  • Currently, as the requirement for high quality Internet access from anywhere at anytime is consistently increasing, the interconnection of pure ad hoc networks to fixed IP networks becomes increasingly important. Such integrated network, referred to as hybrid ad hoc networks, can be extended to many applications, including Sensor Networks, Home Networks, Telematics, and so on. We focus on some data communication problems of hybrid ad hoc networks, such as broadcasting and routing. In particular. power failure of mobile terminals is the most important factor since it affects the overall network lifetime. We propose an energy-efficient routing protocol based on clustering for hybrid ad hoc networks. By applying the index-based data broadcasting and selective tuning methods, the infra system performs the major operations related to clustering and routing on behalf of ad hoc nodes. The proposed scheme reduces power consumption as well as the cost of path discovery and maintenance, and the delay required to configure the route.

  • We propose the PAD (Power Aware Data-centric Routing Protocol), which finds minimum energy routes and prolongs network life-time, for the data-centric sensor networks. Firstly, the PAD discovers the minimum energy Property graph by removing redundant communication links. The proposed a1gorithm to find the minimum energy property graph is faster, simpler and easier to implement than existing aIgorithms. Secondly, the PAD runs the DDBF (Distributed Data-centric Bellman-Ford Algorithm) to determine routing paths between a base node and all sensor nodes. The DDBF selves the drawbacks of the distributed bellman-ford algorithm, i.e. slow convergence and a possible cyclic routing path. Since the PAD is a fully distributed algorithm with low overhead, it can be used in various kinds of resource limited sensor network applications.

  • Interference-aware routing protocol design for underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) is one of the key strategies in reducing packet loss in the highly hostile underwater environment. The reduced interference causes efficient utilization of the limited battery power of the sensor nodes that, in consequence, prolongs the entire network lifetime. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient interference-aware routing (EEIAR) protocol for UWSNs. A sender node selects the best relay node in its neighborhood with the lowest depth and the least number of neighbors. Combination of the two routing metrics ensures that data packets are forwarded along the least interference paths to reach the final destination. The proposed work is unique in that it does not require the full dimensional localization information of sensor nodes and the network total depth is segmented to identify source, relay and neighbor nodes. Simulation results reveal better performance of the scheme than the counterparts DBR and EEDBR techniques in terms of energy efficiency, packet delivery ratio and end-to-end delay.

  • Ad hoc networks play an important role in mobile communications, and the performance of nodes has a significant impact on the choice of communication links. To ensure efficient and secure data forwarding and delivery, an intelligent routing protocol (IAODV) based on learning method is constructed. Five attributes of node energy, rate, credit value, computing power and transmission distance are taken as the basis of segmentation. By learning the selected samples and calculating the information gain of each attribute, the decision tree of routing node is constructed, and the rules of routing node selection are determined. IAODV algorithm realizes the adaptive evaluation and classification of network nodes, so as to determine the optimal transmission path from the source node to the destination node. The simulation results verify the feasibility, effectiveness and security of IAODV.

  • Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) are similar to the terrestrial sensor networks. Nevertheless, there are different characteristics among them such as low battery power, limited bandwidth and high variable propagation delay. One of the common major problems in UWSNs is determining an efficient and reliable routing between the source node and the destination node. Therefore, researchers tend to design efficient protocols with consideration of the different characteristics of underwater communication. Furthermore, many routing protocols have been proposed and these protocols may be classified as location-based and location-free routing protocols. Pressure-based routing protocols are a subcategory of the location-free routing protocols. This paper focuses on reviewing the pressure-based routing protocols that may further be classified into non-void avoidance protocols and void avoidance protocols. Moreover, non-void avoidance protocols have been classified into single factor based and multi factor based routing protocols. Finally, this paper provides a comparison between these protocols based on their features, performance and simulation parameters and the paper concludes with some future works on which further study can be conducted.

  • Despite several years of intense research, the security and cryptography in wireless sensor networks still have a number of ongoing problems. This paper describes how identification (ID)-based node authentication can be used to solve the key agreement problem in a three-layer interaction. The scheme uses a novel security mechanism that considers the characteristics, architecture, and vulnerability of the sensors, and provides an ID-based node authentication that does not require expensive certificates. The scheme describes the routing process using a simple ID suitable for low power and ID exposure, and proposes an ID-based node authentication. This method achieves low-cost communications with an efficient protocol. Results from this study demonstrates that it improves routing performance under different node densities, and reduces the computational cost of key encryption and decryption.

  • In this paper, we propose a newly energy-efficient routing protocol, which is called Maximum Utility Routing(MUR), in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) so as to investigate the minimum energy and maximum lifetimes issues together. We present a utility-based framework so as to meet various incompatible constraints simultaneously and fairly. To explore this issue, we use the concepts and mathematics of microeconomics and game theory. Though simulation results, we show that our routing scheme has much better performance especially in terms of network efficiency, network lifetime, and average power consumption.

  • For the wireless mesh networks, efficient routing protocol is required to transmit data from source to destination node through multi-hop transmission. Multipath routing enable the stable data transmission even in the case of traffic congestion or unstable link. In this paper, we propose partial multipath routing which does not make a full multipath but partial for some parts of unstable links. This partial multipath routing reduce the number of nodes for routing and minimized the required power.

  • In the Ad-hoc networks, the limitation on the availability of power for operation is a significant bottleneck, given the requirements of portability, weight, and size of mobile devices. Hence, the use of routing metrics that consider the capabilities of the power sources of the network nodes contributes to the efficient utilization of energy. This paper presents a QoS routing protocol that minimize the power consumed by a packet in traversing from source node to the destination node. Results obtained of simulation show that, with our approach we can reduce the power consumption of nodes and increases the life time of the network.
