The effect of heat loss on combustion performance and burning velocity of micro combustors in various conditions were exploited experimentally. Three different gases were used, and various geometric matrixes were considered to figure out the phenomena of combustion in a micro combustor. The micro combustors used in this study were constant volume combustors and had cylindrical shape. Geometric parameter of combustor was defined as combustor height and diameter. The effect of height was exploited parametrically as 1mm, 2mm and 3 mm and the effect of diameter was parameterized to be 7.5 mm and 15 mm. Three different combustibles which were Stoichiometric mixtures of methane and air, hydrogen and air, and mixture of hydrogen and air with fuel stoichiometry of two were used. By pressure measurement and visualization of flame propagation, characteristic of flame propagation was obtained. Flame propagations which were synchronized with pressure change within combustor were analyzed. From the analysis of images obtained during the flame propagations, burning velocity at each location of flame was obtained. About $7\%$ decrease in burning velocity of $CH_4/Air$ stoichiometric mixture compared with previous a empirical result was observed, and we can conclude that it is acceptable to use empirical equations for laminar premixed flame burning velocity to micro combustions. Results presented in this paper will give fine tool for analysis and prediction of combustion process within micro combustors.

The performance of a direct-injection type diesel engine often depends on the strength of swirl or squish, shape of combustion chamber, the number of nozzle holes, etc. This is of course because the combustion in the cylinder was affected by the mixture formation process. In this paper, combustion process of biodiesel fuel was studied by employing the piston which has several grooves with inclined plane on the piston crown to generate swirl during the compression stroke in the cylinder in order to improve the atomization of high viscosity fuel such as biodiesel fuel and toroidal type piston generally used in high speed diesel engine. To take a photograph of flame, single cylinder, four stroke diesel engine was remodeled into two stroke visible engine and high speed video camera was used. The results obtained are summarized as follows; (1) In the case of toroidal piston, when biodiesel fuel was supplied to plunger type injection system which has very low injection pressure as compared with common-rail injection system, the flame propagation speed was slowed and the maximum combustion pressure became lower. These phenomena became further aggravated as the fuel viscosity gets higher. (2) In the case of swirl groove piston, early stage of combustion such as rapid ignition timing and flame propagation was activated by intensifying the air flow in the cylinder. (3) Combustion process of biodiesel fuel was improved by the reason mentioned in paragraph (2) above. Consequently, the swirl grooves would also function to improve the combustion of high viscosity fuel.
Three-layer back propagation network (BPN) and genetic neural network (GNN) were developed in this study to predict the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient (HTC) in conventional and small-diameter channels. The GNN has higher precision than BPN (with root mean square errors of 17.16% and 20.50%, respectively) and other correlations. The inputs include vapor quality x, mass flux G, heat flux q, diameter D and physical parameter φ, and the predicted flow boiling HTC is set as the outputs. Influences of input parameters on the flow boiling HTC are discussed based on the trained GNN: nucleate boiling promoted by a larger saturated pressure, a larger heat flux and a smaller diameter is dominant in small channels; convective boiling improved by a larger mass flux and a larger vapor quality is more significant in conventional channels. The HTC increases with pressure both in conventional and small channels. The HTC in conventional channels rises when mass flux increases but remains almost unaffected in small channels. A larger heat flux leads to the HTC growth in small channels and an increase of HTC was observed in conventional channels at a higher vapor quality. HTC increases inversely with diameter before dry out.

Micro shock tubes are now-a-days used for a variety engineering applications such as in the field of aerospace, combustion technology and drug delivery systems. But the flow characteristics of micro shock tube will be different from that of well established conventional macro shock tube under the influence of very low Reynolds number and high Knudsen number formed due to smaller diameter. In present study, experimental studies were carried out to a closed end (downstream) Micro Shock Tube with two different diameters were investigated to understand the flow characteristics. Pressure values were measured at different locations inside the driver and driven section. The results obtained show that with the increase in diameter the shock propagation velocity increases as well as the effect of reflected shock wave will be more significant under the same diaphragm rupture pressure.
Groundwater development as a means of acquiring subsidiary water resource is very important for the persistent security of water resource. Nowadays, pneumatic fracturing technology which was developed in the advanced countries is applied for increasing pumping rate and eliminating contaminants. This study gives an experimental data to clarify permeability characteristics of the single discontinuity which is newly developed or increased in aperture by the pneumatic fracturing or damage propagation of the natural barrier for the nuclear waste disposal. On the basis of understanding the relationship between permeability and hydraulic aperture the result could apply as one of the basic data for researches concerned with increasing pumping rate and eliminating contaminants. Hydraulic aperture is decreased exponentially with increasing confining pressure and proportioned to permeability in the same confining pressure. Especially, with the increasing aperture permeability of coarse- and medium- grained granite shows the more rapid increasing than that of fine- grained granite.
The present work is concerned with the study of the influence of inhomogeneous initial stresses in a hollow cylinder containing a compressible inviscid fluid on the propagation of axisymmetric longitudinal waves propagating in this cylinder. The study is carried out using the so-called three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves in bodies with initial stresses to describe the motion of the cylinder and using the linearized Euler equations to describe the flow of the compressible inviscid fluid. It is assumed that the inhomogeneous initial stresses in the cylinder are caused by the internal pressure of the fluid. To solve the corresponding eigenvalue problem, the discrete-analytic solution method is applied and the corresponding dispersion equation is obtained, which is solved numerically, after which the corresponding dispersion curves are constructed and analyzed. To obtain these dispersion curves, parameters characterizing the magnitude of the internal pressure, the ratio of the sound velocities in the cylinder material and in the fluid, and the ratio of the material densities of the fluid and the cylinder are introduced. Based on these parameters, the influence of the inhomogeneous initial stresses in the cylinder on the dispersion of the above-mentioned waves in the considered hydro-elastic system is investigated. Moreover, based on these results, appropriate conclusions about this influence are drawn. In particular, it is found that the character of the influence depends on the wavelength. Accordingly, the inhomogeneous initial stresses before (after) a certain value of the wavelength lead to a decrease (increase) of the wave propagation velocity in the zeroth and first modes.

This study performed field and laboratory tests for poor subsoils taken in six regions of the country and determined undrain shear strength. Su values and preconsolidation pressure are predicted using Back Propagation neural network (BPNN) and the application of BPNN is verified. The result of BPNN shows that correlation coefficient between test and neural network result is over 0.9, which means high correlativity. Especially the neural network uses only 6 parameters such as natural water content, void ratio, specific gravity, rate of passing 200th sieve, liquid limits and plasticity index among various affecting factors to estimate value and the correlation coefficent is 0.93. The conclusions obtained in this paper are from the tests performed for poor subsoils taken in the several regions of the country. If there were more test results, the prediction and influence of various soil properties could be effectively performed by neural network.

A discrete element approach is used to investigate the effects of confining stress on the shear behaviour of joint's bridge area. A punch-through shear test is used to model the concrete cracks under different shear and confining stresses. Assuming a plane strain condition, special rectangular models are prepared with dimension of $75mm{\times}100mm$. Within the specimen model and near its four corners, four equally spaced vertical notches of the same depths are provided so that the central portion of the model remains intact. The lengths of notches are 35 mm. and these models are sequentially subjected to different confining pressures ranging from 2.5 to 15 MPa. The axial load is applied to the punch through the central portion of the model. This testing and models show that the failure process is mostly governed by the confining pressure. The shear strengths of the specimens are related to the fracture pattern and failure mechanism of the discontinuities. The shear behaviour of discontinuities is related to the number of induced shear bands which are increased by increasing the confining pressure while the cracks propagation lengths are decreased. The failure stress and the crack initiation stress both are increased due to confining pressure increase. As a whole, the mechanisms of brittle shear failure changes to that of the progressive failure by increasing the confining pressure.

Experiments on flame spread in an one-dimensional droplet array up to supercritical pressures of fuel droplet have been conducted In normal gravity and microgravity. Evaporating process around unburnt droplet is observed through high-speed Schlieren and direct visualizations in detail, and flame spread rate is measured using high speed chemiluminescence images of OH radical. Flame spread behaviors are categorized into three: flame spread is continuous at low pressures and is regularly intermittent up to the critical pressure of fuel. flame spread is irregularly intermittent and zig-zag at supercritical pressures of fuel. At atmospheric pressure, the limit droplet spacing and the droplet spacing of maximum flame spread rate in microgravity are larger than those in normal gravity. In microgravity, the flame spread rate with the increase of ambient pressure decreases initially, takes a minimum, and then decreases after taking maximum. This is so because the flame spread time is determined by competing effects between the increased transfer time of thermal boundary layer due to reduced flame diameter and the reduced ignition delay time in terms of the increase of ambient pressure. Consequently, it is found that flame spread behaviors in microgravity are considerably different from those in normal gravity due to the absence of natural convection.

This paper presents the fabrication of surface acoustic wave (SAW)-based pressure sensor for long-term stable mechanical compression force measurement. SAW pressure sensor has many attractive features for practical pressure measurement: no battery requirement, wireless pressure detection especially at hazardous environments, and easy other functionality integrations such as temperature, humidity, and RFID. A $41^{\circ}$ YX $LiNbO_3$ piezoelectric substrate was used because of its high SAW propagation velocity and large values of electromechanical coupling factors $K^2$. A silicon substrate with $\~200{\mu}m$ deep cavity was bonded to the diaphragm with epoxy, in which gold was covered all over the inner cavity in order to confine electromagnetic energy inside the sensor, and provide good isolation of the device from its environment. The reflection coefficient $S_{11}$ was measured using network analyzer. High S/N ratio, sharp reflected peaks, and clear separation between the peaks were observed. As a mechanical compression force was applied to the diaphragm from top with extremely sharp object, the diaphragm was bended, resulting in the phase shifts of the reflected peaks. The phase shifts were modulated depending on the amount of applied mechanical compression force. The measured $S_{11}$ results showed a good agreement with simulated results obtained from equivalent admittance circuit modeling.
