  • Since histopathological examination was known to be the most sensitive evaluation for testicular toxicity, regulatory authorities have been published the guidelines on practical testicular assay approach. Those guidelines specified details of evaluation including fixation, embedding, stain-ing, histological examination and also seminiferous tubular staging methods. However, there have been confusing understanding among toxicologists and even pathologists on staging theory and its application on industrial testicular toxicity. Guidelines did not intend to conduct quantitative assay with staging but recommended the use of knowledge of staging. To count each tubular stage with statistical analysis is known to be time consuming and labor burdening work but the significance of toxicity has little value. It also has been pointed out that the application of staging theory for longer-term toxicity considered to be lacking of rationale. It could be recommended that qualitative assay with aware-ness of germ cell loss is more efficient method rather than quantitative counting of each tubular stage. Therefore it would be required that comprehensive understanding of testicular toxicity evaluation and the use of testicular staging method.

  • Objective: To assess the practical utility of pleural fluid carbonic anhydrase XII (CAXII) quantification for differential diagnosis of effusions. Materials and Methods: Fluid was collected prospectively from fifty patients presenting with lymphocytic pleural effusions for investigation and CAXII was quantified by ELISA. Results: Pleural fluid CAXII concentrations were significantly higher in lung cancer patients (n=30) than in tuberculous controls (n=20). The sensitivity and specificity of this biomarker were 60%and 75%, respectively. CAXII measurement was not inferior to cytological examination in the diagnosis and exclusion of pleural effusions from lung cancer patitents (sensitivity 60% vs. 57%; specificity 75% vs. 100%; positive predictive value 77%; negative predictive value 54%). In patients with negative cytology, it offered a sensitivity of 54%. Conclusions: Pleural fluid CAXII is elevated in pleural effusions from lung cancer patients. Measurement of CAXII may be used in the future as a valuable adjunct to cytology in the diagnostic assessment of patients with pleural effusions related to lung cancer, especially when cytological examination is inconclusive.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of BSE education and practice on knowledge, self efficacy and performance in female nursing students. Method: The subjects consisted of 40 students from 2 nursing colleges. They responded to questionnaires that included knowledge, self-efficacy and performance of BSE within a 3-month interval. The experimental group was subjected to a 90 minute-educational session. Their knowledge of BSE was measured using Choi's tool and self-efficacy was measured using Champion and Scott. Result: Self-efficacy and frequency of BSE performance in the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group while BSE knowledge was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusion: Nursing students don't put their knowledge into practice. This fact suggests that changing a behavior needs something more than knowledge. In this study, the BSE education had an effect on self-efficacy and performance. Therefore, practical education needs to be reinforced for nursing students to perform BSE for their own health and to be able to demonstrate it for clients.

  • Professional Engineers for Building Electrical Facility is required to have both theoretical background and field experiences as an expert for managing a building electrical facility. In order to cultivate many Professional Engineers with both theoretical and practical basis, it is necessary to analyze the past examinations and develop an efficient cultivating plan. In this work, we analyzed the tendency of past and recent 4 year's examinations and the relation of examinations to the university curriculum. We suggest some methods that supplement the gap between curriculums of universities and qualification tests. Also, this paper introduces some advanced education programs of the reeducation agencies for these areas.

  • The objective of this study is to prepare the effective management plan of environmental noise with a noise map, and the guideline on the management plan of environmental noise was suggested through the review of existing application examples. The management plan of environmental noise with a noise map includes the practical contents in the stages of subdivision of management areas, establishment of reduction measures, opinion collection, post investigation, and reformulation of management plan. First, the classification of management regions is performed considering the excess degree of noise standard and the facility type in the phase of subdivision of management areas. Second, the optimal management plan is established through the investigation of regional characteristics and various noise reduction measures in the phase of establishment of reduction measures, which includes the examination of noise reduction effects with a noise map and the budget planning with the costing of noise reduction measures. Third, the opinion survey with a local resident and a expert is carried out in order to prove the validity of the management plan in the phase of opinion collection, and the management plan is modified with gathered opinions. Fourth, the post examination plan with noise measurement is performed in order to verify the real effect of noise reduction measures according to the management plan in the phase of post investigation. Finally, the amendment of the management plan as well as the improvement of a noise map is carried out at a regular cycle in the phase of reformulation of management plan.

  • We investigate the resistance of Cryptosporidium (C.) parvum oocysts to commercial bleach treatment. The viability and infectivity of C. parvum oocysts suspended in 100, 50, 25, 12.5, 6.3 or 3.2% aqueous commercial bleach for 10, 30, 60, 120 or 180 min at room temperature were assessed by nucleic acid Syto-9 staining, histologic examination of ileum and infectivity to immunosuppressed neonatal C57BL/6N mice. Although the viability was decreased compared with normal oocysts, all oocysts in contact with serially diluted commercial bleach for 180 min were alive by nucleic acid dye Syto-9 staining. And, microscopic examination of ileum sections revealed developmental stages of C. parvum in all mice. The oocyst shedding patterns between mice infected with oocysts contacted with commercial bleach and normal control mice were not significantly different each other. Although commercial bleach is widely used as a bacterial and viral disinfectant, the present findings indicate that it is not an effective disinfectant for C. parvum oocysts under practical conditions. Authors conclude that, therefore, it is undesirable to recommend commercial bleach as a disinfectant for C. parvum oocysts.

  • This paper studied earthworm populations in fields under practical cultivation in the Eastern Harzforeland (Germany). The examined sites differed insignificantly in their climatic and soil conditions. The examination was a comparison between a field and a narrow edge or meadow. A combination of Oktett method and handsortin was used. The five different habitates seven earthworm species were discoverd. The most frequently foundd were A. rosea, A. caliginosa, and A. chlorotica. There were clear differences in species between the habitates of each site. Generally the edge or the meadow contained one (Zoeberitz) or two (Zscherben) more species than the field. The composition of species differed between 1990 and 1992. In the dry Autumn of 1991 there were less species found at both sites. The occurance of earthworm species depends on the weather. Moisture influencing similiarity of abundance and bio-mass were recorded in three out of four habitates. Starting on a high level in Autumn 1990 the abundance as well as biomass decreased until Autumn 1991 and increased the following year. The number from 1990 were never reached again during the examination. One year of normal precipita-tion was not enough to return the population to the beginning level. Great differences in the number of earthworms between the compared habitats suggest that the edges and meadows are a potential immigration source into a field which is poor on earthworms. Structrues of distribution near the edge refer to a migration from a high populated edge into an almost empty field.

  • Purpose: Safety pin ingestion is common in some regions of the world and may lead to severe morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to present some practical suggestions for ingested safety pins using an accompanying algorithm, presented for the first time in the literature to the best of our knowledge. Methods: Twenty children with ingested safety pins during a 4-year period were retrospectively included in the study. Results: Median age of patients was 9.5 months (interquartile range, 6.3-14 months), and 70% were girls. On endoscopic examination, safety pins were observed in the stomach (25%), duodenal bulb (20%), upper esophagus (15%), middle esophagus (10%), and second part of the duodenum (10%) but were not observed in 20% of the cases. Safety pins were removed using endoscopy in 15 cases (75%). In four cases (20%), no safety pin was observed on endoscopic examination. In one case (5%) involving a 6-month-old infant, the safety pin could not be removed although it was observed using endoscopy. No surgical intervention was needed for any patient. No complications such as perforation or deaths developed, except for erosions, due to the foreign body removal procedure. Conclusion: Safety pins are easily removed endoscopically. The best option is to remove the safety pin using endoscopy while it is still in the esophagus and stomach. For this reason, endoscopic procedures should be performed as soon as possible in children who have ingested safety pins.
