Treatment of Phosphorus and Suspended Solid in Reject Water of Sewage Using an Integrated Slow Mixing/Sedimentation and Net Fit Fiber Filtration System (일체형 완속교반/침전 그물망 압착식 섬유여과장치를 이용한 하수처리장 반류수 내 고농도 인 및 부유물질 처리)

  • An integrated slow mixing/sedimentation and net fit fiber filtration system has been developed to reduce the high concentrations of suspended solid (SS) and total phosphorus (T-P) in the reject water from sewage/wastewater. A filtration device used in this experiment consists of coagulation, in-line mixing, air injection, slow mixing/sedimentation, and filtration processes. The performance test using this device was carried out with six operational modes for reject water from sewage treatment plant. Experimental conditions used were 16.7, 33.3, 41.7 and 50.0 ton/day of flow rate and 2~4 of Al/P molar ratio. By injection of coagulant in each operational mode, the high removal efficiencies of SS and T-P were obtained, but continuous operation time was decreased to 7.8~11.4 min in most modes. However, when the Mode 5 of the developed filtration device was applied, the continuous operation time was maintained up to 88.2 min. Also, it was found that the continuous operation time in the Mode 5 using the developed system was increased from 8 to 11.3 times longer than those in other modes. Backwashing flow rate was also very low at 5.4% of total filtered water. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Mode 5 of the developed filtration system was the most efficient treatment method for the removal of high concentrations of SS and T-P.

  • Iron oxides ($Fe_3O_4$) are metabolically secreted after endocytosed by cells, indicating no cytotoxicity. Therefore, they are widely used as a contrast agent before photographing of magnetic resonance imaging. In this study, iron oxide nanoparticles are synthesized by the co-precipitation method and subsequently immobilized with a homing peptide (AP), which specifically interacts with interleukin-4 receptor located on the membrane of endothelial and bladder cancer cells. The size of AP-immobilized iron oxide particle is about 39 nm. Intracellular uptake of the AP-immobilized iron oxide nanoparticles was investigated using bladder cancer cells and fibroblasts as the control. As the result, the nanoparticles are specificially uptaken by bladder cancer cells. However, the nanoparticles are not specificially uptaken by fibroblast. It could be said that the AP-immobilized iron oxide nanoparticles have a potential to be used as a contrast agent for early diagnosis of cancer.

Simultaneous Flotation and Determination of Trace Cobalt, Copper and Total Chromium in Sea water by $La(OH)_3$ Coprecipitation ($La(OH)_3$ 공침에 의한 해수중 흔적량 코발트, 구리, 및 전체 크롬의 동시 부선 및 정량)

  • The precipitate flotation using $La(OH)_3$ as a coprecipitant was studied for the simultaneous determination of trace three elements in a sea water. Several experimental conditions such as pH, coprecipitant and surfactant were investigated with an artificial sea water. To remove the influence of Cr(VI) the Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) using $NaBH_4$ prior to the flotation. Trace amounts of Cu(II), Co(II) and total Cr in 1.0 l sea water was coprecipitated together with the precipitation of $La(OH)_3$ in the solution of pH 9.8 adjusted with 3.OM NaOH solution. The precipitate was floated by using a mixed surfactant (1 to 8 of each 0.5% ethanolic sodium oleate and sodium dodecylsulfate solution) by bubbling a nitrogen gas. The floats was separated and filtrated from the mother liquor by suction. The precipitate was dissolved in 7.0 M $HNO_3$ solution and then marked to 25.0 ml with a deionized water. These elements were determined by graphite fumace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. This method was applied to determine the elements in the sea water of the Eastern and Western coasts. And the recoveries were over 90.0% in the samples into which given amounts of the analyte elements were spiked.

Physicochemical Properties of MnO2 Catalyst Prepared via Hydrothermal Process and its Application for CO Oxidation (수열방법으로 합성된 이산화망간의 물리화학적 특성과 일산화탄소 산화반응)

  • MnO2 was prepared by a hydrothermal process method in the range of 120-200 ℃ and 0.5-5 h, calcined at 300 ℃ after induction of precipitation using KMnO4 and MnCl2・4H2O, and its catalytic activity was compared for CO oxidation. The catalysts were characterized using by X-ray diffraction, N2-sorption, scanning electron microscopy, and temperature programmed reduction of H2 or CO. The crystalline structure of pure α-MnO2 or hybrid α/β-MnO2 was controlled by the preparation conditions. The pure α-MnO2 showed better catalytic activity and thermal stability than hybrid α/β-MnO2. Especially, α-MnO2 prepared at 150 ℃ for 1 h has the highest specific surface area 214 m2 g-1, reducibility and labile lattice oxygen species analyzed by H2, CO-TPR, respectively. It also showed the best CO oxidation activity in both conditions of temperature programmed and isothermal reaction. The results came from the physicochemical properties of catalysts like the crystalline structure, specific surface area, reducibility and lattice oxygen species, and which are correlated with catalytic performance.

Evaluation of groundwater recharge rate for land uses at Mandae stream watershed using SWAT HRU Mapping module (SWAT HRU Mapping module을 이용한 해안면 만대천 유역의 토지이용별 지하수 함양량 평가)

  • The hydrologic models, capable of simulating groundwater recharge for long-term period and effects on it of crops management in the agricultural areas, have been used to compute groundwater recharge in the agricultural fields. Among these models, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) has been widely used because it could interpret hydrologic conditions for the long time considering effects of weather condition, land uses, and soil. However the SWAT model couldn't represent the spatial information of Hydrologic Response Unit (HRU), the SWAT HRU mapping module was developed in 2010. With this capability, it is possible to assume and analyze spatio-temporal groundwater recharge. In this study, groundwater recharge of rate for various crops in the Mandae stream watershed was estimated using SWAT HRU Mapping module, which can simulate spato-temporal recharge rate. As a result of this study, Coefficient of determination ($R^2$) and Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (NSE) for flow calibration were 0.80 and 0.72, respectively, and monthly groundwater recharge of Mandae watershed in Haean-myeon was 381.24 mm/year. It was 28% of total precipitation in 2009. Groundwater recharge rate was 73.54 mm/month and 73.58 mm/month for July and August 2009, which is approximately 18 times of groundwater recharge rate for December 2009. The groundwater recharges for each month through the year were varying. The groundwater recharge was smaller in the spring and winter seasons, relatively. So, it is necessary to enforce proper management of groundwater recharge during droughty season. Also, the SWAT HRU Mapping module could show the result of groundwater recharge as a GIS map and analyze spatio-temporal groundwater recharge. So, this method, proposed in this study, would be quite useful to make groundwater management plans at agriculture-dominant watershed.

Immuno-Modulatory Activities of Polysaccharides separated from Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum in Macrophage Cells (구절초(Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum)에서 분리된 다당류의 대식세포 면역조절 활성)

  • Macrophages play a pivotal role in the innate and adaptive immune systems. This study investigated the immuno-modulatory activities of polysaccharides separated from Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum (CZPS) in macrophages. Polysaccharides from Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum were extracted by the ethanol precipitation method. RAW 264.7 mouse macrophage cell line was treated with CZPS (4 to $128{\mu}g/mL$), and there was no cytotoxicity at a dose below $32{\mu}g/mL$. The levels of nitric oxide (NO) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$ and interleukin (IL)-6, IL-$1{\beta}$) production in the CZPS treated group ($32{\mu}g/mL$) were $6.5{\pm}0.12{\mu}m$ (NO), $1252.8{\pm}79.85$ (TNF-${\alpha}$), $305.4{\pm}29.41$ (IL-6), and $683.3{\pm}59.71$ (IL-$1{\beta}$), respectively, and they were significantly increased when compared to the control group; $2.2{\pm}0.03{\mu}m$ (NO), $452.3{\pm}38.34$ (TNF-${\alpha}$), $31.7{\pm}5.75$ (IL-6), and $184.1{\pm}11.52$ (IL-$1{\beta}$). Additionally, protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and phosphorylation of MAPKs and NF-${\kappa}B$ expression were significantly increased upon CZPS treatment. Therefore, these results indicated that polysaccharides separated from Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum (CZPS) may have a potential immunomodulatory activity in macrophages through MAPKs and NF-${\kappa}B$ signaling, and this information is useful for the development of immune enhancing adjuvant materials using a natural ingredient.

Application of Very Short-Term Rainfall Forecasting to Urban Water Simulation using TREC Method (TREC기법을 이용한 초단기 레이더 강우예측의 도시유출 모의 적용)

  • In this study the very short-term rainfall forecasting and storm water forecasting using the weather radar data were implemented in an urban stream basin. As forecasting time increasing, the very short-term rainfall forecasting results show that the correlation coefficient was decreased and the root mean square error was increased and then the forecasting model accuracy was decreased. However, as a result of the correlation coefficient up to 60-minute forecasting time is maintained 0.5 or higher was obtained. As a result of storm water forecasting in an urban area, the reduction in peak flow and outflow volume with increasing forecasting time occurs, the peak time was analyzed that relatively matched. In the application of storm water forecasting by radar rainfall forecast, the errors has occurred that we determined some of the external factors. In the future, we believed to be necessary to perform that the continuous algorithm improvement such as simulation of rapid generation and disappearance phenomenon by precipitation echo, the improvement of extreme rainfall forecasting in urban areas, and the rainfall-runoff model parameter optimizations. The results of this study, not only urban stream basin, but also we obtained the observed data, and expand the real-time flood alarm system over the ungaged basins. In addition, it is possible to take advantage of development of as multi-sensor based very short-term rainfall forecasting technology.

Rapid Analysis of Boric Acid in Nickel Plating Solutions (니켈도금액중의 붕산 신속정량법)

  • Only mannitol or glycerine is generally used for the determination of boric acid in a nickel plating solution in order to make its acidic property so strong that it can be titrated with NaOH. However, these solutions give very amgiguous color change of indicator due to the precipitation of nickel salts . Therefore, only experienced dchemistsorwell trained workimen can accurately confirm the actual end point of the titratiion. For eliminating such interference of nickel salts and easily confirming the end point by any persons , the author attempted to find out a solution which produces no precipitates during the titration in these experiments, and also he tried to funish the reason for ambiguousness in titration. The following results were obtained after many experiments. (1) In any titrations which produce nickel salts such nI(oh)$_2$, the salt is formed umption very approximate to the end point, which shows some error by the consumption of titrant(NaOH) . Then, the pink color of phenolphthalein is absorbed by Ni(OH)$_2$ and the pH jumping at the end pint is also diminished to as little as less than 15% of the total phenophthalein ph range. (2) Known methods by complex salts of citrate,w hich do not produce precipitates of Ni(OH)$_2$, are also not very satisfactory, because, the pH jumping at the end point is only about 35% and the color change of phenolphthalein is form blue-green to purple-blue. (3) New method by complex salts of oxalate were attempted in these experiments. They also did not produce precipitates of Ni(OH)$_2$ and were very satisfactory in color change at the end of point was about 65% and the color change was from blue-green to purpled. In this methods, analytica cost was minimized by the use of less amounts of cheaper chemicals than the conventional citrates complex methods. The mixture of chemicals used was composed methods. The mixture of chemical used was composed of 37g/ι of sodium oxalate(Na$_2$C$_2$O$_4$$.$5H$_2$O), 2g/ι of phenolphthalein, and 400ml /ι of glycerin. The accuracy of analysis was within the error of 0.5%. (4) The procedure of analysis was as follows. One ml of nickel plating solution was taken out and to it were added 20ml of water and 20 ml of the above mixture for the indicator. The solution was titrated with 0.1N NaOH. The quantity of boric acid was calculated by the following equation. Boric acid (g/ι) = 6.184${\times}$F${\times}$ml .

A study on the variation of design flood due to climate change in the ungauged urban catchment (기후변화에 따른 미계측 도시유역의 확률홍수량 변화에 관한 연구)

  • This research evaluated the change in rainfall quantile during S1, S2, and S3 by using Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 climate scenario HadGEM3-RA Regional Climate Model (RCM) produced by downscaling and bias correlation compared to the past standard observation data S0. Also, the maximum flood peak volume and flood area were calculated by using the urban runoff model and the impact of climate change was analyzed in each period. For this purpose, Gumbel distribution was used as an appropriate model based on the method of maximum likelihood. As a result, in the case of the 10 year-frequency which is the design of most urban drainage facilities, the rainfall quantile is in increased about 10% if we assume 50 years from now with the $3^{rd}$ quarter value and about 20% if we assume 70 years from now. This result implies that the installed urban drainage facility based on the currently set design flood volume cannot be met the design criteria in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to reflect future climate conditions to current urban drainage facilities.

Developing Forest Fire Occurrence Probability Model Using Meteorological Characteristics (기상자료(氣象資料)를 이용(利用)한 산불발생확률모형(發生確率模型)의 개발(開發))

  • Preparing the era of forest resources management requires studies on forest fire. This study attempted to develop forest fire occurrence model using meteorological characteristics for the practical purposes of forecasting forest fire danger rate. To accomplish this goal, the relationships between forest fire occurrence and meteorological characteristics are estimated. In the process, the forest fire occurrence pattern of the study region(Taegu-Kyungpook) is categorized by employing qualification IV method. The study region was divided into three areas such as, Taegu, Andong and Pohang area. The meteorological variables emerged as affective to forest fire occurrence are relative humidity, longitude of sunshine, and duration of precipitation. To estimate the probability of forest fire danger, forest fire occurrence of three areas are regressed on the time series data of affective meteorological variables using logistic and probit model. The effectiveness of the models estimated are tested and showed acceptable degree of goodness. Those models developed would be helpful to increase the efficiency of forest fire management such as detection of forest fire occurrence and effective disposition of forest fire fight equipments.
