  • Object recognition techniques using principal component analysis are disposed to be decreased recognition rate when lighting change of image happens. The purpose of this thesis is to propose an object recognition technique using new PCA analysis method that discriminates an object in database even in the case that the variation of illumination in training images exists. And the object recognition algorithm proposed here represents more enhanced recognition rate using improved k-Nearest Neighbor. In this thesis, we proposed an object recognition algorithm which creates object space by pre-processing and being learned image using histogram equalization and median filter. By spreading histogram of test image using histogram equalization, the effect to change of illumination is reduced. This method is stronger to change of illumination than basic PCA method and normalization, and almost removes effect of illumination, therefore almost maintains constant good recognition rate. And, it compares ingredient projected test image into object space with distance of representative value and recognizes after representative value of each object in model image is made. Each model images is used in recognition unit about some continual input image using improved k-Nearest Neighbor in this thesis because existing method have many errors about distance calculation.

Exploratory Research on Automating the Analysis of Scientific Argumentation Using Machine Learning (머신 러닝을 활용한 과학 논변 구성 요소 코딩 자동화 가능성 탐색 연구)

  • In this study, we explored the possibility of automating the process of analyzing elements of scientific argument in the context of a Korean classroom. To gather training data, we collected 990 sentences from science education journals that illustrate the results of coding elements of argumentation according to Toulmin's argumentation structure framework. We extracted 483 sentences as a test data set from the transcription of students' discourse in scientific argumentation activities. The words and morphemes of each argument were analyzed using the Python 'KoNLPy' package and the 'Kkma' module for Korean Natural Language Processing. After constructing the 'argument-morpheme:class' matrix for 1,473 sentences, five machine learning techniques were applied to generate predictive models relating each sentences to the element of argument with which it corresponded. The accuracy of the predictive models was investigated by comparing them with the results of pre-coding by researchers and confirming the degree of agreement. The predictive model generated by the k-nearest neighbor algorithm (KNN) demonstrated the highest degree of agreement [54.04% (${\kappa}=0.22$)] when machine learning was performed with the consideration of morpheme of each sentence. The predictive model generated by the KNN exhibited higher agreement [55.07% (${\kappa}=0.24$)] when the coding results of the previous sentence were added to the prediction process. In addition, the results indicated importance of considering context of discourse by reflecting the codes of previous sentences to the analysis. The results have significance in that, it showed the possibility of automating the analysis of students' argumentation activities in Korean language by applying machine learning.

  • Exercise is the strongest stress to which the body is ever exposed. The body responds to this stress through a set of physiological changes in its metabolic, hormonal, and immunological systems. In this study, responses of the immune system to the long-term aerobic and anaerobic exercises have been investigated. Regular moderate exercise is associated with a reduced incidence of infection compared with a sedentary groups. Aerobic training increases the heart rate and enhances the body's intake of oxygen long enough to benefit the condition of the body. In recent years, the importance of exercise in everyday life has been rapidly increasing. Moderate exercise appears to stimulate the immune system. And also, Exercise elicits an increase in the numbers of circulating lymphocytes and lymphocyte subsets (including NK cells) which is followed by a decrease in the numbers of cells during recovery from exercise. However, prolonged bouts of strenuous exercise cause a temporary depression of various aspects of immune functions (e.g. lymphocyte proliferation, monocyte antigen presentation, open window periods, exercise induced asthma, exercise induced anaphylaxis) that usually lasts 2-24 hr after exercise depending on the intensity and duration of the exercise bout. Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) was defined as a decrease of at least 15% in pre exercise forced expiratory volume in one second at any time point after exercise. This includes elevation of cortisol and cathecholamines in plasma. On the other hand, highly trained athletes exhibit a chronic mild hypercortisolism at baseline that maybe an adaptive change to chronic exercise. And, Consuming carbohydrate during prolonged strenuous exercise attenuates rises in stress hormones and appears to limit the degree of exercise-induced immune depression. Recent evidence suggests that antioxidant vitamin supplementation may also reduce exercise stress and impairment of leukocyte functions.

Applicability of the Hydrocyclone for Efficiency Improvements to Sea-water Cooling Systems (해수 냉각시스템 효율 향상을 위한 하이드로사이클론의 적용가능성)

  • Hydrocyclone has been widely used for the solid-liquid separation in many industrial sites because of its comparatively preferable applications that can be applied to wide-range particle sizes. If seawater with impurities flows through pumps or heat exchanger, it might cause an decrease in the efficiency of cooling system In this paper, we have suggested some methods of separating impurities from seawater in the cooling system by using a Hydrocyclone. The effects of design factors as solid concentration, cyclone inlet pressure, flow rate and diameter of underflow on the separating performance of the Hydrocyclone were investigated The results from this study are summarized as follows: 1) In proportion to the decrease of solid concentration, the efficiency of solid-liquid separation is improved. 2) According as the cyclone inlet pressure increases the efficiency of separation is improved. Conclusively, this research suggested that the Hydrocyclone will be used as a pre-treatment system of cooling water in machines, and eventually prevent unexpected accidents in engine systems.

An Analysis of Chemistry Textbooks' and Teachers' Conceptions on Brønsted-Lowry Acid-Base (화학 교재 및 화학 교사들의 Brønsted-Lowry 산-염기 개념에 대한 분석)

  • The goal of this study was to discover factors of difficulties on learning Brønsted-Lowry acid and base focusing viewpoint of each definition. To achieve this, we were targeting statement of textbooks and perception of teachers that have a decisive effect on students' learning. Analysis of textbooks was performed for chemistry I of high school and EBS(total 6 textbooks) which dealt with Brønsted-Lowry definition. And a survey was conducted on 24 science teachers who had Brønsted-Lowry definition teaching experience. According to the textbooks analysis, characteristics of statement way were (1) statement without viewpoint of each definition, (2) convergent statement to Arrhenius. And features of teachers' perceptions were (1) teachers who have the only one viewpoint, (2) teachers with unawareness on coexisting reason of various definitions. All of these can be explained by absence from understanding viewpoints of Arrhenius and Brønsted-Lowry. To promote students' Brønsted-Lowry learning, students should obtain viewpoints of each definition. So we suggest that pre-service teacher training curriculum and statement way of textbook should reflect viewpoints of each definition.

  • There are 17 cyber universities granted by the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Department. Most of them have Design department and their educational purpose is practical education. However, their educational process is limited of teaching how to operate computer or production tools and has not offered practical training to students for pre-designer. But it does not mean that students in cyber university are lacking in capability of design. About hundreds of students will graduate from cyber university with a certificate of the completion of a design course on February in 2005. They look for achievement contrary to negatively social view. Because according to the record of 2004 Multi-media major in Seoul Digital University, 73% of them has worked in design field. The purpose of Cyber university is not to instruct a designer but do a lifelong education. I studied how to educate students in cyber university. In other words, I researched an educational methodology in cyber university for practical skill in design, an educational effect in various design contents, an educational process for current designers and beginners, a required education in reality, an limitation of online and an unique contents for design education. And then, I discussed how students in cyber university accept the value of design in online contents and improve their design abilities.

Effects of aerobic and combined exercise on body composition and blood lipid in the middle-aged women (운동형태에 따른 중년여성의 신체구성과 혈중지질의 변화)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the effects of aerobic and complex exercise on body composition and blood lipids in the middle-aged women. Sixteen women whose ages ranged in 40 to 50 years were included in the sample of the study. The sample was divided into two groups: (a) aerobic exercise group (n = 8) and (b) combined exercise training group (n = 8). The aerobic exercise program consisted of bicycle ergometer, stepper, and treadmill, whereas; the combined exercise program was designed to improve muscular strength and aerobic capacity. Both programs took place 4 times a week for 12 weeks with the gradual increase of intensity (HRmax 60% 75% and 1 RM 60% 80%). Data were analyzed by nonparametric methods for pre-post within group mean differences (Wilcoxon signed rank test) and for between group mean differences (Wilcoxon rank sum test). Results indicated that there were statistically significant differences in BMI, body fat mass, and triglyceride within the sample of combined exercise; whereas, no significance existed in any variables within the aerobic exercise group. Results also revealed that statistical significance did exist in body fat mass between the combined and aerobic exercise group. These results implies that the combined exercise may be superior to aerobic only excercise for the body composition and blood lipid of the middle-aged women.

Technology Teachers' Motivation toward Teaching Biotechnology (생물기술교육에 대한 기술교사의 동기유발)

  • Due to the importance of biotechnological literacy, the educational community in fields such as technology education, science education, and agricultural education has acknowledged the importance of biotechnology instruction for secondary school. Although recognized as a content organizer in the field of technology education, the actual teaching of biotechnology has not been broadly implemented in technology education classes. In the perspective of expectancy-value theory, technology teachers' motivation is the key factor for affecting the biotechnology instruction. This study investigates Korean technology teachers' motivational beliefs toward biotechnology and its instruction and their perceived ability and value toward biotechnology learning contents. To measure their motivational beliefs and attitudes, a composite on-line survey (fifteen motivational beliefs items, eight biotechnology content items, and related demographic items) was developed. Based on 114 Korean technology teachers' responses the researcher performed a descriptive analysis, independent t-test, and factor analyses (exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis using M-plus 5.0 and SPSS 16.0). Korean technology teachers' abilities toward eight biotechnology contents indicated lowscores while their values were relatively high. Through the independent sample t-test by two demographic variables (gender and professional development), this study found several significant differences in the perceived value. As a preliminary finding of exploratory factor analysis, fifteen items was separated into two motivational constructs of expectancy (6 items) and value (8 items). One item (item #6) was eliminated due to the cross loading. The final findings of this study may have significant implications for professional development regarding biotechnology and its instruction (both in-service and pre-service training) of technology teachers. Also, the confirmatory facctor analysis supported the preliminary finding. Finally, this study recommends that a validity test for other population, investigation for motivational sub-constructs, and in-depth investigation toward biotechnology instruction.
