Optimization of hydraulic section of irrigation canals in cold regions based on a practical model for frost heave

  • An optimal hydraulic section is critical for irrigated water conservancy in seasonal frozen ground due to a large proportion of water leakage, as investigated by in-situ surveys. This is highly correlated with the frost heave of underlain soils in cold season. This paper firstly derived a practical model for frost heave of clayey soils, with temperature dependent thermal indexes incorporating phase change effect. A model test carried out on clay was used to verify the rationality of the model. A novel approach for optimizing the cross-section of irrigation canals in cold regions was suggested with live updated geometry characterized by three unique geometric constraints including slope of canal, ratio of practical flow section to the optimal and lining thickness. Allowable frost heave deformation and tensile stress in canal lining are utilized as standard in computation iterating with geometry updating while the construction cost per unit length is regarded as the eventual target in optimization. A typical section along the Jinghui irrigation canal was selected to be optimized with the above requirements satisfied. Results prove that the optimized hydraulic section exhibits smaller frost heave deformation, lower tensile stress and lower construction cost.

Directions to Improve Specialized Knowledges and Practical Abilities for Taekwondo Majoring University Students (태권도 전공 학생들의 태권도에 대한 전문지식과 전문 실기 능력 향상을 위한 개선 방향)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify contents of Taekwon and to improve specialized knowledges and practical abilities for Taekwondo majoring university students. The sample was categorized into college and student. The first round survey was divided into two parts in finding possible ways to improve practical abilities from students and school authority perspectives. The second round was conducted through survey by dividing respondents into students and school authority. The third round was performed to identify the nessessities and problems in relation to specialized knowledge and practical abilities such as sparring, poomsae, and demonstration. Based on the findings, three critical themes were identified: motivating them to accumulate specialized knowledge, providing opportunities to practice, and offering diverse job directions. Students indicated several critical themes such as recognition of job opportunities in different domains, endeavour to increase communication ability with others in different domains, reconsideration to learn things in different domains, and efforts to take an interests in life-time Taekwondo. The findings provide ideas in applying practical knowledge into the field and in changing students' perception in terms of Taekwondo majoring. They are specialized knowledge and practical ability improvement based upon college authority and students (15 college authority items, 9 student items).

  • This treatise suggests the effective method for the dental laboratory technology teaching plan. It will present concrete practical steps for and audio-visual dental laboratory technology education approach. It will also help students to understand the dental laboratory theory and practice learned in the class and make use of it greatly in the field work. As follows: 1. Instructor should teach interestingly basic dental laboratory technology theory with illustrations and figures on the teaching method. 2. In practical traing class, instructor should teach every step, using audio-visual materials such as slides and video tapes/Instructor and his assist and should show an example to the students. 3. Instructor should make a standard and train the studtnes repeatedly until they come up to it. 4. Students should be skilled in every case through field work during their spare time and vacation. 5. Instructor should also teach job moral and manner to the students so that they can be adapted themselves to the social activities and be successful dental laboratory technician after graduation.

  • Recently as the advent of knowledge-based competition, the major industrialized countries including Korea, are expanding their R&D investment and promoting policies for diffusing of R&D performance. For this, NASA, DoD and such agencies in the United States define Technology Readiness Level (TRL) as a quantified indicator for performance management, and also impose Technology Readiness Assessment (TRA) as a evaluation system, that evaluates technology maturity using TRL. These tools are judged to be very effective in R&D projects especially with the object of practical use. When this concept is applied to the domestic national construction and transportation R&D project for the purpose of practical use, it is expected that the evaluation system overcomes its weakness of focusing only on academic results and improves significantly on intent of achieving practical use. Thus in this study, TRL/TRA implementation model of construction and transportation R&D project for achieving purpose of practical use is presented through an analysis of TRL/TRA concept and domestic national construction and transportation R&D project's characteristics and current evaluation/management system.

  • This paper is on the analysis of the survey results for the recognition of the practical engineering education among the engineering educators and educatees including alumni. After performing the survey, we classify 4 forms of practical engineering education, company-oriented, major-field-oriented, basic-engineering-knowledge-oriented and others. Also we survey what are necessary for the students to get employed. The survey results indicate that the respondents understand the practical engineering education as company-oriented and many of them also recognized basic-engineering-oriented engineering education. For the employment, the professors and the alumni focus on the personal character but the students feel that major field knowledge and the English ability are vital to the employment tests. Concerning the opinion for the students on the shortage of ability as an engineer, the professors respond the major field knowledge while the students and the alumni answer the English ability. This research produces some interesting results on the direction of practical engineering education, but needs more detailed and extended survey and analysis.

  • Information technology is rapidly diffused throughout the world. Unfortunately, as the technology goes on the disabled vocational rehabilitation is more isolated in physically and mentally. A new paradigm, 'Digital practical use Opportunity' is a product of the tremendous technological changes driving the disabled vocational rehabilitation. The employment for the disabled vocational rehabilitation is a hot issue. Because lack of education rehabilitation cause many problems for the employer. Relating program of employment and education for the disabled vocational rehabilitation, they can get a job in a better condition. This study propose a model of good environmental employment for the disabled vocational providing them the way of getting a job so that they can go as a member of highly developed society. It conducted in society could fundamentally advance our knowledge about the structure of the employment of the disabled vocational rehabilitation, cure their feelings, give them a chance to live happier, stronger, healthier.

Effects of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in Fashion Design Classes

  • In recent years, in order to enhance the problem-solving skills required by the industrial field, universities have introduced the Problem-Based Learning(PBL) method to solve the problems caused by the lack of creativity, problem solving ability and self-directed learning. This study applied PBL class methods such as 'learning based on individual specific problems', 'self-directed learning', and 'small-group learning of small members' to practical design of fashion design. To do this, I conducted a questionnaire after conducting research based on the PBL module for one semester in a practical class of fashion design major at P University. As a result of the survey, the satisfaction and achievement of the class conducted by PBL learning method was improved than the existing teaching method. As such, if PBL class is used as a way of solving problems through close communication between professors and learners, it is expected to be established as a learner-centered education method that can improve creativity and professionalism.
