Practical Work in British School Science during the Second Half of the 19th Century

  • This study examines how practical work in science was introduced in British schools and became an important part of school science activities during the second half of the 19th century. Firstly, the establishment of a national education system in Britain is reviewed. Secondly, a general development of school science teaching is summarized with a special attention to students' enrollment in science subjects. Thirdly, the practical work in elementary schools are discussed in relation to the introduction of Object Lessons in curriculum. Then, the situations of practical work in science in secondary schools, particularly in Organized Science Schools and some famous public schools, are illustrated. Finally, the overall development until present days is critically discussed in relation to the types and aims of practical work in science.

과학 실험 실습 교육에서 초등 교사가 느끼는 딜레마 (Elementary Teachers' Dilemmas of Teaching Science Practical Work)

  • In their teaching practice, teachers encounter multi-dimensions of pedagogical challenges. The recognition and reflection on these challenges is crucial to advance our science teaching. This study looked into science teachers' dilemmas of their teaching practical work through their written cases. Dilemma cases are teachers' narratives organized around important events of teaching and learning. It can reveal teachers' situated cognition and be used as lens to investigate complex realities of science teaching and learning. 26 pre- and in-service elementary teachers' dilemma cases of science practical work were carefully collected and analysed to interpret what constitute tensions in elementary science practical works. They were largely grouped into three: Curriculum and Institutional Relevance, Students Relevance, Nature of School Experiments Relevance and divided into 7 subheadings: 'Authority of Curriculum(textbook)', 'Disappointment at external support', 'Students' interests and safety', 'Students' unscientific and inert attitude', 'Difficulty of showing expected results', 'Generalization through experiment', 'Knowledge acquisition and authentic inquiry'. Each dilemma was interpreted in terms of the tensions which constitute contradictory beliefs, values, expectation and realities. These dilemmas enabled to expose actual conditions of elementary science practical work and teachers' challenges otherwise can not be seen easily. Science teacher educators also can get some implications to overcome the gap between theory and practice in their teacher education.

A Study of Developing the Practical work Integrated the Course of Study in Upper Grades

  • Recently, the tendency for young people losing interest in science has accelerated. This tendency is remarkable for not only Japan but also some countries of Asia. It is thought that this tendency was brought from the decrease of the chance to watch the actual manufacturing activities, and the decrease of the real experience which children makes something in their childhood. In order to bring up the capable engineers on such a social background, making a product practice which promotes the understanding of the application of theory for manufacturing products is important in addition to study by the text book. In this study, some practical work materials for the lower grades in the college were developed. Integration of the developed materials and the course of study becomes an effective teaching method of the of subjects on a special field. Arranging this practical work on the learning process makes a high effect of the integrated practical work on the curriculum.

스마트폰의 특성이 개인의 업무성과에 미치는 영향과 혁신 저항성의 조절효과 (The Effect of Work Performance to Smart Phone's Characteristics and Moderated Effects of Innovation Resistance)

  • This study analyzed the effects of smart phone using for business on work performance in the field. We classified functional and practical aspects of smart phone affecting employee's work performance through former studies. As independent variables, we selected portability of equipment, rapidity of information and ease of use for functional side, and selected fit to work and subjective norms for practical side. And dependent variable was work performance. We also suggested that innovation resistance would be a moderator. The results showed that the effect of work performance was influenced by portability of equipment and fit to work. However, hypotheses on moderating effects of innovation resistance were not supported. This study made a discrimination in terms of an application phase of smart phone as against former studies. The results of this study will provide practical implications for related enterprises in the field to develop ways of using smart phone as an effective strategy.

초등 예비교사들이 과학 수업에서 겪는 어려움 (Pre-service Elementary Teachers Difficulties in Science Lessons)

  • The purpose of this study was to get an implication on teacher education program, by exploring the difficulties pre-service elementary teachers have with their science lessons. 37 pre-service teachers were requested to write an anecdote about their science lessons during their 4 week practicum. By analyzing these anecdotes, the difficulties were grouped into several categories by the researcher, and then reconfirmed by the pre-service teachers themselves. The result showed that there were far more difficulties with practical work (cases: 48), than with content knowledge teaching (cases: 17). Among practical work related difficulties, the most frequent cases were: 1) when they have unexpected result different from scientific theory (cases: 10), 2) when they teach process skill and usage of lab equipments (cases: 8), and 3) when they do not have enough preparation for practical work (cases: 7). Unlike the result of preceding research on secondary pre-service teachers, there was no affective aspect problems. These difficulties also can be divided into 'problems' and 'dilemmas'. Whereas 'problems' can be settled by removing obstacles, 'dilemmas', a conflict-filled situation, require choices between competing values or aims. The use of scientific language, the decision on the level and amount of knowledge they teach, and disposal of unexpected experiment results caused such dilemmas in science lessons. The research results imply practical work should be more strengthened in the elementary teacher education program. And both teacher educators and pre-service teachers need to understand that practical teaching is a complex enterprise accompanying some 'dilemmas'. The role of science teachers as managers of dilemmas could be considered.

대안적 비판이론으로서 인정 패러다임의 사회복지적 함의 (A Study on Implications of Recognition Paradigm for Social Work)

  • 후기 현대사회의 변화에 대응하려는 대안적 비판이론인 인정 패러다임은 이론과 실천 측면에서 사회복지에 많은 함의를 주고 있다. 인정이론의 주요 이론가인 Honneth와 Fraser의 논의를 중심으로 사회복지적 함의를 살펴보면 무엇보다 기존 비판이론이 가진 보편성을 개별 인간의 자기의식과 진정성으로 극복하고자 하는 Honneth의 이론은 사회복지의 본질적인 소명과 대상에 대한 매우 선명한 비전을 제시한다. 이와 달리 Fraser의 이원론적 정의론은 기존의 경제적 분배 위주의 정의관을 사회문화적 측면의 존중을 강조하는 인정개념을 통해 확장함으로써 현대사회의 부정의 창출구조에 대해 매우 다양하고 복합적인 대응전략을 제시한다. 하지만 사회복지에 대한 이러한 다양한 함의에도 불구하고 인정 패러다임은 사회복지적 차원에서 진정으로 인정이 의미하는 것은 무엇인지, 사회복지의 인정 대상은 과연 누구인지, 그리고 사회복지는 도대체 사회로부터 무엇을 인정받아야 하는지와 관련된 질문을 여전히 남기고 있다.

치과위생사 직업인식과 직무역량 강화방안 (Dental hygienist's job recognition and vocational competency reinforcement)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the qualities and problems to be solved to strengthen the vocational competency of dental hygienists and to identify the work to be institutionally established. Methods: From April 1 to May 30, 2019, a total of 325 people participated (152 registered dental hygienists: RDH, 173 students of dental hygiene: SDH) in this study. The survey items were as follows: "job awareness" (6 items), "problem to be solved to strengthen vocational competency" (5 items), "qualities to be equipped to strengthen"competency" (9 items), and "practical work to be institutionally established" (4 items). Results: RDH and SDH had the highest perception of professionalism (3.68, 3.99 points), and low remuneration against work (4.21, 4.18 points) was perceived as the most important problem to be solved. The qualities for competency reinforcement showed the highest results in expertise knowledge (4.68, 4.64 points) and vocation for job (3.76, 4.09 points). Practical work to be established institutionally appeared as follows: X-ray film reading, dental hygiene diagnosis, periodontal pocket measurement, and periodontal pockets (<6 mm) treatment. Conclusions: This study is expected to be actively used to strengthen the vocational competency among dental hygienists, construct work autonomy, and rationalize and legalize practical work.

실무중심 교육프로그램이 신규 간호사의 임상수행능력, 비판적 사고와 이직율에 미치는 영향 (Effects of a practical work-oriented education program on the ability of newly recruited nurses in execution of clinical competency, critical thinking and turnover rate)

  • 본 연구는 취업 전 간호대학생에게 적용된 실무중심 교육프로그램이 신규간호사의 임상수행능력, 비판적 사고와 이직율에 미치는 영향을 확인하고자 하였다. 실무중심 교육프로그램에 참여한 후 해당 병원에 취업한 간호사 와 실무중심 교육프로그램에 참여하지 않고 해당 병원에 취업한 간호사를 대상으로 실시한 단일군 전후설계 및 비동등성 대조군 사후설계 연구이다. 연구결과 취업 전 실무중심 교육프로그램에 참여한 간호사의 임상수행능력과 비판적 사고는 높게 나타났으며, 실무중심 교육프로그램에 간호사의 입사 후 1개월 이내 이직율은 감소하였다. 병원 취업 전 간호대학생때부터 실무중심의 교육프로그램을 운영하는 것이 중요하며 신규 간호사의 인적자원관리를 위해서 새롭게 시도한 실무중심 교육프로그램은 학교에서 학생의 임상실습 교과과정 개발과 병원에서 간호사 교육프로그램 개발 시 유용하게 활용할 수 있을 것이다.

나는 왜 그렇게 대처하였는가?: 초등 과학실험 수업 중 발생한 불일치 상황에서의 교사의 대처 (Why did I Cope with so?: A Teacher's Strategy to Cope with Anomalous Situations in Primary Practical Science Lessons)

  • This study explores how a teacher copes with anomalous situation in primary practical science lesson and what factors affect teacher's strategy to cope with anomalous situations. The method of auto-ethnography was used in order to capture the inner experience of the individual teacher. For this, one of the researchers participated in this study as the teacher participant. Two science lessons that the researcher taught as a teacher were observed by a co-author and video-recorded. However, only one lesson which the teacher experienced the anomalous situation was analyzed. After the lesson, self-interviews were conducted with the co-author. Also the researcher wrote four reflective journals about anomalous situations that she experienced. What has emerged in this study is that anomalous situations were experienced by the teacher while students were doing practical work and while students were presenting their results of practical work. As each anomalous situation was experienced in different contexts, the strategies that the teacher used were different and were affected not only by the personal epistemological belief but also by the socio-cultural context that the teacher was surrounded by. This study has implications to help teachers who have difficulties in coping with anomalous situations.
