  • The purpose of this study was to characterize focal hepatic lesions through pre and post ferucarbotran-enhanced T2 and T2*-weighted imaging and to help differentiate benign and malignant lesions 대상 및 방법: Consecutive 34 patients with 52 hepatic lesions underwent MRI before and after intravenous bolus injection of ferucarbotran (Resovist Sobering, Berlin, Germany) for evaluation of focal hepatic lesions. Lesions included hemangiomas (n=17), metastases (n=12), cysts (n=10), hepatocellular carcinomas (n=8), dysplastic nodules (n=4), and focal fat deposit (n=1). T2-weighted fast spin echo (TR/TE: 4060/138) and gradient echo T2*-weighted images(TR/TE: 140/5.3, FA = 90) were obtained according to the institutional routine imaging protocol. Lesional signal-intensity and lesion-to-liver contrast changes were measured by contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) from region of interest.

  • Echo generated in digital hearing aid vent give rise to user's discomfort. For cancelling feedback echo in vent, it is required to estimate vent impulse response exactly. The vent impulse response has time varying and sparse characteristics. The IPNLMS has been known a useful adaptive algorithm to estimate vent impulse response with these characteristics. In this paper, subband sparse adaptive filter which applying IPNLMS to subband hearing aid structure is proposed to cancel echo of vent by estimating sparse vent impulse response. In the propose method, the decomposition of input signal to subband can pre-whiten each subband signal, so adaptive filter convergence speed can be improved. And the poly phase component decomposition of adaptive filter increases sparsity of each components, and the better echo cancellation can be possible without additional computation. To derive coefficients update equation of the adaptive filter, by defining the cost function based weight NLMS is defined, and the coefficient update equation of each subband is derived. For verifying performances of the adaptive filter, convergence speed, and steady state error by white signal input, and echo cancelling results by real speech input are evaluated by comparing conventional adaptive filters.

  • We propose a numerical scheme to simulate the time-domain echo signals at tracking radar for a realistic scenario where an EAD (expendable active decoy) and an airborne target are both in dynamic states. On various scenarios where the target takes different maneuvers, the trajectories of the EAD ejected from the target are accurately calculated by solving 6-DOF (Degree-of-Freedom) equations of the motion for the EAD. At each sampling time of the echo signal, the locations of the EAD and the target are assumed to be fixed. Thus, the echo power from the EAD can be simply calculated by using the Friis transmission formula. The returned power from the target can be computed based on the pre-calculated scattering matrix of the target. In this paper, an IPO (iterative physical optics) method is used to construct the scattering matrix database of the target. The sinc function-interpolation formulation (sampling theorem) is applied to compute the scattering at any incidence angle from the database. A simulator is developed based on the proposed scheme to estimate the echo signals, which can consider the movement of the airborne target and EAD, also the scattering of the target and the RF specifications of the EAD. For applications, we consider the detection probability of the target in the presence of the EAD based on Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Purpose : $T_2$-weighted half courier Echo Planar Imaging (T2HEPI) method is proposed to reduce measurement time of existing EPI by a factor of 2. In addition, high $T_2$ contrast is obtained for clinical applications. High resolution single-shot EPI images with $T_2$ contrast are obtained with $128{\times}128$ matrix size by the proposed method. Materials and methods : In order to reduce measurement time in EPI, half courier space is measured, and rest of half courier data is obtained by conjugate symmetric filling. Thus high resolution single shot EPI image with $128{\times}128$ matrix size is obtained with 64 echoes. By the arrangement of phase encoding gradients, high $T_2$ weighted images are obtained. The acquired data in k-space are shifted if there exists residual gradient field due to eddy current along phase encoding gradient, which results in a serious problem in the reconstructed image. The residual field is estimated by the correlation coefficient between the echo signal for dc and the corresponding reference data acquired during the pre-scan. Once the residual gradient field is properly estimated, it can be removed by the adjustment of initial phase encoding gradient field between $70^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$ rf pulses. Results : The suggested T2EPl is implemented in a 1.0 Tela whole body MRI system. Experiments are done with the effective echo times of 72ms and 96ms with single shot acquisitions. High resolution($128{\times}128$) volunteer head images with high $T_2$ contrast are obtained in a single scan by the proposed method. Conclusion : Using the half courier technique, higher resolution EPI images are obtained with matrix size of $128{\times}128$ in a single scan. Furthermore $T_2$ contrast is controlled by the effective echo time. Since the suggested method can be implemented by software alone (pulse sequence and corresponding tuning and reconstruction algorithms) without addition of special hardware, it can be widely used in existing MRI systems.

  • In this paper, we propose new techniques that can improve the quality of AAC and SBR encoders comprised in low bitrate HE-AAC. To reduce the pre-echo artifacts often occurring for transient blocks in AAC, we propose an extended Temporal Noise Shaping (sTNS) in which the frequency range is selectively extended down to the low-frequency region. Also, for he high-frequency region being coded by SBR encoder, tones are identified through a sinusoidal modeling and their frequencies are adjusted within the QMF band in order to reduce the noise floor due to aliasing. Spectrograms of the decoded signals were compared and listening tests were conducted to evaluate the proposed algorithm. Results confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • Two psychoacoustic models used in MPEG-1 employ different masking patterns, different masking indexes, and different computational procedures. As a result, Model 1 is inferior to Model 2 due to its worst case approach in computing the SMR even though it determines tonality and masking levels accurately. In this study, we investigate the performances of psychoacoustic models when we modify the MPEG-1 audio coder for variable bitrates. Simulation results show that Model 2 has a gain of 30 kbps in the dual channel mode and 20 kbps in the joint stereo mode. It is generally known that the joint stereo mode has a gain in bitrate compare to the dual channel mode. For signals with frequent attacks, this gain becomes larger in Model 1 than in Model 2. This is due to the fact that Model 1 uses the worst case approach in computing the SMR to reduce pre-echo

  • The dam made reservoir, a major means to overcome the problems caused by water resource's uneven supply by time and space, plays an important role, particularly, of water supply. The role of water supply will get more important, considering the usage of water resource becomes more intensive. Therefore, it is continuously required to construct new dams securing water supply and to study on effective operation plans of the dam. The size of reservoir needs to be measured according to possible supply estimation in the pre-design stage. The depth of water, at this point, should be taken. Among many ways of sounding, echo sounding has been frequently used recently. This study, therefore, presents a new way of sounding that takes less time with stronger accuracy, uniting GPS and echo sounder to apply a means of obtaining three dimensional position data. This enables the designer to escape from the conventional way of sounding in the estimation of reservoir to design and redesign a new dam.

  • Ultrasonic pulse echo method comes to be difficult to apply to the multi-layered structure with very thin layer, because the echoes from the top and the bottom of the layer are superimposed. We can easily meet this problem when the silicon chip layer in the semiconductor is inspected by a SAM equipment using fairly low frequency lower than 20MHz by which severe attenuation in the epoxy mold compound of packaging material can be overcome. Conventionally, deconvolution technique has been used for the decomposition of superimposed UT signals, however it has disabilities when the waveform of the transmitted signal is distorted according to the propagation. In this paper, the wavelet transform based deconvolution(WTBD) technique is proposed as a new signal processing method that can decompose the superimposed echo signals with superior performances compared to the conventional deconvolution technique. WTBD method uses the wavelet transform in the pre-stage of deconvolution to extract out the common waveform from the transmitted and received signal with distortion. Performances of the proposed method we shown by through computer simulations using model signal with noise and we demonstrated by through experiments for the fabricated semiconductor sample with partial delamination at the top of silicon chip layer.

  • Although fake news has been present in human history at any time, nowadays, with social media, deceptive information has a stronger effect on society than before. This article answers two research questions, namely (1) Is the dissemination of fake news supported by machines through the automatic construction of filter bubbles, and (2) Are echo chambers of fake news manmade, and if yes, what are the information behavior patterns of those individuals reacting to fake news? We discuss the role of filter bubbles by analyzing social media's ranking and results' presentation algorithms. To understand the roles of individuals in the process of making and cultivating echo chambers, we empirically study the effects of fake news on the information behavior of the audience, while working with a case study, applying quantitative and qualitative content analysis of online comments and replies (on a blog and on Reddit). Indeed, we found hints on filter bubbles; however, they are fed by the users' information behavior and only amplify users' behavioral patterns. Reading fake news and eventually drafting a comment or a reply may be the result of users' selective exposure to information leading to a confirmation bias; i.e. users prefer news (including fake news) fitting their pre-existing opinions. However, it is not possible to explain all information behavior patterns following fake news with the theory of selective exposure, but with a variety of further individual cognitive structures, such as non-argumentative or off-topic behavior, denial, moral outrage, meta-comments, insults, satire, and creation of a new rumor.

  • Purpose : To evaluate value of superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) as a negative oral contrast agent in MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP). Materials and methods : Forty-eight patients with suspected biliary tract or pancreatic diseases and six healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. All MR images were obtained using a 1.5 T MR unit. MR-CP using fat-suppressed half-Fourier acquisition single-shot turbo spin echo (HASTE) and turbo spin echo (TSE) techniques were performed and reconstructed with maximal intensity projection (MIP). To determine the most optimal concentration of SPIO to obliterate the high signal intensity of water, a phantom experiment was conducted with various concentrations of SPIO-water mixture. Two radiologists evaluated pre- and postcontrast MRCPS. The contrast enhancement was assessed on the basis of loss of signal intensity in the stomach and duodenum. Results : In the phantom experiment, a significant increase of percentage of signal intensity loss (PSIL) occurred in concentration of 22.4 ugFe/ml (Feridex1 ml diluted with water 500 ml). Postcontrast MRCP showed an improved image quality compared with precontrast images. The rate of improvement in the diagnosis of diseases of the common bile duct and pancreatic duct was 25% (12/48). Conclusion : In patients with suspected biliary tract and pancreatic diseases, the SPIO is useful as a negative oral contrast agent for MRCP and provides an improvement of image quality.
