Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the use of dentifrice for children, the state of dentifrice for children on the market and the relationship between the bore of dentifrice and the amount of dentifrice used in an effort to provide parents, main consumers of dentifrice for children, with the right information on dentifrice. Methods : Data on the use of children's dentifrice were gathered by investigating parents in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province in July and August, 2009. The selected parents had children aged one to five in Western age. Results : 1. As to the purchase of dentifrice for children, the largest group (75.9%) were aware of the name of the toothbrush used by their children, and the greatest group (97.3%) bought the toothbrush on behalf of them. Advertising was the most dominant source of information on the choice of dentifrice (51.8%), and non-professionals were the most common providers of information on that (55.9%). 2. The amount of dentifrice used at a time was a mean of $0.467{\pm}0.270g$. There was a wide disparity in that aspect from a low of 0.100 to 1.900g. As to the influence of the size of the bore of dentifrice, the greatest amount of dentifrice was used ($0.670{\pm}0.306g$) when the bore of dentifrice was 9 mm in size, and the bore size 9 mm was significantly different from the size 3 mm and 6 mm in that aspect (p<0.001). 3. There was one kind of imported dentifrice for children on the market. Concerning the fluoride ingredient of dentifrice, the biggest number of dentifrice contained MFP only. As to the size of the bore of dentifrice, there was a difference of 3 to 9 mm. Most of dentifrice for children included the pictures of particular characters. Conclusions : The above-mentioned findings illustrated that there is a serious concern for the intake of fluoride among infants and preschoolers, it's needed to pay careful attention to the use of dentifrice. Dentifrice for children should be manufactured in consideration of the relationship between the size of the bore and the amount of dentifrice used.
The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a Children's Play Disposition Scale(CPDS) which could be used to evaluate children's play patterns and preferences. The participants of this study were parents of 437 5-7-year-old children (age range from 51months to 106months). Preliminary items were developed through a review of relevant research, multiple intelligence theory and scales, confirmation of item adequacy and content validity. After the content validity was confirmed by experts, these items were edited down to a final list of 27 items representing 6 factors identified by exploratory factor analysis. The 6 factors of the scale consists of initiative, linguistic activity, logical-mathematical activity, art and craft, physical activity, and sensitivity respectively. Concurrent validity was established by using correlations between each factor of the CPDS and sub-factors and the total scores of Multiple Intelligence Checklist for preschoolers (Multiple Intelligence Institute Co., Ltd, 2008) and Multiple Intelligence Checklist for elementary schoolers (Multiple Intelligence Institute Co., Ltd, 2007). In addition, the reliability of each factor, as measured by Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, ranged from .53 to .79. The CPDS provides the developmental and educational information for strengthening children's developmental forte and for supporting children's developmental weakness. This scale can be used on developing children's play contents and guiding play methods in the future.

This study investigated the effects of preschool teachers' ethical awareness and teaching flow on the teacher-preschooler interaction based on the participation of 345 preschool teachers in Chungcheongnam-do and Gyeonggi-do. The collected data were analyzed by correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis. The results of the study were as follows: First, both teachers' ethical awareness and teaching flow were strongly correlated with the teacher-preschooler interaction, and the correlation between sub-variables was also significant. Second, analysis of the relative strength of teachers' ethical awareness and teaching flow in the explanation of the teacher-preschooler interaction revealed that intrinsic motivation as a sub-variable among teaching flow was the most prominent predictor of the teacher-preschooler interaction, followed by ethics for preschoolers among teachers' ethical awareness as well as specific plans among teaching flow. The findings of this study suggest future directions for teacher education based on newly identified factors affecting teacher-preschooler interactions, desirable teacher-preschooler interactions, and implications for improving childcare quality.

Purpose: This study was to know the correlation among the dimensions of ocular components and refractive error on kindergarten children. Methods: The subjects were 80 preschool students who had no eye diseases. The refraction, corneal diopter, corneal radius, inter-pupillary distance, axial length, anterior chamber depth and dominant eye were measured and analysed. Results: It was shown that the highest correlation was between the axial length and the corneal diopter (r=-0.674, p=0.000). The ratio of height, weight and axial length (AL) to Corneal radius (CR) ratio were positively correlated with the axial length (r=0.351, r=0.408, r=0.488). The spherical equivalent of the refractive error and the corneal diopter were negatively correlated with the axial length (r=-0.302, r=-0.674). The anterior chamber depth and the corneal diopter were positively correlated with the AL/CR ratio (r=0.422, r=0.280). The spherical equivalent of the refractive error and the corneal radius were negatively correlated with the AL/CR ratio. Conclusions: It was shown that the AL/CR ratio was a very important indicator for diagnosing the refractive error of the preschoolers.
The purpose of this study is to explore the selection attributes for parents of children with language disability when choosing a clinic. The data collection was carried out in 3 steps: the preliminary survey, first open survey and second survey in AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process). The subjects of were 252 in total. The results were as follows: First, The order of priority attributes in superior categories for parents of children with language disability when selecting a clinic were 'therapist-related attributes', 'program-related attributes' and 'physical-related attributes' in turn. The top 5 priority attributes in subcategories were 'therapist's academic background and major', 'ability to make a rapport', 'clinical experience and qualification of therapist', 'kindness and confidence' and 'counseling program for parents'. Second, The parents of preschoolers age 6 and younger chose 'clinical experience and qualification of therapist', 'counseling program for parents' and 'learning materials' for the most priority attributes, whereas the parents of students age from 7 to 12, considered 'therapist's academic background and major', 'clinical fee' and 'distance transport parking' more importantly to select a clinic. The results of this study provided preliminary data for successful planning of speech and language therapy.
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is prevalent in preschoolers and schoolchildren. The utilization of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is increasing in patients with AD as well as the general population. This study is based on the utilization of CAM for children with AD. Subjects were children suffering from AD who participated in the project of 'Seoul Atopy Asthma Free School'. In 6,800, the number of subject available data to final analysis was 4,985 for children with AD. Independent variables were age, monthly income of households, sleep disturbance, and dependent variables were medical treatment (MT), oriental medicine clinic (OMC), home remedy (HR) use experience during the past 12 months. As a result, MT was 76.5%, OMC was 24.6%, and HR was 62.3%, while multiple treatment from OMC and HR was 34.2%, and MT with OMC and HR was 18.8%. And variables influenced on CAM were age, monthly income of households, and sleep disturbance. However, some parents, tended to recognize that home remedy was effective and safe than other treatments. Therefore, it is recommended to counsel with physician about the merits and demerits of CAM.
The aim of this study was to examine how children's self control, mother's addiction to smart devices and parenting behavior influence the way young children used smart devices. Participants were made up of 166 preschoolers and their mothers. Descriptive analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical regression analysis were used for statistical analysis. The results were as follows: First, children in their early childhood years used smart devices once or twice a week, for ten to thirty minutes, mainly during weekends. Children in their early childhood stage started to use smart devices before reaching the age of 3, and accessed them through their parents, usually along with their siblings. Parents allowed their children to use smart devices for fun and entertainment, with only 66.3% of them setting rules. Second, the mother's tendency to be immersed in smart devices, overprotection and permission were positively correlated to young children's overusage of smart devices, whereas geniality, encouragement, setting limits, and children's self control were negatively correlated. The study also found that the mother's tendency of being immersed in smart devices was the most influential factor for their children's overusage of smart devices. The value of this study lies in providing practical suggestions for children's smart device usage and parental education programs.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide a critical assessment of evidence-based Korean pediatric research that can inform clinical practicability of, and future research on distraction interventions for pediatric procedural pain management. Methods: A critical review of evidence-based Korean pediatric research was conducted. Databases were searched to identify research that included an evaluation of a distraction intervention as an intervention for pediatric procedural pain management. The search yielded 68 studies. Results: From these studies, 14 were included for this review and all were recently published (2003-2014). Quasi experimental designs were most frequently used (n=12) and for 71.4% the focus was preschoolers. Audiovisual techniques were the most common form of distraction. In most studies clinical utility of the distraction intervention was not examined. Fairly consistent reductions in behavioral measures of pain in association with the distraction intervention were found but less consistent results were found for physiological measures. Conclusion: Lack of methodological rigor limits the evidence for distraction interventions to reduce pain and fear experienced by children during painful procedures. Further research to analyze the cost and time-effectiveness and to identify consumer and provider satisfaction with distraction interventions is needed to determine whether distraction interventions are clinically relevant.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate how undressing skill training based on Neuro-developmental treatment (NDT) approach effected on the midline orientation and protective reaction of children with cerebral palsy (CP). Methods : Two participants of this study were 3 years 5 months old boy and 4 years 5 months old girl, living in B city. They were medically diagnosed as cerebral palsy. Research design used in this study is AB design for a single subject research. There was no intervention on the baseline A phases, and functional activity based NDT was used undressing skill training during the B phases. Midline orientation was tested by Stepping subtest in MAP. Protective reaction was measured by Protective reaction subtest in QUEST. Results : In comparison with the baseline (A), midline orientation was improved above 2 standard deviations at intervention phase (B). and protective reaction was improved above averages in both hands. Conclusion : The study showed undressing skill training based on NDT approach that were effective for midline orientation of children with CP. Undressing skill training was one of the major functional activities. Thus, large studies are required to ensure the training effects.
The objective of this study was to examine the effects of mother's perfectionism and parenting beliefs on her preschooler's social competence. The participants were 277 mothers residing in Daejeon, Korea. Basic descriptive statistics, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression were used for statistical treatment. The results were as follows: First, a mother's perfectionism and parenting beliefs did not differ according to her educational level. One factor of perfectionism, 'holding high standards', alone showed significant difference between highschool graduates and graduate school graduates, the latter's scores being higher than the former's. There were no significant differences in preschooler's social competence by sex or age. However, a few sex and age differences were found in sub-factors of social competence. Girls scored higher than boys on 'showing affection', and 5 year olds scored lower on 'showing affection' and higher on 'leadership' than 3 years olds. Second, a mother's perfectionism and parenting beliefs were able to explain 22.8% of variance in preschooler's social competence, the former showing more predictive power than the latter. Each of the two factors of maternal perfectionism affected five factors of preschooler's social competence in a different manner. 'Holding high standards' of perfectionism positively influenced preschooler's social competence factors such as 'social capability', 'leadership', and 'showing affection', whereas maternal 'fear of failure' had a negative impact on 'showing affection', 'disturbing'(reversed), and 'instability'(reversed). These results were discussed in relation with changes in social atmosphere and value systems, changes in child-rearing behaviors, or the construct and concept of perfectionism itself, It was suggested that these results be utilized in developing parent education programs for preschoolers lacking social competence.
