Nanostructures of ZnO, such as nanowires, nanorods, nanorings, and nanobelts have been actively studied and applied in electronic or optical devices owing to the increased surface to volume ratio and quantum confinement that they provide. ZnO seed layer (about 40 nm thick) was deposited on Si(100) substrate by RF magnetron sputtering with power of 60 W for 5 min. ZnO nanorods were grown on ZnO seed layer/Si(100) substrate at $95^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr by hydrothermal method with concentrations of $Zn(NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$ [ZNH] and $(CH_2)_6N_4$ [HMT] precursors ranging from 0.02M to 0.1M. We observed the microstructure, crystal structure, and photoluminescence of the nanorods. The ZnO nanorods grew with hexahedron shape to the c-axis at (002), and increased their diameter and length with the increase of precursor concentration. In 0.06 M and 0.08 M precursors, the mean aspect ratio values of ZnO nanorods were 6.8 and 6.5; also, ZnO nanorods had good crystal quality. Near band edge emission (NBE) and a deep level emission (DLE) were observed in all ZnO nanorod samples. The highest peak of NBE and the lower DLE appeared in 0.06 M precursor; however, the highest peak of DLE and the lower peak of NBE appeared in the 0.02 M precursor. It is possible to explain these phenomena as results of the better crystal quality and homogeneous shape of the nanorods in the precursor solution of 0.06 M, and as resulting from the bed crystal quality and the formation of Zn vacancies in the nanorods due to the lack of $Zn^{++}$ in the 0.02 M precursor.

A study on the preparation of nickel oxide nanoparticles using electron beam irradiation is described. Nickel nanoparticles were synthesized with nickel chloride hexahydrate as a metal precursor and different sodium hydroxide concentrations using electron beam irradiation. The effects of sodium hydroxide concentration and electron beam absorbed doses were investigated. The samples were synthesized at different sodium hydroxide concentrations and with absorbed doses of 100 to 500 kGy at room temperature. Synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The nanoparticle morphologies seemed to be non-spherical and aggregated. The 1:1 molar ratio of nickel chloride hexahydrate and sodium hydroxide showed a higher purity and saturation magnetization value of 13.0 emu/g. The electron beam absorbed dose was increased with increasing nickel nanoparticle nucleation.
Trimethyllysine(TML) is in vivo released when the methylated proteins are subjected to metabolic breakdown and may serve as a precursor for the biosynthesis of carnitine. It was also demonstrated that high concentration of free TML was observed in red blood cell. Therefore, in order to study the functions of TML in RBC we determined the concentration of TML and carnitine in RBC of hyperthyroid and hypothyroid rats and the following results were observed. 1)In hyperthyroid rats, the concentrations of TML, free carnitine and acylcarnitine in RBC were increased. 2) In hypothyroid rats, the concentrations of TML and acylcarnitine were increased but free carnitine was sharply decreased. 3) In diabetic rats, TML and free carnitine both were inclined to decrease, but not significant statistically. 4) In fasting rats, TML was not changed but free carnitine was sharply decreased. These results suggest that TML in RBC is not directly related to biosynthesis of carnitine.

Aluminosilicate materials as precursors are heterogenous in nature, consisting of inert and partially reactive portion, and have varying proportions depending upon source materials. It is essential to assess the reactivity of precursor prior to synthesize geopolymers. Moreover, reactivity may act as decisive factor for setting molar concentration of NaOH, curing temperature and setting proportion of different precursors. In this experimental work, the reactivities of two precursors, low calcium (fly ash (FA)) and high calcium (ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS)), were assessed through the dissolution of aluminosilicate at (i) three molar concentrations (8, 12, and 16 M) of NaOH solution, (ii) 6 to 24 h dissolution time, and (iii) 20-100℃. Based on paratermeters influencing the reactivity, different proportions of ternary binders (two precursors and ordinary cement) were activated by the combined NaOH and Na2SiO3 solutions with two alkaline activators to precursor ratios, to synthesize the geopolymer. Reactivity results revealed that GGBS was 20-30% more reactive than FA at 20℃, at all three molar concentrations, but its reactivity decreased by 32-46% with increasing temperature due to the high calcium content. Setting time of geopolymer paste was reduced by adding GGBS due to its fast reactivity. Both GGBS and cement promoted the formation of all types of gels (i.e., C-S-H, C-A-S-H, and N-A-S-H). As a result, it was found that a specified mixing proportion could be used to improve the compressive strength over 30 MPa at both the ambient and hot curing conditions.
Vitamin D is present in two forms, ergocalciferol (vitamin $D_2$) produced by plants and cholecalciferol (vitamin $D_3$) produced by animal tissues or by the action of ultraviolet light on 7-dehydrocholesterol in human skin. Both forms of vitamin D are biologically inactive pro-hormones that must undergo sequential hydroxylations in the liver and the kidney before they can bind to and activate the vitamin D receptor. The hormonally active form of vitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 $[1,25(OH)_2D]$, plays an essential role in calcium and phosphate metabolism, bone growth, and cellular differentiation. Renal synthesis of $1,25(OH)_2D$ from its endogenous precursor, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD), is the rate-limiting and is catalyzed by the $1{\alpha}$-hydroxylase. Vitamin D dependent rickets type I (VDDR-I), also referred to as vitamin D $1{\alpha}$-hydroxylase deficiency or pseudovitamin D deficiency rickets, is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized clinically by hypotonia, muscle weakness, growth failure, hypocalcemic seizures in early infancy, and radiographic findings of rickets. Characteristic laboratory features are hypocalcemia, increased serum concentrations of parathyroid hormone (PTH), and low or undetectable serum concentrations of $1,25(OH)_2D$ despite normal or increased concentrations of 25OHD. Recent advances have showed in the cloning of the human $1{\alpha}$-hydroxylase and revealed mutations in its gene that cause VDDR-I. This review presents the biology of vitamin D, and $1{\alpha}$-hydroxylase mutations with clinical findings.
Poly-gamma-glutamic acid ($\gamma$-PGA) is a mucilaginous and biodegradable compound produced by Bacillus subtilis from fermented soybeans, and is found in the traditional Korean soy product, cheongkukjang. This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of $\gamma$-PGA from a food source on the concentration of the neurotransmitter GABA and its metabolic precursor glutamate in diet-induced obese rats. Eight-week old male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=60) were used. The rats were divided into two groups and obesity was induced by providing either a 10% control fat or 45% high fat diet for 5 weeks. The rats were then blocked into 6 groups and supplemented with a 0.1% $\gamma$-PGA diet for 4 weeks. After sacrifice, brain and serum GABA and glutamate concentrations were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography with fluorometric detection. The rats fed the high fat diet had significantly increased body weights. $\gamma$-PGA supplementation significantly increased serum concentrations of glutamate and GABA in the control fat diet groups while this effect was not found in the high fat groups. In the brain, glutamate concentrations were significantly higher in the $\gamma$-PGA supplemented groups both in rats fed the normal and high fat diets than in the no $\gamma$-PGA controls. GABA concentrations showed the same tendency. The results indicated that $\gamma$-PGA intake increased GABA concentrations in the serum and brain. However, the effects were not shown in obese rats.
Ammonium (NH4+) serves as a nitrogen source, but its elevated levels can hinder plant growth and production. Excess NH4+ with α-ketoglutarate is assimilated into glutamate, a precursor of proline and glutathione (GSH). This study aimed to investigate the effects of excessive NH4+ on the regulation of proline and GSH synthesis. Detached leaves from oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) were fed with 0, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 mM NH4Cl for 16 h. As the NH4+ concentrations increased, the leaves exhibited progressive wilting and yellowing. Furthermore, total carotenoid and chlorophyll concentrations declined in response to all NH4+ treatments, with the lowest levels observed in 1000 mM NH4+ treatment. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration showed a minor increase at low NH4+ concentration (50 and 100 mM) treatments but a significant increase at high NH4+ (500 and 1000 mM), which was consistent with the localization of H2O2. Amino acid concentrations increased with increasing in NH4+ concentration, while the protein concentration displayed the opposite trend. Proline and cysteine concentrations exhibited a gradual increase in response to increasing NH4+ concentrations. However, GSH concentrations rose only in the 50 mM NH4+ treatment and decreased in the 500 and 1000 mM NH4+ treatments. These results indicate that excessive NH4+ is primarily assimilated into proline, while GSH synthesis is adversely affected.

We fabricated textured polycrystalline $CoFe_2O_4$ thin films on $Pt(111)/TiO_2/SiO_2/Si$ substrate through a sol-gel method. We varied the thickness of the films, by using precursor solutions with different concentrations of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 M, and by depositing 5, 8, or 10 layers on the substrate by spin-coating. X-ray diffraction spectra indicated that when the precursor concentration of the solution was higher than 0.1 M, the spin-coated films were preferentially oriented in the <111> direction. Inspection of the surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy revealed that $CoFe_2O_4$ thin films prepared with 0.2 M solution and 5-time spin-coatings had smoother surface, as compared to the other conditions. Each coating had an average thickness of about 50 nm. The magnetic properties measured by vibrating sample magnetometer showed magnetic anisotropy, as evidenced from the difference in the in-plane and out-of-plane hysteresis loops, which we attributed to the textured orientation of the $CoFe_2O_4$ thin films.
This study was focused on the optimization of low-pressure ultrasonic spraying process for synthesis of pure ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ nanoparticles. As process variables, pressure in the reactor, precursor concentration, and reaction temperature were changed in order to control the chemical and microstructural properties of iron oxide nanoparticles including crystal phase, mean particle size and particle size distribution. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies revealed that pure ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ nanoparticles with narrow particle size distribution of 5-15 nm were successfully synthesized from iron pentacarbonyl ($Fe(CO)_{5}$) in hexane under 30 mbar with precursor concentrations of 0.1M and 0.2M, at temperatures over $800^{\circ}C$. Also magnetic properties, coercivity ($H_c$) and saturation magnetization ($M_s$) were reported in terms of the microstructure of particles based on the results from vibration sampling magnetometer (VSM).
