When a moist air is rapidly expanded in a supersonic nozzle, nonequilibrium condensation occurs at a supersaturation state. Condensation shock wave appears in the nozzle flow if the releasing latent heat due to condensation goes beyond a critical value. It has been known that self-excited oscillations of the condensation shock wave generate in an air or a steam nozzle flow with a large humidity. In the present study, the passive control technique using porous wall with a cavity underneath was applied to the condensation shock wave. The effects of the passive control on the steady and self-excited condensation shock waves were experimentally investigated by Schlieren visualization and static pressure measurements. The result shows that the present passive control is a useful technique to suppress the self-excited oscillations of condensation shock wave.

A numerical analysis of unsteady motion in solid rocket motors with a nozzle has been conducted. The numerical formulation including modified $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model treats the complete conservation equation for the gas phase and the one-dimensional equations in the radial direction for the condensed phase. A fully coupled implicit scheme based on a dual time-stepping integration algorithm has been adopted to solve the governing equations. After obtaining a steady state solution, pulse and periodic oscillations of pressure are imposed at the head-end to simulate acoustic oscillations of a travelling-wave motion in the combustion chamber. Various steady and unsteady state features in the combustion chamber of a rocket motor has been analyzed as results of numerical calculations.

A combustion instability has been one of the most serious problems in the development of combustion devices including rocket engine and gas turbine. In particular, a high-frequency combustion instability generated by resonant coupling between combustion phenomena and acoustic oscillations within thrust chamber causes severe damage to the hardware. Because it is accompanied by high amplitude pressure oscillations and excessive heat flux to the chamber wall. Therefore, combustion instability is one of the difficult problems that must be resolved in developing liquid rocket engine. This paper describes the cases of combustion instability encounted during the development of thrust chamber for KSR-III and KSLV-II.

A numerical model of the igniter for the interior ballistics has been developed by combining lumped parameter model with the theoretical equation of orifice. With the developed model of the igniter, the numerical study on characteristics of the interior ballistics has been conducted according to the igniter configuration in terms of igniter length, side hole diameter, and distribution of side holes. As results of the calculation of the pressure difference between the breech and shot base, the low-cycle oscillations have been influenced by the igniter length, while the high-cycle oscillations have been affected by the side hole diameter and the distribution of side holes.
This paper presents results from system-level modeling of a water-based reactor cavity cooling system using RELAP5-3D. The computational model is benchmarked with experimental data from a half-scale RCCS test facility at Argonne National Laboratory. The model prediction is first compared with a two-phase oscillatory baseline experimental case where mixed accuracy is obtained. The model shows reasonable prediction of mass flow rate, pressure, and temperature but significant overprediction of void fraction. The model prediction is then compared with a fault case where the inlet of the risers is gradually reduced using a throttling valve. As the valve is closed, the model is able to predict some major flow phenomena observed in the experiment such as the dampening of oscillations, the reintroduction of oscillations, as well as boiling, flashing, and geysering in the risers. However, the timeline of these events are not well captured by the model. The model is also used to investigate the evolution of flow regime in the chimney. This work highlights that the semi-empirical constitutive relations used in RELAP-3D could have a strong influence on the accuracy of the model in two-phase oscillatory flows.

The interior of open cavities exposed to a grazing flow is known to experience, strong periodic pressure, oscillations sustained for a wide range of flow velocities. In this study, an original approach was followed to develop a describing function model for the flow-excitation mechanism, governed by the shedding of discrete vortices within the shear layer over the orifice. A feedback loop analysis was performed to predict the frequency and the amplitude of the interior pressure fluctuations. Furthermore, a limit cycle stability analysis based on the extended Nyquist Stability criterion allowed the predictions of the onset and termination velocities for various modes. The analytical model was verified experimentally.

The analysis of the performance and the internal flow according to various numerical models used for the interior ballistics has been conducted. The internal flow has been mainly affected by the drag model. As results, oscillations of the pressure differences between the breech and the shot base has been reduced with a deceased drag of the propellant. The major performance of the interior ballistics has no relation to the models using Nusselt number for heat transfer coefficient. The negative pressure difference without the heat transfer of the propellant has not been shown.

The characteristics of unsteady combustion were experimentally investigated using confined premixed flames stabilized by a rearward-facing step. The unsteady combustion used in this experiment plays an important role in controlling self-excited combustion oscillations and it has usually desirable performance such as high load combustion and low pollutant emission. It is known that combustion oscillation is occurred if Rayleigh's criterion is satisfied. The pressure fluctuation and OH-emission fluctuation were measured using pressure transducer and OH optical fiber respectively and then cross-corelation and phase difference were calculated to apply Rayleigh's criterion.
The FVM(Finite Volume Method) have been used mainly for the flow analyses in the piston-cylinder. The objective of the present study is to analyze numerically the piston-driven intake flows using the FEM(Finite Element Method). The FEM algorithm used in this study is 4-step time-splitting method which requires much less execution time and computer storage than the velocity-pressure integrated method and the penalty method. And the explicit Lax-Wendroff scheme is applied to nonlinear convective term in the momentum equations to prevent checkerboard pressure oscillations. Also, the ALE(arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) method is adopted for the moving grids. The calculated results show good agreement in comparison with those by the FVM and the experimental results by the LDA.

Large-amplitude, combustion-induced oscillations are observed in most systems involving continuous flow, such as aeroengine afterburners, gas boilers and rocket motors. Strong furnace vibration is typically characterized by the presence of well developed standing waves in the furnace, generating high pressure pulsation and causing structural vibration of the furnace walls. 320MW NG boilers have been experienced high vibration frequently since reconstruction works. Excessive furnace vibration was encountered when a burner air rate is suddenly reduced during load zone changed from 270MW to 300MW. An investigation showed that the primary cause of the vibration was induced by combustion low air flow rate. This paper describes phenomenon examination on strong furnace vibration due to the change of boiler operating conditions.
