The Elastic Contact Analysis of 3D Rough Surface of Nongaussian Height Distribution (Kurtosis를 고려한 3차원 거친 표면의 탄성접촉해석)

  • Surface roughness plays a significant role in friction, wear, and lubrication in machine components. Most engineering surfaces have the nongaussian height distribution. So, in this study, contact simulations are conducted for not only gaussian surfaces but also nongaussian surfaces. Nongaussian rough surface considering the kurtosis is generated numerically And the effects of kurtosis on real contact area fraction, average gap, and mean asperity contact pressure are studied. It will be shown that the real contact area fraction and the mean asperity contact pressure are sensitive to the characteristics of surface geometry according to kurtosis.

  • Most machine element, such as gears and bearings, are operated in the mixed lubrication region. Contact between two asperities has an effect on machine life by increasing local pressure. To estimate fatigue life exactly, asperity contact should be considered as a factor of fatigue life because this happening produce friction, abrasion and make flash temperature. In this paper, asperity contact is considered as a result of film breakdown when lubricant pressure is not enough to separate two asperities. Contact pressure is calculated to asperity overlap region and added to lubricant pressure. For this model, numerical procedure is introduced and the result on surface roughness and velocity for wheel bearing is presented. Results of EHL analysis for wheel bearing show that asperity contact is occurred at the edge ofEHL conjunction where has a insufficient lubricant pressure to separate two surface.

  • When a structure is built on the ground under consolidation, the instant corresponding contact pressure which the upper structure exerts on the ground is established. But, as the consolidation of the ground proceeds, the contact pressure is changed because of the flexural rigidity of the upper structure. This varied contact pressure exerts influence on the consolidation behavior of the ground. And, this varied consolidation behavior exerts on the contact pressure in retum. This kind of interaction between the upper struture and the olwer ground under consolidation contimues till all the consolidation process in finished. So this problem cannot be defined as a linear problem. In this paper an approximation method which can analyse this non-linear interaction problem is proposed by the FEM.

  • Variation of contact pressure causes change of friction coefficient, which in turn changes stress distribution in the sheet being formed and final springback. In the present study, U-draw bending experiments were carried out under constant blank holding force(BHF) and different blank sizes, and finite element analysis was conducted with and without considering contact pressure effect on friction. When the BHF was sufficiently high, the degree of springback was different between constant blank holding pressure condition and that with varying blank holding pressure. Finite element analysis considering the influence of contact pressure effect on friction could explain the occurrence of springback.

  • This research introduces a new method to attenuate flip-over vibration generation in the flat blade windshield wiper by adjusting the contact pressure between the windshield glass and the blade. The knocking force in the flip-over action of the blade is decreased by inducing gradual tilting-over along the rubber strip of the blade. This gradual tilting-over is induced by introducing a non-uniform contact pressure distribution between the blade and windshield glass. The contact pressure distribution is adjusted by controlling the unloaded profile of the body spring in the blade using a procedure proposed in a previous study. Two blades, one blade designed to generate a uniform pressure distribution and the other designed to generate non-uniform pressure distribution, are developed using the procedure. Contact pressure distributions of the developed blades are measured using a special device and compared with the intended distributions confirming the similarities between the two groups. Vertical and lateral vibrations of the two blades are measured under realistic operating condition simulated by a wiper test rig. The vertical vibrations of the blade with non-uniform contact pressure are substantially smaller than corresponding vibrations of the blade with uniform contact pressure over the entire rubber strip.

Analysis of Contact Pressure for Material Combination in Unicompartmental Knee Implant (반치환 무릎 인공관절에서의 재료조합에 따른 접촉압력 분석)

  • In knee implants, contact pressure has a significant effect on wear. In this study, finite element analysis is performed using the knee implant model developed in the previous research. The contact pressures for a total of 10 knee implant materials combinations were analyzed using the combinations actually used in research and industry. In order to calculate the contact pressure, The load was applied when the flection angle of knee was $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$. The result of contact pressure revealed the smallest contact pressure in the titanium alloy-UHMWPE combination. In the case of UHMWPE, contact pressure did not change much with any material used in the femur. Compared the combination with the largest contact pressure and the smallest contact pressure, the difference was 0.77%. On the other hand, Carbon / PEEK composites showed 5.3% difference when the contact pressure was the largest and the smallest. It can be seen that when the Carbon / PEEK composite material is used as the bearing part, the material of the femoral part affects the wear. This study will contribute to the prediction of knee implant wear and minimization of wear.

Development of Experimental Setup for Impact Punching in Brittle Materials and Analysis of Punching Mechanism (취성재료의 펀칭가공을 위한 충격 장치 개발 및 펀칭기구 해석)

  • In order to investigate the possibility of impact punching in brittle materials, an experimental setup was developed. In the setup, a long bar as a punch was used to apply the impact load to the specimen plate and measure the applied impact force during the impact punching process. Impact punching tests with various shape of punches were performed in soda-lime glass and silicon wafer under a different level of contact pressure. The damage appearance after the impact punching was examined according to the applied contact pressure. The minimum contact pressure required for a complete punching in glass specimens without development of radial cracks around the punched hole was sought at each condition. The minimum contact pressure increased with increasing the thickness of specimens and decreasing the end radius of punches. The profile of impact forces was measured during the impact punching experiment, and it could explain well the behavior of the punching process in brittle material plates. The measured impact force increased with increasing the contact pressure applied to the plates.

Experimental consideration for contact angle and force acting on bubble under nucleate pool boiling

  • Pool boiling experiments are performed within an isolated bubble regime at inclination angles of 0° and 45°. When a bubble grows and departs from the heating surface, the pressure, buoyancy, and surface tension force play important roles. The curvature and base diameter are required to calculate the pressure force, the bubble volume is required to calculate the buoyancy force, and the contact angle and base diameter are required to calculate the surface tension force. The contact angle, base diameter, and volume of the bubbles are evaluated using images captured via a high-speed camera. The surface tension force equation proposed by Fritz is modified with the contact angles obtained in this study. When the bubble grows, the contact angle decreases slowly. However, when the bubble departs, the contact angle rapidly increases owing to necking. At an inclination angle of 0°, the contact angle is calculated as 82.88° at departure. Additionally, the advancing and receding contact angles are calculated as 70.25° and 82.28° at departure, respectively, at an inclination angle of 45°. The dynamic behaviors of bubble growth and departure are discussed with forces by pressure, buoyancy, and surface tension.

  • Heat generation in machine operating condition makes thermal deformation and thermalstress in the structure, which results in the change the contact characteristics of machine joint such s change of shrinkage fit, contact heat conductance and contact pressure. As the change of contact pressure is related to variation of static, dynamic and thermalcharacteristics, the prediction of transient contact perssure is strongly required. This paper presents some analytical results which will be effective to predict static and dynamic characteristics of the compound cylindrical structure.
