In this paper, a tile projector was developed for the control of low-frequency underwater echoes. The projector was designed to cover a wide area such as the hull of a submarine, and to have a relatively thin thickness. As a preliminary work for active echo control, the performance of the projector was measured in an anechoic water tank. The transmitting voltage response as well as the passive echo reduction were measured to evaluate the performance as an underwater projector.

Recently, the ground motion occurred by vehicles or trains has been recognized one of the major factors of damage of structures nearly the motion source. To isolate the environments from ground motions, it is necessary to understand the wave propagation in half spaces. Especially, Rayleigh wave is the primary concern because it transmits a major portion of the total source energy and decays the energy more slowly with response to distance than the other waves. In this study, the preliminary data(wave length and damping effect) to design the isolating system are obtained. For this, a field dynamic test is performed, using the exciter which can generate the 100kN vertical cyclic load in the range of 1-60 Hz is used. The fifteen accelerometers to measure the ground response are set up in 3 radial direction at intervals of 10 meters in each row. The wave lengths are calculated using the distance and the phase between the measuring points. The damping effects of the Rayleigh-wave are also observed from the experiments.
Exact solution on the anti-symmetric response of ships having uniform sectional properties in waves is derived. Boundary value problem consisted of Timoshenko beam equation and free-free end condition is solved analytically. The responses are assumed as linear and wave loads are calculated by using strip method. Horizontal bending moment, shear force and torsional moment are calculated. The developed analysis model is used for the benchmark test of the numerical codes in this problem. Also the application on the preliminary design of barge-like ships and VLFS (Very Large Floating Structure) is expected
This paper is intended to improve efficiency of two-phase BLDC motor using analytical and statistical methods, and then the stability of the starting for the designed model is investigated. The characteristics of the motor according to magnetization directions of permanent magnet are analyzed through the analytical method, and design variables that affect the efficiency are selected. Preliminary optimal design is performed using the analytical method with the design variable. The RSM (Response Surface Method) based on the FEA (Finite Element Analysis) is applied to complement errors of the analytical method. As a result, the optimal design is determined. Finally, the stability of the starting for the optimal designed model is evaluated by analyzing cogging torque, and it is verified through the FEA.
We report on some of the preliminary results of the physiological responses resulting from vehicular speed changes. Healthy human subjects (n=5) were studied for the experiments. We measured the physiological responses of the subjects such as Heart Rate Variability (HRV), Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), and skin temperature for day and night vehicular speed change experiments, respectively. Before and after the tasks, we carried out a self-report for acquiring correlation with experiment results. Mean heart rate variability (HRV) and amplitude of GSR and skin temperature were calculated for 3 minutes duration in each state. The analysis of the physiological measures of ANS activity revealed that vehicle speed change-based affective state evoked arousal response pattern featured by HR acceleration, decrease of skin temperature, and increase of GSR amplitude. The obtained results show that despite some differences observed between each state, overall physiological responses show that the activity of the sympathetic nervous system increases as a result of the increase of speed.
The visible threshold of Oreochromis niloticus responded to high light intensity under short wavelengths, whereas the response to low light intensity under long wavelengths was low, with a minimum visual threshold of 574 nm of LED lights. Movement distance of O. niloticus was dropped at 31℃ and increased abnormally at 37℃ under natural light. Comparing movement distance under red (622 nm) and green (518 nm) lights of LED, movement distance and swimming speed under red and green lights were higher than under natural light. However, the movement distance decreased rapidly at 31℃ under red light and lowest at 33℃ under green light. After that, there was a tendency to adapt to high water temperatures gradually. Consequently, red and green lights may be recommended for O. niloticus's aquaculture because the red and green lights have a positive effect on growth performance, survival rate, and metabolism, as shown in previous studies. It is necessary to control the water temperature below 32℃ because abnormal behavior above 32℃ revealed under red and green LED lights and natural light.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of auditory cues in the form of a metronome on gait initiation (GI) in Parkinson's disease (PD). 2 patients (mean age: 54 yrs) with idiopathic PD participated in the study. All patients (Hoehn and Yahr disability score of 2.0) were tested in the "on" state approximately 1.5 hours following the administration and fully responding to their PD medications. Subjects first initiated walking at self-initiated speeds to determine their cadences. Then, subjects were asked to initiate gait along the walkway while keeping pace with a metronome. The metronome rate (in beats/min) was set at a cadence 85% (slow condition), 100% (normal condition) and 115% (fast condition) of gait for each subject. Subjects were able to increase the speed of GI with faster cadence, but the speed of GI for the slow condition was similar to that of the normal condition. Swing toe-off was 578.3 ms for the fast condition, 709.4 ms for the normal condition and 736.2 ms for the slow condition. Respective times for swing heel-strike were 894.3 ms, 1110.2 ms and 1119.1 ms, and stance toe-off were 1105.4 ms, 1338.5 ms, and 1343.1 ms. Except for stance unloading ground reaction forces were greatest for the fast condition and smallest for the slow condition. It appears that PD patients were able to modulate GRFs and temporal events in response to auditory cues to achieve the peak acceleration force of the swing and stance limb. The findings from this study provided preliminary data, which could be used to investigate how PD patients modulate GRFs and temporal events during GI in response to tasks.
An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the dynamic behavior of a free-standing frame equipped with a movable base system using cast iron and mortar as the bearing materials. The preliminary friction test indicated that a graphite layer developed on the interface and exhibited stable friction behavior. The friction coefficient ranged from 0.33 to 0.36 when the applied normal compression stress ranged from 2.6 to 5.2 MPa. The effect of the variation of normal compression stress would be small. Shaking table tests on the free-standing frame showed that rock, slide, and rock-slide responses occurred. The cumulative slide distance reached 381 mm under JMA Kobe wave excitation; however, only a few cyclic slides occurred at the same locations along the moving track. Most surfaces sustained single slides. Similar results can be observed in other shaking conditions. The insufficient cyclic sliding and significant rocking resulted in a few graphite layers on the mortar surfaces. Friction coefficients were generally similar to those obtained in the preliminary friction tests; however, the values fluctuated when the rocking became significant. The collisions due to rocking caused strong horizontal acceleration responses and resulted in high friction coefficient. In addition, the strong horizontal acceleration responses caused by the collisions made the freestanding specimen unable to reduce the input horizontal acceleration notably, even when slippage occurred. Compared with the counterpart fixed-base specimen, the specimen equipped with the iron-mortar base could reduce the horizontal acceleration amplification response and the structural deformation, whereas the vertical acceleration response was doubled due to collisions from rocking.
