According to David Hume, a deductive demonstration for inductive inference is not possible, because inductive inference is not deductive; and an inductive demonstration for inductive inference is not possible either, because such a demonstration is circular. Thus, on his view, there is no way of justifying inductive inference. Ever since Hume raised this problem of induction, a fair number of philosophers have tried to solve it. Nevertheless there is still no solution which is plausible enough to receive wide endorsement. According to Wilfrid Sellars, we cannot justify inductive inference by any theoretical reasoning; we can vindicate it only by a certain sort of practical reasoning. In this paper, I defend this Sellarsian proposal by developing and explaining it.
In this study, we identified the intellectual triggers for Bayesian inference and what key ideas contributed to its occurrence and discussed the practical implications of introducing Bayesian inference into the school mathematics curriculum by reflecting them. The results of the study show that the need for statistical inference about the parameter itself served as a trigger for the occurrence of Bayesian inference, and the most important idea for the occurrence of that inference was to regard the parameter itself as a probability variable rather than any fixed value. On the other hand, these research results suggest that the meaning of introducing Bayesian inference into the secondary mathematics curriculum is 'statistics education that expands the scope of uncertainty'.
This paper is aimed at proposing a fuzzy inference mechanism to enhancing the quality of cognitive map-based inference. Its main virtue lies in the two mechanisms: (1) a mechanism for avoiding a synchronization problem which is often observed during inference process with traditional cognitive map, and (2) a mechanism for fuzzifying decision maker's subjective judgment. Our proposed fuzzy inference mechanism (FIM) is basically based on the cognitive map stratification algorithm which can stratify a cognitive map into number of strata and then overcome the synchronization problem successfully. Besides, the proposed FIM depends on fuzzy membership function which is administered by decision maker. With an illustrative B2B negotiation problem, we applied the proposed FIM, deducing theoretical and practical implications. Implementation was conducted by Matlab language.
Currently, web applications are gaining in prevalence. In a web application, an input may not be appropriately validated, making the web application susceptible to cross-site scripting (XSS), which poses serious security problems for Internet users and websites to whom such trusted web pages belong. A taint inference is a type of information flow analysis technique that is useful in detecting XSS on the client side. However, in existing techniques, two current practical issues have yet to be handled properly. One is URL rewriting, which transforms a standard URL into a clearer and more manageable form. Another is HTML sanitization, which filters an input against blacklists or whitelists of HTML tags or attributes. In this paper, we make an analogy between the taint inference problem and the molecule sequence alignment problem in bioinformatics, and transfer two techniques related to the latter over to the former to solve the aforementioned yet-to-be-handled-properly practical issues. In particular, in our method, URL rewriting is addressed using local sequence alignment and HTML sanitization is modeled by introducing a removal gap penalty. Empirical results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method.

For a basic engineering education the confirmation and verification of the deductive Inference was studied and the principle of probability inference was applied. The background of introduction of deductive Inference and its test method was mentioned, and historic arguments on the compatibility of deductive statistical inference was summarized and analyzed. Philosophical arguments on the deductive confirmation for engineering experiments was introduced. Premise, procedure, and control of the experiments are studied. As an example of the deductive probability inference three groups of experimental data were used in order to find successful inferences respectively.

The purpose of this study is to explore the cases and features of the abductive inference used by young children when trying to explain natural phenomena in everyday life. From observing a 5-year-old's daily activities with his family, and analyzing the data according to the criterion extracted from the form of abductive inference described by C. S. Peirce, a few cases where the child used abductive inferences to explain natural phenomena were found. The abductive inferences in the cases were conducted: (a) based on figural resemblance and behavioral resemblance (b) under the influence by individual belief and communal belief, then (c) resulted in new categorization accompanied by over generalization. Such features of the abductive inference showed the 'double faces'; sometimes encourages and sometimes discourages children's generating better scientific hypotheses and explanations. These results suggest that even young children use abductive inference to explain doubtful natural phenomena in everyday life, although we need to consider carefully with the double aspects of the features of abductive inference for the practical applications to the fields of science education. Finally, several suggestions and following studies for science education are proposed.

This paper presents hardware scheme of fuzzy inference engine, based on α-level set decomposition of fuzzy sets for fuzzy control of DC servo system. We propose a method which is directly converted to PWM actuating signal by a one body of fuzzy inference and defuzzification. The influence of quantity α-levels on input/output characteristics of fuzzy controller and output response of DC servo system is investigated. It is concluded that quantity α-cut 4 give a sufficient result for fuzzy control performance of DC servo system. The experimental results shows that the proposed hardware method is effective for practical applications of DC servo system.
Information spread in networks is universal in many real-world phenomena such as propagation of infectious diseases, diffusion of a new technology, computer virus/spam infection in the internet, and tweeting and retweeting of popular topics. The problem of finding the information source is to pick out the true source if information spread. It is of practical importance because harmful diffusion can be mitigated or even blocked e.g., by vaccinating human or installing security updates. This problem has been much studied, where it has been shown that the detection probability cannot be beyond 31% even for regular trees if the number of infected nodes is sufficiently large. In this paper, we study the impact of an anti-information spreading on the original information source detection. We consider an active defender in the network who spreads the anti-information against to the original information simultaneously and propose an inverse Voronoi partition based inference approach, called Voronoi Inference to find the source. We perform various simulations for the proposed method and obtain the detection probability that outperforms to the existing prior work.

In order to overcome the problems with first generation expert systems at the symbol level, recently various knowledge level development techniques of second generation expert systems have been proposed. But, these techniques are conceptual modelling techniques. This paper modifies and complements these conceptual modelling techniques and proposes a Task Object Modelling (TOM) technique as a practical knowledge level expert system development technique. This paper defines a Task Object(TO) as a knowledge unit consisted of a goal, execution conditions, behaviour knowledge, and so on. And, we define a Task Object Diagram(TOD) to depict structual, dynamic, and functional aspects of TO easily. We also define Inference Types as basic units to describe behaviour knowledge of TOs. In order to utilize the proposed TOM technique as not a simple conceptual modelling technique but a practical second generalion expert system development technique, we implement a TOD editor, a TO editor, and TO processing algorithm based on the state of TOs. Also we implement a Inference Types Library, in which each inference type is corresponded to an IRE(Jntelligent Rules Element) method, to transform the defined inference types into IRE methods automatically.

To enhance the practical usage of solely quantitative evaluation method for each students on the current public education fields which might cause some social problems, an intelligent and adaptive fuzzy logical inference methodology for the additional qualitative evaluation technique is proposed to utilize each students personal characteristic properties to be evaluated. Proposed method uses some verbal descriptions for the linguistic qualifier in addition to the grade points. An imaginary virtual experimentation only has been implemented due to some difficulties with the critical national educational policy problems in the case of some possibly real and practical experimental environments to be utilized for the simulation.
