Background: An inappropriate Q angle may affect the biomechanics of the canine patellofemoral joint. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of changes in quadriceps angle (Q angle) on patellofemoral joint pressure distribution in dogs. Methods: Eight stifles were positioned at 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, and 120° of flexion in vitro, and 30% body weight was applied through the quadriceps. Patellofemoral contact pressure distribution was mapped and quantified using pressure-sensitive film. For the pressure area, mean pressure, peak pressure, medial peak pressure, and lateral peak pressure, differences between groups according to conditions for changing the Q angle were statistically compared. Results: Increases of 10° of the Q angle result in increases in the pressure area (P = 0.04), mean pressure (P = 0.003), peak pressure, and medial peak pressure (P ≤ 0.01). Increasing the Q angle by 20° increases the pressure area (P = 0.021), mean pressure (P ≤ 0.001), peak pressure (P ≤ 0.01), and medial peak pressure (P ≤ 0.01) significantly, and shows higher mean (P ≤ 0.001) and peak pressures than increasing by 10°. Decreasing the Q angle increases the mean pressure (P = 0.013), peak pressure, and lateral peak pressure (P ≤ 0.001). Conclusions: Both increases and decreases in the Q angle were associated with increased peak patellofemoral pressure, which could contribute to the overloading of the cartilage. Therefore, the abnormal Q angle should be corrected to the physiologically normal value during patellar luxation repair and overcorrection should be avoided.

In this paper, the effects of the anti-vortex hole angle and blowing ratio on the flat plate film cooling effectiveness were experimentally investigated. For the film cooling effectiveness measurement, pressure sensitive paint technique was applied. The experiments were conducted for cylindrical and anti-vortex film cooling holes, and three blowing ratios of 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 were tested. Two anti-vortex hole angles of 0 and 15 degree with respect to the flow direction were considered. For the cylindrical hole case, the film cooling effectiveness decreased as the blowing ratio increased because of the coolant lift-off. For the angle anti-vortex hole cases, however, higher blowing ratio resulted in higher film cooling effectiveness due to the reduced actual blowing ratio and diminished kidney vortex. For all blowing ratio, the angled anti-vortex hole case showed the highest film cooling effectiveness.
In this study, the strain rate effects are considered in the formulation by introducing the constitutive equation of the strain rate sensitive materials and rigid-viscoplastic finite element program is developed for axisymmtric extrusion. The effect of strain rate sensitivity on the flow characteristics and forming pressure are investigated and the experiments are carried out for extrusion with pure lead specimens. The theoretically predicted forming pressure showed reasonably good agreement with the experimental values.
The possibility to use powder consisting of fullerite microcrystallines as a device sensitive to the external axial mechanical load is considered. We suppose that the change of conductivity of fullerite microcrystalline powder as a function of external mechanical stress will be useful for the creation of nanoscale devices of sensor electronics. This new effect based on changing of intermolecular distance between fullerene molecules due to the action of external mechanical force, which can change the distance between fullerene molecules because of weak van der Waals interaction exists. The founded effect is quite linear and sensitive to external mechanical stress is better then in well-known pressure transducers is based on silicon technology.
Polyalkylsiloxane has been spotlighted in pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) application due to excellent physical properties and good biocompatibility. Thermal behaviour of polyalkylsiloxane mixtures, such as thermal stability and heat flow, were studied using TG-DTA during catalytic hydrosilation. To understand reaction kinetics of cross-linking, catalytic hydrosilation of polyalkylsiloxane was monitored using variable temperature nuclear magnetic resonance (VT-NMR) as increased temperature. The formation of cross-linking bond $Si-CH_2-CH_2-Si$ was directly observed using distortionless enhanced by polarization transfer (DEPT) technique. Successfully polyalkylsiloxane PSA samples exhibited excellent adhesion properties by cross-linking reaction.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of salt formation on the percutaneous absorption of meloxicam through hairless mouse skin from a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) matrix. In addition, the influences of enhancers on the permeation of meloxicam or meloxicam-ethanolamine (MX-EA) salts across the hairless mouse skin were evaluated using a flow-through diffusion cell system. The salt formation of meloxicam resulted in lower permeation rate than the parent drug. $Span^{(R)}$ 80 provided the highest enhancing effect for meloxicam and meloxicam monoethanolamine salt. The maximum amount of the drug that can be loaded without retarding permeation rate was different depending on the compound. No relationship was found between the fluxes of meloxicam or MX-EA salts from saturated solutions and those from PSA matrices containing the same enhancer.
The effects of various pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) and enhancers on the percutaneous absorption of tulobuterol were investigated. The permeation rate of tulobuterol through hairless mouse skin from various adhesives was evaluated using a flow-through diffusion cell system at $37^{\circ}C$. The permeability of tulobuterol was variable depending on the physicochemical property of the PSA. The permeation rate of tulobuterol from polyethylene oxide grafted acrylic adhesive matrix was higher than that from other PSA matrices. The flux of tulobuterol was $4.37{\pm}0.34\;{\mu}g/hr/cm^2$ from polyethylene oxide grafted acrylic adhesive matrix. When the effects of various enhancers on the percutaneous absorption of tulobuterol from grafted acrylic adhesive were evaluated, Plurol $oleique^{\circledR}$ showed higher flux than all other enhancers tested.
The stability and performance (peel strength) of the acrylic copolymer and various modified rosin systems were investigated. The peel strength was measured over a wide range of scaling rates, and the influence of the viscoelasticity of the PSA(pressure sensitive adhesive) was considered. In the case of miscible systems, the peak of peel strength (PSA performance) over wide peel rates was changed and modified systematically with increasing glass transition temperature of the blends. The peak of the peel strength for blended systems shifts toward the lower rate side as glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of the blend increased. The influence of esterification of the rosin on performance and stability against deterioration was greatly modified by blending with rosin of glycerol ester and rosin pentaerythritol ester. The failure mode of the blend varies with the combination with acrylic copolymer and modified rosin, and cohesive failure was found at a lower peel rate while interfacial failure was found at a high peel rate. A few systems where a single Tg could be measured, despite the fact that two phases were observed microscopically, were detected.
To prepare an acrylic type pressure-sensitive adhesive, quarternary polymers were synthesized from butyl acrylate (BA), 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate (2-EHA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), and 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA). The quarternary polymers were identified by FT-IR and Molecular weight was measured by Gel Pearmeation Chromatography. Also, viscosity, solid content and peel strength were examined. The peel strength was 160 $g_{f}/25$ mm when the volume ratio of feed monomer to solvent was 1.3:1, and the ratio was relevant to commercial usage. The pot life of adhesive was 30 sec at the 50 m/min of heat treatment rate at, and it indicated that the minimum drying time was 30 sec. In weathering resistance test, peel strength of $160{\sim}180$$g_{f}/25$ mm after 1000 h, with no residual remains on the adhesive surface.
The possibility of real time analysis about hot melt resins and pressure sensitive adhesives in newsprint stock was investigated by performing comparative tests using conventional image analysis method and real time contaminants analyzer. Based on the test results, the performance of real time contaminants analyzer in terms of detecting primary stickies in newsprint stock could be verified. Real time stickies analysis showed good precision and over-estimation of hot melt resins and under-estimation of pressure sensitive adhesives could be corrected by adapting new method. Real time analysis of primary stickies in the actual newsprint stock also showed good correlation with conventional image analysis and the performance of real time contaminants analyzer could be verified again. Adjustment of the contrast sensitivity of real time contaminants analyzer was enough to set the proper monitoring conditions for primary stickies in newsprint stock.
