposed approach was assessed using HTTP packet payload of ISCX 2012 IDS and DARPA 1999 dataset. The experimental outcome demonstrated that our proposed anomaly detection achieved promising results with 97% detection rate with 1.2% false positive rate for ISCX 2012 dataset and 100% detection rate with 0.06% false positive rate for DARPA 1999 dataset. Our proposed anomaly detection also achieved comparable performance in terms of computational complexity when compared to three state-of-the-art anomaly detection systems.

  • The engineering background of this article is an ancient wooden building with extremely high historic and cultural values in Tibet. A full understanding of the dynamic behaviour of this historic building under in-service environments is the basis to assess the condition of the structure, especially its responses to earthquake, environmental and operational loading. A dynamic monitoring system has been installed in the building for over one year and the large amounts of high quality data have been obtained. The paper aims at studying the dynamic behaviour of the wooden building in seismic and operational conditions using the field monitoring data. Specifically the effects of earthquake and crowd loading on the structure's dynamic response are investigated. The monitoring data are decomposed into principal components using the Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) technique. The relationship between the average acceleration amplitude and frequencies of the principle components and operational conditions has been discussed. One main contribution is to understand the health condition of complex ancient building based on large databases collected on the field.

  • In this paper, a novel human activity recognition method is proposed which utilizes independent components of activity shape information from image sequences and Hidden Markov Model (HMM) for recognition. Activities are represented by feature vectors from Independent Component Analysis (ICA) on video images, and based on these features; recognition is achieved by trained HMMs of activities. Our recognition performance has been compared to the conventional method where Principle Component Analysis (PCA) is typically used to derive activity shape features. Our results show that superior recognition is achieved with our proposed method especially for activities (e.g., skipping) that cannot be easily recognized by the conventional method.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of identifying freshness of beef using a surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor based electronic nose. The beef was stored at 5$^{\circ}C$ and aroma was measured with the passage of time. Chromatographic analysis of the odor showed that number of volatile components and their amounts were rapidly increased after 19 days of storage. Classifying beefs according to their storage days was possible using principle component analysis (PCA). Classifying beefs processed from four different origins was also possible with PCA analysis of odor. This study shows that electronic nose can be applied to beef freshness evaluation and classification of its origin.

  • In this paper, a new first-order shear deformation beam theory based on neutral surface position is developed for bending and free vibration analysis of functionally graded beams. The proposed theory is based on assumption that the in-plane and transverse displacements consist of bending and shear components, in which the bending components do not contribute toward shear forces and, likewise, the shear components do not contribute toward bending moments. The neutral surface position for a functionally graded beam which its material properties vary in the thickness direction is determined. Based on the present new first-order shear deformation beam theory and the neutral surface concept together with Hamilton's principle, the motion equations are derived. To examine accuracy of the present formulation, several comparison studies are investigated. Furthermore, the effects of different parameters of the beam on the bending and free vibration responses of functionally graded beam are discussed.

  • In this paper, unified nonlocal shear deformation theory is proposed to study bending, buckling and free vibration of nanobeams. This theory is based on the assumption that the in-plane and transverse displacements consist of bending and shear components in which the bending components do not contribute toward shear forces and, likewise, the shear components do not contribute toward bending moments. In addition, this present model is capable of capturing both small scale effect and transverse shear deformation effects of nanobeams, and does not require shear correction factors. The equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions for the deflection, buckling load, and natural frequency are presented for a simply supported nanobeam, and the obtained results are compared with those predicted by the nonlocal Timoshenko beam theory and Reddy beam theories.

  • In this paper, bending-stretching analysis of thick functionally graded piezoelectric rectangular plates is studied using the higher-order shear and normal deformable plate theory. On the basis of this theory, Legendre polynomials are used for approximating the components of displacement field. Also, the effects of both normal and shear deformations are encountered in the theory. The governing equations are derived using the principle of virtual work and variational approach. It is assumed that plate is made of piezoelectric materials with functionally graded distribution of material properties. Hence, exponential function is used to modify mechanical and electrical properties through the thickness of the plate. Finally, the effect of material properties, electrical boundary conditions and dimensions are investigated on the static response of plate. Also, it is shown that results of the presented model are close to the three dimensional elasticity solutions.
