  • In the present study, the performance characteristics of a centrifugal air compressor were investigated experimentally. The PC controlled performance test facility for a centrifugal air compressor driven by an electric motor with a gear box to achieve higher compressor rotating speed was set up in the present study. The performance test for a turbocharger compressor of a diesel engine was conducted, and in a case of 34,800 rpm, pressure ratio 1.18, flow rate 0.09kg/s, compressor efficiency 61% were investigated. Adiabatic power for a tested compressor showed maximum value at mass flow ratio 0.8. The value of mass flow ratio of maximum efficiency was about 0.37, it was independent of compressor rotating speed.

  • The present study investigates the convective heat/mass transfer characteristics in wavy ducts of a primary surface heat exchanger. The effects of duct aspect ratio and flow velocity on the heat/mass transfer are investigated. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the corrugated duct sidewall are determined using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The aspect ratios of the wavy duct are 7.3, 4.7 and 1.8 with the corrugation angle of $145\Omega$. The Reynolds numbers, based on the duct hydraulic diameter, vary from 300 to 3,000. The results show that at the low Re(Re $\leq$ 1000) the secondary vortices called Taylor-Gortler vortices perpendicular to the main flow direction are generated due to effect of duct curvature. By these secondary vortices, non-uniform heat/mass transfer coefficients distributions appear. As the aspect ratio decreases, the number of cells formed by secondary vortices are reduced and secondary vortices and comer vortices mix due to decreased aspect ratio at Re$\leq$1000. At Re >1000, the effects of corner vortices become stronger. The average Sh for the aspect ratio of 7.3 and 4.7 are almost same. But at the small aspect ratio of 1.8, the average Sh decreases due to decreased aspect ratio. More pumping power (pressure loss) is required for the larger aspect ratio due to the higher flow instability.

  • Simplified approach has been adopted for the prediction of the thermal behavior of CANDU reactor core during power transients. Based on the assumption that the ratio of mass flow rate for each core channel does not vary during the transient, quasy-steady state analysis technique is applied with predicted core inlet boundary conditions(total mass flow rate and specific enthalpy). For restricted transient case, the presented method shows functionally reasonable estimation of core thermal behavior which could be implemented in the fast running reactor simulation program.

  • In order to suppress the structural vibration more effectively, Multiple Tuned Mass Damper(MTMD) which is composed of a number of Tuned Mass Damper(TMD) can be used. Especially, the passive MTMD has several advantages over active TMD like easy installment and maintenance, cost and performance for power failure situation(severe damage of power lines from earthquake), etc.. For this purpose the mass and damping ratio of MTMD and the distributed frequency range which shows the range of MTMD's distribution are used as main design parameters. When the passive MTMD is constituted with multiple cantilevers, the facility in its real production and its need for only a smaller space can be named as its several advantages. In this study, the satisfactory results were obtained from the composition of MTMD utilizing dynamic characters of cantilevers, and the verification was done by the comparison of the analysis from MTMD with the computer simulation.

  • The power cycle using ammonia-water mixture as a working fluid is a possible way to improve efficiency of the system of low-temperature source. In this work thermodynamic performance of the ammonia-water regenerative Rankine cycle with partial-boiling flow is analyzed for purpose of extracting maximum power from the source. Effects of the system parameters such as mass fraction of ammonia, turbine inlet pressure or ratio of partial-boiling flow on the system are parametrically investigated. Results show that the power output increases with the mass fraction of ammonia but has a maximum value with respect to the turbine inlet pressure, and is able to reach 22 kW per unit mass flow rate of source air at $180^{\circ}C$.

  • For safe operation of nuclear power plants, a loose-part monitoring system (LPMS) is used to detect and locate loose-parts within the reactor coolant system, and to estimate their mass and damage potential. There are several methods to estimate mass, such as the center frequency method based on the Hertz's impact theory, a frequency ratio method and so on, but it is known that these methods cannot provide accurate information on impact response for identifying the impact source. Thanks to increasing computing power, finite element analysis (FEA) method recently become an available option to calculate reliably impact response behavior. In this paper, a finite element analysis model to simulate the propagation behavior of the bending wave, generated by a metal ball impact, is validated by performing a series of impact tests and the corresponding finite element analyses for flat plate and shell structures. Also, a FEA-based metal sphere signal map is developed, and then blind tests are performed to verify the map. This study provides an accurate simulation method for predicting the metal impact behavior and for building a metal sphere signal map, which can be used to estimate the mass of loose-parts on site in nuclear power plants.

  • This paper discusses the electromagnetic and mechanical design considerations to improve the design accuracy and power to mass ratio of multi-stack axial flux permanent magnet synchronous generator (AFPMSG). Design accuracy of multi-stack AFPMSG for direct drive wind turbine application is improved by considering magnetic flux leakages and fringing effect. FEM structural analysis is utilized to increase power to mass ratio of three-stack AFPMSG by reducing the rotor yoke thickness considering magnetic and centrifugal forces and Von Mises stress distribution.

  • In this paper, the design of Centrifugal Compressor which is used in sizes 50 horse power has 8 pressure ratio and numerical analysis of the flow within compressor varying tip clearance length are performed. To get high pressure ratio with low power the exit height of impellers is low but compressor has very high speed of revolution. So compressor has high specific speed although mass flow rate is very small. The shape of impellers at the first stage is carried out. Flow and performance characteristics of impellers has been analyzed by using a commercial CFD program, $Fine^{TM}$/turbo. The result shows that loss coefficient is affected by tip clearance length and compressor has proper tip clearance length. It is possible to decrease loss by selecting apt tip clearance length.

  • In this study, we investigated the ion energy distributions in a chlorine based inductively coupled plasma by quadrupole mass spectrometer with an electrostatic ion energy analyzer. Ion energy distributions are presented for various plasma parameters such as $BCl_3/Ar$ gas mixing ratio, RF power, and process pressure. As the $BCl_3/Ar$ gas mixing ratio and process pressure decreases, and RF power increases, the saddle-shaped structures is enhanced. The reason is that there are ionized energy difference between $BCl_3$ and Ar, change of plasma potential, alteration of mean free path. and variety of ion collision in the sheath.

  • thermodynamic cycle analysis has been performed for the power generation systems to utilize the cold energy of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The power cycle used the air or water at room temperature as a heat source and the LNG at cryogenic temperature as a heat sink. Among manypossible configurations of the cycle. the open Rankine cycle. and the closed Brayton cycle, and the closed Rankine cycle are selected for the basic analysis because of their practical importance. The power output per unit mass of LNG has been analytically calculated for various design parameters such as the pressure ratio. the mass flow rate. the adiabatic efficiency. the heat exchanger effectiveness. or the working fluid. The optimal conditions for the parameters are presented to maximize the power output and the design considerations are discussed. It is concluded that the open Rankine cycle is the most recormmendable both in thermodynamic efficency and in practice.
