Fire Resistance Characteristics of Firewall Structure Associated with Impact Damage Induced by Explosion

  • When a fire accident accompanied by an explosion occurs, the surrounding firewalls are affected by impact and thermal loads. Damaged firewalls due to accidental loads may not fully perform their essential function. Therefore, this paper proposes an advanced methodology for evaluating the fire resistance performance of firewalls damaged by explosions. The fragments were assumed to be scattered, and fire occurred as a vehicle exploded in a large compartment of a roll-on/roll-off (RO-RO) vessel. The impact velocity of the fragments was calculated based on the TNT equivalent mass corresponding to the explosion pressure. Damage and thermal-structural response analyses of the firewall were performed using Ansys LS-DYNA code. The fire resistance reduction was analyzed in terms of the temperature difference between fire-exposed and unexposed surfaces, temperature increase rate, and reference temperature arrival time. The degree of damage and the fire resistance performance of the firewalls varied significantly depending on impact loads. When naval ships and RO-RO vessels that carry various explosive substances are designed, it is reasonable to predict that the fire resistance performance will be degraded according to the explosion characteristics of the cargo.

  • To measure the pressure using semiconductor type pressure sensor in water or chemical solution, the sensor must be protected from the solution using proper packaging materials. stainless steel isolated type pressure sensor packaged with SUS316 can be widely used to measure the pressure in water or chemical due to its high corrosion-resistance and good performance in tensility and welding. Even if the surface of SUS316 has a plenty of nickel and chromium, the SUS316 is highly corrosive in acidic or alkaline solution. We coated parylene and adhesion promoting copper layer are 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 200nm, respectively. The parylene coated stainless steel pressure sensor showed good anti-corosive characteristics in various strong acids. The accuracy of pressure sensor wasn't varied after parylene coating with 0.5%FSO.

The Keystone Flap in Greater Trochanter Pressure Sore

  • The keystone flap is a fascia-based island flap with two conjoined V-Y flaps. Here, we report a case of successful treatment of a trochanter pressure sore patient with the traditional keystone flap. A 50-year-old male patient visited our department with a $3{\times}5cm$ pressure sore (grade III) to the left of the greater trochanter that was covered with eschar. Debridement was done and the defect size increased to $5{\times}8cm$ in an elliptical shape. Doppler ultrasound was then used to locate the inferior gluteal artery perforator near the wound. The keystone flap was designed to the medial side. The perforator based keystone island flap covered the defect without resistance. The site remained clean, and no dehiscence, infection, hematoma, or seroma developed. In general, greater trochanter pressure sores are covered with a perforator based propeller flap or fascia lata flap. However, these flaps have the risk of pedicle kinking and require a large operation site. For the first time, we successfully applied the keystone flap to treat a greater trochanter pressure sore patient. Our design was also favorable with the relaxation skin tension lines. We conclude that the keystone flap including a perforator is a reliable option to reconstruct trochanteric pressure sores.

  • Lately, cement mixed siliceous powder waterproofing coating has been used as a waterproofing material in the wet environment condition of an underground concrete structure. Underground is exposed to environmental influences such as pressure of ground water, pressure of soil. However, the quality standard for pressure (water pressure, earth pressure) is not specified in the specification of the cement mixed siliceous powder waterproofing coating. Therefore, in this study, the permeability test was carried out based on the assumption that the durability should be verified in consideration of the environmental aspects of the material in actual field. As a result of the test, the permeability was generated from the inorganic single type material, but it was caused by the sealing failure and the test error, and the permeability was not generated in most of the materials. The results of this study will be analyzed by reviewing the physical properties of the material, and the research direction will be resumed.

  • The running attitude of a planing hull is determined by the pressure distribution on the hull bottom, and it significantly affects hydrodynamic performance of the ship, i.e., resistance, maneuverability, and seakeeping ability. Therefore, it is essential to investigate pressure distribution on the hull bottom in order to improve hull design. In the present study, a novel pressure measurement system using tactile sensors was introduced for a planing hull. The test model was a 23 m-class planing hull with a hard chine. The pressure measurement showed that the pressure at the transom was lower than the atmospheric pressure, owing to flow separation at the transom.

  • This study investigated the fouling behavior of $Al_2O_3$ colloids on polyethylene microfiltration membrane. To examine the effect of operation variation on fouling, operating pressure was increased from 0.49 to 1.96 bar along with time elapses and then was reduced to 0.49 bar reversely. A hysteresis behavior was observed in the membrane permeate flux over pressure, revealing different fluxes at the same pressure according to the pressure control type, increasing and decreasing. Permeate resistance and its rate of increase was higher in the decreasing pressure cycle than in the increasing pressure cycle. At the initial period of filtration, fouling mechanism for the both cycles was governed by the cake filtration. The degree of fouling was higher in the decreasing pressure cycle compared with in the increasing pressure cycle.

  • This paper presents a preliminary study on the pressure sensing characteristics of smart nano composites made of MWCNT (multi-walled carbon nanotube) to develop a novel pressure sensor. We fabricated the composite pressure sensor by using a solution casting process. Made of carbon smart nano composites, the sensor works by means of piezoresistivity under pressure. We built a signal processing system similar to a conventional strain gage system. The sensor voltage outputs during the experiment for the pressure sensor and the resistance changes of the MWCNT as well as the epoxy based on the smart nano composite under static pressure were fairly stable and showed quite consistent responses under lab level tests. We confirmed that the response time characteristics of MWCNT nano composites with epoxy were faster than the MWCNT/EPDM sensor under static loads.

R-Curve Behavior in a Gas-Pressure Sintered Silicon Nitride (가스압 소결된 질화규소의 R-Curve 거동)

  • R-curves, fracture resistance (KR) as a function of crack extension (Δa), of a gas-pressure sintered monolithic Si3N4 were determined by controlled flaw/strength technique. Rising R-curve behavior was observed, confirming the operation of microstructural toughening process during crack growth. The R-curve parameters, k and m in the equation, KR=k(Δa)m, were determined to 30.301 and 0.1146, respectively. Microstructural observation of growing crack revealed that the bridging in the crack wake by unbroken ligament of large elongated ${\beta}$-grains was the mechanism primarily for the rising R-curve behavior.

  • In this study of stacked type film chip capacitor, the important parameters are heat-treated temperature, pressure and time. We measured the temperature dependence of dielectric properties and dissipation factor and the frequency dependence of dielectric properties, dissipation factor, ESR(Equivalent Series Resistance) and impedance in stacked type film capacitor. As a result, the best conditions of heat-treated temperature, pressure and time were proved to be 130$^{\circ}C$, 10kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 3hrs, respectively.
