  • The crystal structures and morphologies of precipitates in $L1_0$-ordered TiAl intermetallics containing nitrogen were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Under aging at an approximate temperature of 1073 K after quenching from 1423 K, TiAl hardens appreciably due to the nitride precipitation. TEM observations revealed that needle-like precipitates, which lie only in one direction parallel to the [001] axis of the $L1_0$-TiAl matrix, appear in the matrix preferentially at the dislocations. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern analyses showed that the needle-shaped precipitate is perovskite-type $Ti_3AlN$ (P-phase). The orientation relationship between the P-phase and the $L1_0$-TiAl matrix was found to be $(001)_P//(001)_{TiAl}\;and\;[010]_P//[010]_{TiAl}$. By aging at higher temperatures or for longer periods at 1073 K, plate-like precipitates of $Ti_2AlN$ (H-phase) with a hexagonal structure formed on the {111} planes of the $L1_0$-TiAl matrix. The orientation relationship between the $Ti_2AlN$ and the $L1_0$-TiAl matrix is $(0001)_H//(111)_{TiAl}\;and\;_H//_{TiAl}$.

  • In this paper, the effects of precipitates and Mn-solute atoms on the recrystallization behavior of an Al-Mn alloy was studied using micro-Vickers hardness, electrical conductivity measurements and optical microscopy. Various thermo-mechanical processes were designed to investigate the different morphologies, and the solute concentration, of Mn in the matrix. The results indicate that the recrystallization temperature, $T_R$ and time, $t_R$, are influenced by the amount of M-solute atoms in the matrix, and that the recrystallization microstructure is influenced by the amount of precipitates. Recrystallization in the Slow-Cooling specimen was rapid due to its low concentration of Mn-solute atoms, and the crystal-grain size was the smallest due to finely distributed precipitates. However, in the case of the No-Holding specimen, elongated grains were observed at the low annealing temperature and the largest recrystallized grains were observed at the high annealing temperatures (compared with Slow-Cooling and Base specimens) due to the high Mn-solute atoms in the matrix.

  • The relationship between the hardness and interlamellar spacing of discontinuous precipitates (DPs) formed by continuous cooling was studied for Mg-9%Al-1%Zn alloy. After solution treatment at 683 K for 24 h, the specimens were cooled to room temperature with different cooling rates ranging from 0.2 to 2 K·min-1, in order to obtain DPs with various interlamellar spacings. It was found that cooling rate of 2 K·min-1 yielded only small amount of nodular DPs at the grain boundaries, while cooling rates below 2 K·min-1 yielded both DPs and continuous precipitates (CPs). The volume fraction of DPs increased with increasing cooling rate up to 0.5 K·min-1, over which it abruptly decreased. The hardness of DPs was increased with an increase in the cooling rate, whereas the interlamellar spacing of the DPs was decreased with respect to cooling rate. The hardness of the DPs formed by continuous cooling was correlated with the interlamellar spacing and can follow a Hall-Petch type relation as in the case of pearlite with lamellar morphology.

  • This study elucidates the formation mechanism of SnO plate observed during the precipitation reaction of a $SnCl_2$ aqueous solution. $Sn_{21}Cl_{16}(OH)_{14}O_6$ and $Sn_6O_4(OH)_4$ precipitates was formed at pH=3~5 and at pH=11, respectively. When the pH was in the range of 11.5~12.5, the $Sn_6O_4(OH)_4$ precipitates dissolved into $HSnO_2{^-}[Sn_6O_4(OH)_4+4OH^-={6HSnO_2{^-}+2H^+]$ and dissolved $HSnO_2{^-}$ ions reprecipitated to SnO plate $[HSnO_2{^-}+H^+=SnO+H_2O]$. The $Sn_6O_4(OH)_4$ precipitates completely transformed into SnO plate through a repeated process of dissolution-precipitation in the range of pH=11.5~12.5.

  • The creep rates of polycrystalline $L1_2$-ordered $Co_3Ti$ and B2-ordered NiAl-Hf intermetallics decrease appreciably with the fine precipitation of the coherent disordered fcc Co-rich phase and $Ni_2AlHf$ phase. With B2-ordered NiAl containing $L2_1-Ni_2AlHf$ precipitates, transmission electron microscope observations of the interaction between dislocations and spherical precipitates revealed that the dislocations tend to be strongly attracted to the particle interfaces during the creep deformation. On the other hand, with $L1_2$-ordered $Co_3Ti$, the significance of the threshold stress is discussed based upon the transmission electron microscope observations of the interaction between dislocations and precipitates. The superdislocations produced during deformation tend to be strongly attracted and dissociated as they meet the coherent disordered precipitates because the anti-phase boundary energy in the disordered phase was zero. An extra force required to pull the dislocations out of the disordered particles during the creep deformation establishes the threshold stress which is beneficial for improving creep strength under lower stresses.

  • This paper investigates the influence of aging time on creep properties via a small punch creep test and evaluates the microstructural change of P122 steel at $600^{\circ}C$. The area fraction of precipitates was quantitatively analyzed to identify the relationship between the creep rupture life and precipitates was coarsening behavior of precipitates along the grain boundaries was also investigated for various aging times. It is found that this coarsening behavior led to a loss of solution hardening and rewulte in a hardness drop and a reduction of creep life.

  • This study reports on Co/$Co_2$MnSn two-phase magnets. The Co/$Co_2$MnSn two-phase magnet has Co precipitates in a $Co_2MnSn$ Heusler alloy matrix, in which the two phases are exchange-coupled at the phase boundary. The as-casted Co/$Co_2$MnSn system, which has Co-Mn solid solution precipitates in a $Co_2$MnSn Heusler alloy matrix, showed that the Co solid solution precipitates are crystallographically coherent and there is exchange coupling at the phase boundary. To form pure Co precipitates by removal of Mn solute atoms in Co-Mn solid solution, annealing was carried out 48 hours at $870^{\circ}C$. After annealing, the low $T_c$ and low magnetization phase of the Co-Mn solid solution became a high $T_c$ and high magnetization phase of hexagonal Co.

  • This study observed the effect of neutron irradiation and ageing on the microstructure, hardness, and corrosion resistance of SAV-1 (Al-Mg-Si) alloy. The investigated material was irradiated with neutrons to fluences of 1021-1026 n/m2 in the WWR-K research reactor and kept in dry storage. Long-term irradiation led to an increase in hardness of the alloy and a deterioration of pitting corrosion resistance. Post-irradiation ageing for 1 h at 100-300 ℃ resulted in a decrease in microhardness of the irradiated SAV-1. The effect of post-irradiation ageing on pitting corrosion was made clear through the formation of Guinier-Preston zones and secondary precipitates in the Al matrix. Ageing at 250 ℃ corresponded to the development of stable microstructure and the highest corrosion resistance for the irradiated samples. Mg2Si, Si, and needle-shaped β" precipitates were formed in SAV-1 alloy that was irradiated with low fluences. β" and clusters of rod-shaped B-type precipitates were observed in highly irradiated samples. The precipitates were similar to those seen in non-irradiated pseudo-binary Al-Mg2Si alloys with Si excess.

  • We investigated geochemical contaminants and Fe, Al behavior in precipitates of acid mine drainage (AMD) from the Donghae abandoned coal mine, Taebaek, Gangwon Province using aqueous chemical analyses, XRD, IR, and 27Al NMR, Our results showed that water chemistry changed with pH and Eh, and saturation indices of chemical species in the AMD. According to saturation calculated by visual MINTEQ, the AMD was saturated with various Fe-, Al-oxyhydroxide minerals. Reddish brown precipitates are composed of schwertmannite, ferrihydrite, and goethite, whereas whitish precipitates are composed mostly of alumimous minerals such as poorly crystallized basaluminite with trace Al13-Tridecamer. It is important to apply active treatment methods rather than simple storage pond and to control the precipitation and solubility of iron species and aluminous species for ensuring remediation and control for the AMD discharged from the Donghae abandoned coal mine.

  • The effect of Al addition on the precipitation behavior of a binary Mg-Zn alloy was investigated based on the changes in the morphology, distribution and element concentration of precipitates formed during aging treatment. The as-cast Mg-6.0 mass%Zn (Mg-6Zn) and Mg-6.0 mass%Zn-3.0 mass%Al (Al-added) were homogenized at 613 K for 48 h and at 673 K for 12 h; they were then solid solution treated at 673 K for 0.5 h and 1 h, respectively. The Mg-6Zn and Al-added alloys were aged at 403 K and 433 K. The peak hardness of the Al-added alloy was higher than that of the Mg-6Zn alloy at each aging temperature. Rod-like, plate-like, blocky, and lath-like precipitates were observed in the Al-added alloy aged at 433 K for 230.4 ks, although the rod-like and plate-like precipitates were observed in the TEM microstructure of the Mg-6Zn alloy aged at 433 K for 360 ks. Moreover, the precipitates in the Al-added alloy were refined and densely distributed compared with those in the Mg-6Zn alloy. The Cliff-Lorimer plots obtained by the EDS analysis of the rod-like ${\beta}_1^'$ and plate-like ${\beta}_2^'$ phases in the Al-added alloy peak aged at 433 K for 230.4 ks were examined. It was confirmed that the ${\beta}_2^'$ phases had higher concentration of solute Al atom than was present in the ${\beta}_1^'$ phases, indicating that the properties of precipitates can be changed by Al addition.
