The soot yield has been studied by a premixed propane-oxygen-inert gas combustion in a specially designed disk-type constant-volume combustion chamber to investigate the effect of pressure, temperature and turbulence on soot formation. Premixtures are simultaneously ignited by eight spark plugs located on the circumference of chamber at 45 degrees intervals in order to observe the soot formation under high temperature and high pressure. The eight converged flames compress the end gases to a high pressure. The laser schlieren and direct flame photographs with observation area of 10 mm in diameter are taken to examine the behaviors of flame front and gas flow in laminar and turbulent combustion. The soot volume fraction in the chamber center during the final stage of combustion at the highest pressure is measured by the in-situ laser extinction technique and simultaneously the corresponding burnt gas temperature by the two-color pyrometry method. The changes of pressure and temperature during soot formation are controlled by varying the initial charging pressure and the volume fraction of inert gas compositions, respectively. It is found that the soot yield increases with dropping the temperature and raising the pressure at a constant equivalence ratio, and the soot yield in turbulent combustion decreases as compared with that in laminar combustion because the burnt gas temperature increases with the drop of heat loss for laminar combustion.
This study has numerically investigated the flame-acoustics interactions in the turbulent partially premixed flame field. In the present approach, in order to analyze the combustion instability, the present approach has employed the LES-based combustion model as well as the Helmholtz solver. Computations are made for the validation case of the partially premixed LIMOUSINE burner. In terms of the FFT data, numerical results are compared with experimental data. Moreover, Helmholtz equation in frequency domain is solved by combining CFD field data including the flight time from a nozzle to the flame zone. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the essential features of the combustion instability encountered in the partially premixed burner.

Large eddy simulation of turbulent premixed flame stabilized by the bluff body is performed by using sub-grid scale combustion model based on the G-equation describing the flame front propagation. The basic idea of LES modeling is to evaluate the filtered-front speed, which should be enhanced in the grid scale by the scale fluctuations. The dynamic subgrid scale models newly introduced into the G-equation are validated by the premixed combustion flow behind the triangle flame holder. The calculated results can predict the velocity and temperature of the combustion flow in good agreement with the experiment data.

In this investigation, turbulent premixed combustion and flame front propagation in a gas turbine combustion chamber is studied. Direct numerical simulation of turbulent reacting flows demands extremely high computational resources, especially in more complicated geometry. The alternative choice may be left for Large Eddy Simulation (LES) by which only large scales are solved directly. In combustion problems, capturing the large scales' behavior without solving the details of small scales is a difficult task. Using a transport equation for description of the flame front propagation and therefore avoiding the calculation of inner flame structure is the basic idea of this study. For this purpose. the so-called G-equation has been used by which any iso-level of the G variable provides the flame location. A comparison with the experiment indicates that the present method can predict a turbulent velocity field and also capture a instantaneous 3-dimensional flame structure.

A turbulent premixed flames of layer formed between burned hot gas and unburned mixture were investigated by means of schlieren photograph with fluctuations of temperature and ion current. The combustion intensity between burned hot gas and shear layer was higher than the intensity between unburned mixture and shear layer. A wrinkled laminar flame and flamelet were appeared at downstream to exist and distributed reaction zone was at upstream as a result of analyzed probability density functions of temperature fluctuation. The initial combustion intensity of reaction zone of eddy between burned hot gas and shear layer was higher than that of final, flowing downstream, and vice versa between unburned mixture and shear layer.
Analytical investigation of acoustic wave scattering from turbulent premixed flames was conducted to evaluate the acoustic energy amplification/damping. Such acoustic energy change is attributed to the acoustic velocity jump due to flame's heat release. Small perturbation method up to second order and stochastic analysis were utilized to formulate net acoustic energy and the energy transfer from coherent to incoherent energy. Randomly wrinkled flame surface is responsible for the energy transfer from coherent to incoherent field. Nondimensional parameters that govern net acoustic energy were determined: rms height and correlation length of flame front, incident wave frequency, incidence angle, and temperature ratio. The dependence of net acoustic energy upon these parameters is illustrated by numerical simulations in case of Gaussian statistics of flame front. Total net energy was amplified and the major factors that affect such energy amplification are incidence angle and temperature ratio. Coherent (incoherent) energy is damped (amplified) with rms height and correlation length of flame front.
Large-scale fuel tanks emit massive amount of hardly-combustible VOC mixtures which are light hydrocarbon species in dilution with nitrogen and carbon dioxide. We have developed a lab-scale burner to combust those VOC mixtures by use of a turbulent partially-premixed flame as a pilot flame. For a higher HC treatment ratio, the mixture gases were reformed by a rotating arc plasma device. The results showed that the nitrogen mole fraction and the injecting speed of the VOC mixture influence on the performance of the burner. It was also found that the size of the pilot flame and the power supplied to the plasma device determine the overall HC treatment ratio and the concentrations of CO and NOx in the exhaust gas.
This study has numerically modelled the combustion processes of the turbulent swirling premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner (LSB). In these turbulent swirling premixed flames, the four tangentially- injected air jets induce the turbulent swirling flow which plays the crucial role to stabilize the turbulent lifted flame. In the present approach, the turbulence-chemistry interaction is represented by the level-set based flame let model. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional computations are made for the various swirl numbers and nozzle length. In terms of the centerline velocity profiles and flame liftoff heights, numerical results are compared with experimental data The three-dimensional approach yields the much better conformity with agreements with measurements without any analytic assumptions on the inlet swirl profiles, compared to the two-dimensional approach. Numerical clearly results indicate that the present level-set based flamelet approach has realistically simulated the structure and stabilization mechanism of the turbulent swirling stoichiometric and lean-premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner.
Zone conditional formulation for the Reynolds average reaction progress variable is used to derive an asymptotic expression for turbulent burning velocity. New DNS runs are performed for validation in a statistically one dimensional steady state configuration. Parametric study is performed with respect to turbulent intensity, integral length scale, density ratio and laminar flame speed. Results show good agreement between DNS results and the asymptotic expression in terms of measured maximum flame surface density and estimated turbulent diffusivity in unburned gas.
Usually, we use the flame thickness and turbulence scale to classify the flame structure on a phase diagram of turbulent combustion. The flame structure in turbulence is still in debate, and many studies have been done. Since the flame motion is rapid and its reaction zone thickness is very thin, it is difficult to estimate the flame thickness. Here, we propose a new approach to determine the reaction zone thickness based on ion current signals obtained by an electrostatic probe, which has enough time and space resolution to detect flame fluctuation. Since the signal depends on the flow condition and flame curvature, it may be difficult to analyze directly these signals and examine the flame characteristics. However, ion concentration is high only in the region where hydrocarbon-oxygen reactions occur, and we can specify the reaction zone. Based on the reaction zone existing, we estimate the reaction zone thickness. We obtain the thickness of flames both in the cyclone-jet combustor and on a Bunsen burner, compared with theoretically predicted value, the Zeldovich thickness. Results show that the experimentally obtained thickness is almost the same as the Zeldovich thickness. It is concluded that this approach can be used to obtain the local flame structure for modeling turbulent combustion.
