  • It is known that the response of piles is affected by the shape of pile as well as soil conditions. In order to investigate the characteristics of the axial responses and bearing capacities of non-displacement tapered and cylindrical piles in sands, 12 model pile load tests using a calibration chamber were conducted on model tapered and cylindrical piles, which were specially manufactured to measure the base and shaft load capacities independently. Results of the model tests showed that the shaft load of tapered piles continuously increased with pile settlement, whereas the shaft load of cylindrical piles reached ultimate values at a settlement equal to 4% of pile diameter. Therefore, taper piles have greater shaft loads than cylindrical one at the same settlement. It is also observed that the total load capacity of tapered piles is lower than cylindrical piles for dense sand but is greater than that of cylindrical piles for medium sand. The ultimate unit base resistance of tapered piles was greater than that of cylindrical piles for lateral earth pressure ratio greater than 0.4, and the shaft resistance was greater than that of cylindrical piles irrespective of lateral earth pressure ratio.

  • Recently, various studies on flexible electronic devices have been performed. In this study, the potential of Ag nanowires was evaluated as a material to replace the ITO transparent conductive film. Ag nanomaterials were formed on the glass by a novel brush coating method and an argon plasma evaporation method based on atmospheric pressure plasma. First, the Ag solution is coated on the glass with a brush, and the remaining solvent is removed with atmospheric plasma. During this process of solvent evaporation, a sound is generated by the reaction between the atmospheric plasma and the solvent. Therefore, the remaining amount of the solvent can be confirmed. In order to observe optical properties and electrical results such as reflectance, transmittance, and absorbance according to the number of coatings of the film, the results were analyzed by coating up to 5 times. For the purpose of investigating the interaction of light with Ag nanowires, reflectance and transmittance were measured while changing the wavelength of light from 200 nm to 800 nm. In the case of absorbance, the trend of increasing light absorption of the Ag nanowires according to the coating was clearly confirmed. The electrical properties showed a great change from the time of coating more than 4 times, and in particular, the resistance value was lower than kΩ/cm2 when the coating was applied 5 times. Based on these optical and electrical results, we plan to verify the possibility of a transparent conductive film by applying it to electronic devices in the future.

  • The components in ultra super critical (USC) steam turbine, which is under development for high efficient power generation, are encountering harsher solid particle erosion by iron oxide scales than ones in the existing steam turbines. Therefore, the currently used boride coating will not be able to hold effective protection from particle erosion in USC system and should be replaced by new particle erosion resistant coatings. One of the best protective coatings developed for USC steam turbine parts was found to be vanadium-boride (V-boride) coating which has a hardness of about 3000 HV, much higher than that of boride, 1600~2000 HV. In order to evaluate particle erosion resistance of the various coatings such as V-boride, boride and Cr-carbide coatings at high temperature, particle erosion test equipments were designed and manufactured. In addition, erosion particle velocity was simulated using FLUENT software based on semi-implicity method for pressure linked equations revised (SIMPLER). Based on experimental results of this work, the vanadium-boride coating was found to be superior to others and to be a candidate coating to replace the boride coating.

  • It has been suggested that buildings designed for strong ground motions will also have improved resistance to air blast loads. As an initial attempt to quantify this behavior, the responses of a ten story steel building, designed for the 1994 building code, with lateral resistance provided by perimeter moment frames, is considered. An analytical model of the building is developed and the magnitude and distribution of blast loads on the structure are estimated using available computer software that is based on empirical methods. To obtain the relationship between pressure, time duration, and standoff distance, these programs are used to obtain an accurate model of the air blast loading. A hemispherical surface burst for various explosive weights and standoff distances is considered for generating the air blast loading and determining the structural response. Linear and nonlinear analyses are conducted for these loadings. Air blast demands on the structure are compared to current seismic guidelines. These studies present the displacement responses, story drifts, demand/capacity ratio and inelastic demands for this structure.

  • Comparative water relations of Quercus acuta and Castanopsis cuspidata var, sieboldii were analyzed to assess their resistance to drought and low temperature stresses from early November to early December, As air temperature decreased both species showed an increased content of osmotically active solute concentration per unit of dry weight (NS/DW), leading to lower osmotic potential of both species at both full turgid state $(OP_{sat})$ and turgor loss point $(OP_{tlp})$ in December than November. No major difference in the ability to adjust osmotically was noticed between the two. This finding suggests that both species must respond adaptively under water and low temperature stresses to maintain turgor pressure in winter season. In addition to osmotic adjustment, a low bulk modulus of elasticity $(E_{max})$ shown in Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii must also play an important role in turgor maintenance during winter season being apt to happen water and low temperature stresses in plants.

  • Leakage trouble on the sea water pipeline in engine room is often resulted from a localized corrosion due to severe corrosive environment caused by both high speed and high pressure of sea water flowing through the inner pipe. In addition, when the ship is in stand-by or emergency condition, underwater welding to control the leakage of sea water from a hole of its pipe is very important in an industrial safety point of view. In this study possibility of underwater welding to control leakage of sea water and corrosion property of its welding zone were investigated with the electrochemical methods by parameters of welding methods and welding electrodes when underwater welding is achieved with a such case that sea water is being leaked out with a height at 50mm from a hole of $2.5mm{\emptyset}$ of test pipe. Corrosion resistance of weld metal zone is better than the base metal and its hardness is higher than that of the base metal. However corrosion potential of weld metal zone showed a negative value than that of the base metal, therefore weld metal zone is preferentially corroded rather than the base metal by performance of galvanic cell due to difference of corrosion potential between weld metal zone and base metal. Eventually it is suggested that leakage of sea water is successfully controlled by underwater welding,

  • With the synthesis of graphene on Cu using CVD, it was tried to show the behavior of graphene growth depending on the size and orientation of Cu grain. It was found out that even under the same temperature and pressure the use of different gases influences on the diffusion rate of Cu. As compared to Ar gas, Cu grain growing bigger under $H_2$ and $CH_4$ was resulted in bigger graphene grain. Corrosion resistance was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization test in room temperature and found out that the graphene on Cu was more stable in order of 10 than pure Cu due to the chemical stability of graphene. The future work of this research will focus on the synthesis of graphene having no defects including grain boundaries, and its engineering use.

  • This study develops an optimal two-dimensional (2D) pattern from three-dimensional human scan data by considering the cycling posture and dermatome of high school male cyclists. By analyzing the body surface change in the cycling posture and considering the dermatome of the lower limbs, the optimal cutting line setting and the development of cycling tights for individual cyclists were presented to provide data that could be used in the clothing industry. We designed three cycling tights to solve the size unsuitability. 3D design 1 is a non-extension design based on the analysis of the 3D human body scan data, in which parts were connected diagonally from the front of the knee to the back of the knee. 3D design 2 removed both the front and back to reduce air resistance during cycling. 3D design 3 did not have a cutting line on the front panel because of the air resistance during cycling in the front area. We analyzed the garment pressure for 8 points of lower body and performed a subjective evaluation of the 3D designed tights and the current cycling tights. The 3D design 1 in this study was well received in the omphalion, thigh, and hip area, while 3D design 3 was well received in the omphalion, thigh, hip, and bottom bands. Therefore, the LoNE of 3D design 1 was applied to the front, and the hip cutting line of 3D design 3 was applied to the back.

  • Cavitation erosion-corrosion implies damage to materials due to the shock pressure or shock wave that results when bubbles form and collapse at a metal surface within a liquid. If the liquid is corrosive to the material, a condition typically encountered in industry, the component materials may suffer serious damage by a combination of mechanical and electrochemical attack. In this study, the mild steel(SS41) was tested by using the piezoelectric vibrator with 20kHz, 24$\mu$m to cavity generation apparatus. The damage behaviour of vibration cavitation erosion-corrosion and the environment characteristics were investigated in various solutions which are seawater, tap water and distilled water. The main results obtained are as follows; 1) The cavitation erosion-corrosion damage behaviour in the seawater increases to occur at the equal degree on the middle portion and the outside portion of specimen. The distilled water specimen, on other hand, occurs beginning on the outside portion across to the middle portion of specimen. 2) The cavitation erosion-corrosion damage in the tap water of low specific resistance more increases than that in the distilled water of high specific resistance at the initial testing time and more decreases than that in it by the CaCO sub(3) film with testing time. 3) Cavitation erosion-corrosion damage characteristic divides into four regions; incubation region, acceleration region, deceleration region and steady state region.

  • Dielectric passivation effects on the EM(electromigration) have been a great interest with recent ULSI and multilevel structure tends in thin film interconnections of a microelectronic device. SiO$_2$, PSG(phosphosilicate glass), and Si$_3$N$_4$ passivation materials effects on the EM resistance were investigated by utilizing widely used Al-1%Si thin film interconnections. A standard photolithography process was applied for the fabrication of 0.7㎛ thick 3㎛ wide, and 200㎛ ~1600㎛ long Al-1%Si EM test patterns. SiO$_2$, PSG, and Si$_3$N$_4$ dielectric passivation with the thickness of 300 nm were singly deposited onto the Al-1%Si thin film interconnections by using an APCVD(atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition) and a PECVD(plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition) in order to investigate the passivation materials effects on the EM characteristics. EM tests were performed at the direct current densities of 3.2 $\times$ 10$\^$6/∼4.5 $\times$ 10$\^$6/ A/cm$^2$ and at the temperatures of 180 $\^{C}$, 210$\^{C}$, 240$\^{C}$, and 270$\^{C}$ for measuring the activation energies(Q) and for accelerated test conditions. Activation energies were calculated from the measured MTF(mean-time-to-failure) values. The calculated activation energies for the electromigration were 0.44 eV, 0.45 eV, and 0.50 eV, and 0.66 eV for the case of nonpassivated-, Si$_3$N$_4$passivated-, PSG passivated-, and SiO$_2$ passivated Al-1%Si thin film interconnections, respectively. Thus SiO$_2$ passivation showed the best characteristics on the EM resistance followed by the order of PSG, Si$_3$N$_4$ and nonpassivation. It is believed that the passivation sequences as well as the passivation materials also influence on the EM characteristics in multilevel passivation structures.
