  • Heat transfer rate can be increased by increasing the heat transfer area. In this study, wide louver fin-and-tube heat exchangers with $P_t/P_l=1.03$ were tested and compared with louver fin-and-tube heat exchanger with $P_t/P_l=0.6$. Results show that heat transfer capacities of wide louver samples are larger (9.8% at one row, 13.6% at two row and 4.1% at three row) than those of conventional louver samples. Considering the area ratio of 1.78, the increase of heat transfer capacity is rather small, possibly due to the smaller heat transfer coefficient and fin efficiency of the wide louver sample. The j factor of the louver fin was 67% larger at one row, 42% larger at two row and 52% larger at three row. The f factor of the louver fin was 81% larger at one row, 63% larger at two row and 60% larger at three row. The effect of fin pitch on j and f factors are not pronounced and the j factor decreased as the number of tube row increased.

  • RCM is used to clarify the complex phenomena of engine combustion. In order to describe engine combustion, several significant experimental studies are considered. Prediction of the peak pressure is very important since it has a significant influence on engine combustion. In addition, peak-temperature variation can be calculated from the measured peak pressure by using the fundamental thermodynamic relation. When the RCM is in operation, heat transfer occurs through the cylinder wall. Because of this phenomenon, it is difficult to determine the peak pressure without employing the case by case experimental method. The goal of this study is to evaluate the peak pressure analytically. We conduct an experiment to confirm the relationship between the peak pressure and some parameters. Using the results of the peak pressure variation experiment, we develop a general equation that be used to calculate the peak pressure as a function of operation time and compression ratio.

  • Experimental results for the variation of the flow characteristics and heat transfer coefficients in the entrance region of concentric annular pipe with artificial roughness are compared with the theoretical results by numerical analysis. In the experiments, velocity profiles, pressure gradients and heat transfer coefficients were measured with variation of the Reynolds number for the constant ratio of pitch to height at the hydrodynamic entry region. Wall temperature of inner heated pipe with constant heat flux was measured at thermal entry region after the hydrodynamically fully developed region of flow. Experimental data agree well with numerical predictions. Both results show that turbulent flow of annular pipe with artificial roughness is fully developed thermally much faster than that of smooth pipe. Nusselt number of annular pipe with roughness is much higher than that of smooth pipe. However the ratios of Nusselt number of annular pipe with artificial roughness to that of smooth pipe does not vary with Reynolds number.

  • Experiments have been conducted to determine heat transfer characteristics for a two-dimen-sional turbulent wall attaching offset jet at different oblique angles to a flat surface. The local Nusselt number distributions were measured using liquid crystal as a temperature sensor. Wall static pressure coefficient profiles were measured at the Reynolds number Re 53200(based on the nozzle width, D) the offset ratio H/D from 2.5 to 10 and the oblique angle a from $0^{\circ}$, to $40^{\circ}$ It is observed that the maximum Nusselt number point occurs slightly upstream of time-averaged reattachment point for all oblique angles. The correlations between the maximum Nusselt number and Reynolds number offset ration and oblique angle are presented.

  • Heat transfer experiment is carried out during the performance test of the 4-cylinder 4-stroke cycle turbo-charged gasoline engine. Cycle simulation employing the measured pressure in cylinder, the cooling water temperature and flow rate and others is carried out in order to calculate the gas temperature in cylinder. In this simulation combustion process was simulated by Annand's two zone model and suction, compression, and other processes are calculated completely. From this simulation, we can obtain not only the heat transfer coefficient but also the flame speed, turbulent burning velocity, flame factor and the boiling condition of cooling passage. The results are investigated with engine speed, equivalence ratio and spark advance.

  • Sand compaction pile (SCP)-improved ground is composite soil which consists of the SCP and the surrounding soft soil. When a surcharge load is applied to composite ground, time-dependent behaviors occur in the composite soil due to consolidation according to radial flow toward the SCP. In addition, stress transfer also takes place between the SCP and the soft soil. This paper presents the numerical results of cylindrical composite ground that was conducted to investigate smear effect on consolidation behaviors of SCP-improved ground. The results showed that the smeared zone of soft clay had a significant effect on effective stress-pore water pressure response, stress transfer mechanism and stress concentration ratio of composite ground. Amount of stress transfer between the clay and the SCP was maximum in depth of z/H=0.25, and decreased with depth. Stress concentration ratio of composite ground was not constant, but depended on consolidation process. It was also found that the value of stress concentration ratio in soft clay with smeared zone was larger than that in soft clay without smeared zone.

  • In this study, the influence of the presence of discontinuity planes on the load transfer mechanism and the pattern of loosening zone was studied based on the laboratory test. The trap-door and the reaction plates are installed as the bottom plane of the model box. The vertical discontinuity plane is installed in the dry sand. Various overburden heights and locations of discontinuity planes are applied as major factors in this study. The results show that at higher overburden heights over about 1.5 times the excavation width, the ratio of the transferred stress to the insitu stress converges to a certain value even if the overburden height increases further. The results also show that the discontinuity plane gives relatively larger influence on the load transfer mechanism, that produces the unsymmetrical load concentration, when the discontinuity plane locates within the tunnel width. When the discontinuity plane locates outside the tunnel width, the unsymmetrical load concentration is reduced considerably.

  • In this study, the characteristics of the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop were numerically analyzed according to the axis ratio (AR), pitch, location of vortex generator, and bump phase of the tube surface about an elliptical fin-tube heat exchanger. The boundary condition for CFD analysis was decided as a tube surface temperature of 348 K and inlet air velocity of 1-5 m/s. RSM 7th turbulent model was chosen as the numerical analysis for the sensitivity level. The analysis results indicated that the AR and transverse pitch decreased whereas the heat transfer coefficient increased. On the other hand, there was little difference in the longitudinal pitch. Furthermore, the heat transfer rate was more favorable when the vortex generator was located in front of the tube. Also, the bump phase of the tube surface indicated that the pressure drop and heat transfer were more favorable with the circle type than with the serrated type.

  • An experimental study on convection heat transfer characteristics from a heated tube to an oscillating flow has been carried out, . This problem is of particular interest in the design of heat exchangers in Stirling cycle machines. Experimental system has been developed to measure temporal variations of temperature inside a heater tube during oscillating modes in a Stirling cycle machine. The dependence of temperature distributions and heat transfer rates on the oscillating frequency as well as the swept volume ratio and the mean pressure of a Stirling cycle machine is investigated in detail. The experimental results indicate that the measured temporal variations of temperature become nearly sinusoidal. The amplitude of temperature variation in the core of the tube is much more substantial than that near the tube wall, whereas the reverse is true for pulsating flows. It is also found that the heat transfer rate is increased significantly as the oscillating frequency or oscillating amplitude or the mean pressure in a tube is increased.
