  • Three phase squirrel cage induction motor is generally adopted as a traction motor to drive high speed trains because of its robustness for surrounding environment and easy maintenance. In the design of traction molar, reduction of weight is very important in order to reduce kinetic energy to accelerate the vehicle. Therefore, in this paper, design variables of a preliminary designed traction motor to minimize its weight is determined using the optimization technique. Before the optimization process, rotor slot number is determined to reduce vibration and noise by the analysis of magnetic force. As a result, a design example to reduce weight by 12% than that of the preliminary designed motor is presented.

  • For several decades, Asian nations such as Korea, Japan and China have been leading the shipbuilding industry since the decline in Europe and America. However, several developing countries such as India, Brazil, etc. are going to make an entrance into the shipbuilding industry. These developing countries are finding technical partners or information providers because they are in situation of little experiences and technologies. Now, the shipbuilding engineering companies of shipbuilding advanced countries are getting a chance of engineering business against those developing countries. The starting point of this business model is green field project for the construction of new shipyard. This business model is started with a design of the shipyard layout. For the conducting of the shipyard layout design, four kinds of engineering parts are required. Those are civil engineering, building engineering, utility engineering and production layout engineering. Among these parts, production layout engineering is most important because its result is the foundation of the other engineering parts and it determines the shipyard capacity during the shipyard operation lifecycle. Previous researches about the shipyard layout design are out of the range from the business requirements because most research cases are in the tower of ivory, which means that there are little consideration of real ship and shipbuilding operation. In this paper, a shipyard layout design for preliminary phase is conducted for the target of newly planned shipyard at Venezuela of South America with an integrated method that is capable of dealing with actual master data from the shipyard. The layout design method of this paper is differentiated from the previous researches in that the actual product data from the target ship and the actual shipbuilding operation data are used for the required area estimation.

  • Fennovoima's nuclear power plant, Hanhikivi 1, $Pyh{\ddot{a}}joki$, Finland, is currently in design phase, and its construction is scheduled to begin in 2018 and electricity production in 2024. The objective of this paper is to produce a preliminary list of safety-significant external event combinations including preliminary probability estimates, to be used in the probabilistic risk assessment of Hanhikivi 1 plant. Starting from the list of relevant single events, the relevant event combinations are identified based on seasonal variation, preconditions related to different events, and dependencies (fundamental and cascade type) between events. Using this method yields 30 relevant event combinations of two events for the Hanhikivi site. The preliminary probability of each combination is evaluated, and event combinations with extremely low probability are excluded from further analysis. Event combinations of three or more events are identified by adding possible events to the remaining combinations of two events. Finally, 10 relevant combinations of two events and three relevant combinations of three events remain. The results shall be considered preliminary and will be updated after evaluating more detailed effects of different events on plant safety.

  • Incheon bridge project is to construct total 12km long bridges on the sea consist of 800m span length cable stayed bridge, approach bridge and viaduct bridge based on LRFD design specification. To design pile foundations by RCD of each bridge unit, total 4 number of preliminary full scale pile load tests with Osterberg cell method were carried out on the piles for testing. The test load was planned to more than the expected design ultimate capacity and about 29,000tons maximum load was recorded. From the interpretation of test results, design parameters are evaluated and applied to the design. Preliminary pile load test plan and detailed execution of pile load tests are introduced and summarized. The resistance factors are presented for pile design of Incheon Bridge Project in LRFD considering variation of ground conditions and number of test piles.

  • The design concept of a Small High-flux Multipurpose LBE(Lead Bismuth Eutectic) cooled Fast Reactor (SHMLFR) was proposed in the paper. The primary cooling system of the reactor is forced circulation, and the fuel element form is arc-plate loaded high enrichment MOX fuel. The core is cylindrical with a flux trap set in the center of the core, which can be used as an irradiation channel. According to the requirements of the core physical design, a series of physical design criteria and constraints were given, and the steady and transient parameters of the reactor were calculated and analyzed. Regarding the thermal and hydraulic phenomena of the reactor, a simplified model was used to conduct a preliminary analysis of the fuel plates at special positions, and the temperature field distribution of the fuel plate with the highest power density under different coolant flow rates was simulated. The results show that the various parameters of SHMLFR meet the requirements and design criteria of the physical design of the core and the thermal design of the reactor. This implies that the conceptual design of SHMLFR is feasible.

  • The turbine is an important component and has a significant impact on the thermodynamic efficiency of the organic Rankine cycle. A precise preliminary design is essential to developing efficient turbines. In addition, performance analysis and structural analysis are needed to evaluate the performance and structural safety. However, there are only a few exclusive studies on the development process of the radial inflow turbines for the organic Rankine cycle (ORC). In this study, a preliminary design of the ORC radial inflow turbine was performed. Subsequently, the performance and structural analysis were also carried out. The RTDM, which was developed as an in-house code, was used in the preliminary design process. The results of the performance analysis were found to be in good agreement with target performances. Structural analysis of the designed turbine was also carried out in order to determine whether the material selection for this study is suitable for the flow conditions of the designed turbine, and it was found that the selected aluminum alloy is suitable for the designed turbine. However, the reliability of the preliminary design algorithms and numerical methods should be strictly verified by an actual experimental test.

  • In this study, a preliminary design code was developed for the initiation of HTPB/LOX hybrid rocket system. HTPB was assumed to have a constant regression rate. And initial input parameters; number of port, initial O/F ratio F/W ratio, and chamber pressure, were varied to analyze the effects on the performance and geometry of rocket system. The results showed a qualitatively good agreement with previous data. And it was revealed that there exists a number of design results that meet the mission requirements and that we could find an optimal design case if a proper constraint would be imposed. Thus, it is natural to account for the optimal algorithm during the design procedure and to consider more realistic and reliable formulations used for weight estimation of structural supports and accessories.

  • This paper deals with the preliminary design conditions of Stirling Engines based on an adiabatic analysis with regenerator effectiveness. The investigation of thermal regeneration process results that the definition of effectiveness proposed by Urieli et al. is appropriate for the present model. Then, it is applied to the already existing approximate analytic solution for the adiabatic model in order to optimize thermal efficiency as well as work parameter. Results show that thermal efficiency is less sensitive to the variation in design parameters than work. Phase angle for the maximum work is also the most efficient at high values of the effectiveness. Swept volume ratio should be chosen with care. The optimum value of dead volume ratio is at least less than the maximum efficiency condition. The feasible design range in compression ratio lies between the maximum efficiency condition and the structural limit of Stilring Engines, where the higher its value, the better. Changes in the temperature ratio do not alter the design conditions. Working fluids with the specific heat ratio 1.67 are more efficient that those with 1.4.

  • In this study is if the design of outlet conduit was appropriate or not by analyzing flow characteristic of outlet conduit with performing hydraulic model experiments. As the results of hydraulic model experiments, the capacity of outlet conduit of elementary design was under estimated, and the designed values of the capacity of outlet conduit of preliminary design based on the values of elementary design was nearly equal to the values of experiments, so the propriety of design was identified. In addition, as the results of examinations of negative pressure of outlet conduit, and propriety of longitudinal sections, the resulting values were within the maximum permissible limits, so it was proved that the design was appropriate. In the base of such processes, the propriety of scale and location of outlet conduit of preliminary design was examined.
