  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the role experience of preceptor nurses in general hospitals. Methods: Data were collected from 10 experienced preceptor nurses through in-depth interviews about their experiences. The main question was "How do you describe your experience as a preceptor in the process of role adaptation?" Qualitative data from field and transcribed notes were analyzed using Strauss & Corbin's grounded theory methodology. Results: The core category of experience in the process of role adaptation as a preceptor nurse was identified as 'being responsible to teach from beginning to end'. The participants identified five interactional strategies; 'abruptly having to take the role as a preceptor unwilling', 'difficulties in field training with variable situations', 'preceptor and new nurse with love and hate relationships', 'bring up preceptee as a child', 'redefining the concept of preceptor'. Conclusion: The results of this study provide useful information for understanding the role of preceptor nurses in general hospital who have to teach new nurses with patience and responsibility. It will be needed to establishment of preceptor's role and educational standards, and policy for their rewards by nurse manager. Additionally, making cooperative educational climate in nursing ward is important for teaching new nurse.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to develop a core competency evaluation tool of the preceptors training new graduate nurses and to determine the validity of the developed instrument. Method : This study was conducted in 2 phases. In phase I, preceptor's core competency list was developed through literature review, focus group interview, and review by nursing directors and nurse managers. In phase II, 60 preceptors were evaluated with the developed instrument and categorized into excellent, good & poor core competency groups. For validation of the instrument, new graduates' clinical performance improvement and satisfaction with preceptor were compared between excellent and poor group. Result : The data were analyzed by SPSS P.C and the results were as follows. 1) Preceptor's core competencies were classified into three domains; Role model(10 items), Socialization facilitator(8 items), and Educator(16 items), and each item had four point system of "strongly agree" to "strongly disagree". Cronbach'${\alpha}$ of the instrument was.9416. 2) Comparison of clinical performance improvement and satisfaction with preceptor of the new graduates trained by excellent and poor preceptors revealed that new graduates' clinical performance improvement(p=.015) and satisfaction with the preceptor(p=.005) were significantly higher in the excellent core competency preceptor group than the poor core competency preceptor group. Conclusion : The validity of the preceptor's core competency evaluation tool developed in this study was confirmed. Therefore, this tool can be effectively utilized for education and evaluation of new graduates' preceptors in clinical settings.

  • Purpose: The objectives of this study were to categorize the conflict management types of preceptor nurses and determine the effects of these types on preceptors' role perception and core competencies. Methods: Data was collected from 192 preceptor nurses with at least two years experiences in general hospitals, from July 1 to July 31, 2022. Conflict management type, preceptor role perception, and core competency were investigated using structured instruments. The data was analyzed using K-means cluster analysis, Independent samples t-test, One-way ANOVA with Scheffé's test, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The conflict management types were categorized into four types; comprehensive type (cluster 1), integrating, obliging, compromising type (cluster 2), undifferentiated type (cluster 3) and obliging, avoiding type (cluster 4). The effect of conflict management types on preceptors' role recognition occurred in the following order of cluster 2 (integrating/obliging/compromising type), cluster 1 (comprehensive type), and cluster 4 (obliging/avoiding type). Next, cluster 1 (comprehensive type), cluster 2 (integrating/obliging/compromising type), and cluster 4 (obliging/avoiding type) were shown in the order of the impact on the core competencies of the preceptor. Conclusion: When preceptor nurses use a mixture of various attributes of conflict management evenly, they have been shown to demonstrate effective preceptor role recognition and core competencies. Therefore, it is proposed that future development of conflict management training programs for preceptor nurses should begin with identifying their conflict management type, followed by creating a program that addresses any deficiencies.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of nursing student's preceptorship and to compare the perception on the readiness of clinical competence between nurse preceptors and senior-level nursing students. Method: Data was collected with self-administered questionnaires and analyzed by descriptive statistics and t-test. Study participants were 65 preceptors in one university hospital and 59 nursing students in the same university. Result: The knowledge and satisfaction about preceptorship in the nurse preceptor was 2.66 and 2.70 out of 5. Most of the preceptors (70%) agreed to the students preceptorship program even though the intention to be a preceptor was very low (14.1%). They responded that the merits of student preceptorship were self-development (29.7%) and knowledge acquisition (29.7%), whereas the disadvantages were increased workload (67.2%) and increased stress (23.4%). Requested rewards were monetary reward (44.4%) and promotion (33.3%). In all areas of clinical competence readiness, students' perception score was higher than preceptors'. Conclusion: Nursing education must reexamine current approaches to clinical teaching and seek methods to better prepare future nurses. These findings may serve as a guide to create an ideal students preceptorship program to place a greater emphasis on the competencies desired for providing high quality nursing services.
