  • The performance simulation program on the turboprop engine(PT6A-62), which is a main engine of the first trainer KT-1 in republic of Korea, was developed. Characteristics of engine components were required for the steady-state performance analysis including on and off design point analysis. In most cases, these were substituted for what scaled from well known engine components characteristics with the scaling law. The developed program was compared with CASTURB program which is well known for the simulation performance analysis, such as analysis results of mass flow rate, compressor pressure ratio, fuel flow rate, power, specific fuel consumption ratio and turbine inlet temperature in the following four cases, to evaluate whether the developed program is acceptable or not. The first case was the sea level static standard condition and other cases were considered with various flight Mach numbers, altitudes. After verifying the developed program, the partload performance analysis was carried out. Transient performance analysis for various fuel schedules were performed. When the fuel step increase of 0.1sec was performed, the overshoot of the compressor turbine inlet temperature occurred. However, the fuel ramp increase for longer than 0.1sec time was performed, the overshoot could be eliminated.

  • This paper presents a computational model of a gas foil journal bearing with shim foils between the top foil and bumps, and predicts its static and dynamic performance. The analysis takes the previously developed simple elastic foundation model for the top foil-bump structure and advances it by adding foil models for the "shim foil" and "outer top foil." The outer top foil is installed between the (inner) top foil and bumps, and the shim foil is installed between the inner top foil and outer top foil. Both the inner and outer top foils have an arc length of $360^{\circ}$, but the arc length of the shim foil is shorter, which causes a ramp near its leading edge in the bearing clearance profile. The Reynolds equation for isothermal and isoviscous ideal gas solves the hydrodynamic pressure that develops within the bearing clearance with preloads due to the ramp. The centerline pressure and film thickness predictions show that the shim foil mitigates the peak pressure occurring at the loading direction, and broadens the positive pressure as well as minimum film thickness zones except for the shortest shim foil arc length of $180^{\circ}$. In general, the shim foil decreases the journal eccentricity, and increases the power loss, direct stiffness, and damping coefficients. As the shim foil arc length increases, the journal eccentricity decreases while the attitude angle, minimum film thickness, and direct stiffness/damping coefficients in the horizontal direction increase.

  • Most hard disk drives that apply the ramp load/unload technology unload the heads at the outer edge of the disk while the disk is rotating. The load/unload includes the benefits as like an increased areal density, a reduced power consumption and an improved shock resistance. A lot of papers investigating the effects of the various load/unload parameters such as a suspension tab, a limiter, a ramp and air-bearing surface designs have been published. However, in previous researches, an effect of the suspension is not considered at each load/unload step. In this paper, we focus that a variation of the state matrix affects the load/unload performance on based on a state matrix that is a stiffness matrix of the suspension. Because the state matrix is related to the suspension at each load/unload step, to change the state matrix means the structural change of the suspension. Therefore, we investigated a range of a pitch static attitude(PSA) and a roll static attitude(RSA) for load/unload performance. We also analyzed an effect of the variation of the state matrix a range of load/unload velocity occurred a slider-disk contact. We determined the variation of the state matrix to improve the load/unload performance through comparison of each factor of state matrix.

  • An efficient fast response hysteretic buck converter suitable for mobile application is propoesed. The problems of large output ripple and difficulty in using of small power inductor that conventional hysteretic converter has are improved by adding ramp generator. and the changeable switching frequency with load current is fixed by adding a delay time control circuit composed of PLL structure resulting in decrease of EMI noise. The circuits are implemented by using BCDMOS 0.35um 2-polt 4-metal process. Measurement results show that the converter operates with a switching frequency of 1.85MHz when drives 80mA load current. As the converter drives over 170mA load current, the switching frequency is fixed on 2MHz. The converter has output ripple voltage of less 20mV and more than efficiency 85% with 50~500mA laod current condition.

  • Design of X-band frequency FMCW based imaging radar with multi-resolutions and performances of the self-manufactured radar system are presented in this study. In order to implement the multi-bandwidths, a ramp sequence of the FMCW signal is consisting of two kinds of 'saw-tooth' waveform with different bandwidth, and a receiver circuit consisting of L-band source and frequency converter circuit is used to effectively extract spectra of beat-frequency from the received signal of X-band frequency. The system setups for performance measurement of self-manufactured radar system are maximum output power of 35 dBm, sampling frequency of 1.2 MHz and sweep time of 1 ms. Then, the measured resolutions of the modulated signal having bandwidth of 500 MHz and 300 MHz in range & azimuth-direction are (0.28 m, 0.26 m) and (0.44 m, 0.27 m), respectively.

  • Waves progressing into the coastal area can be amplified, swashed and overtopped by a wave overtopping control structure, and it converts the kinetic energy of the waves to the potential energy with a hydraulic head above the mean sea level by conserving the overflow in a reservoir. Then the potential energy in the form of hydraulic head can be converted to electric power utilizing extremely low-head hydraulic turbine. This study aims to find the most optimal shape of wave overtopping structure which maximizes overtopping volume rate of sea water. Laboratory experiments for the performance evaluation of wave overtopping control structures were carried out in three dimensional wave tank, and the three dimensional structure models with planar wave concentration shapes(B/b) were manufactured into five classes, which were optimized by cross sectional parameters of the structure, ie, length of ramp(l), gradient of inclined ramp($cot{\phi}$) and freeboard height of the wave overtopping structure($h_e$) proposed by Shin and Hong(2005). The wave overtopping discharges were investigated with 20 incident wave conditions and wave directions of $0^{\circ},\;15^{\circ},\;30^{\circ}$.

  • The design of the integrated quench protection (QP) system for the high current superconducting magnet (SCM) has been fabricated and tested for the toroidal field (TF) coil system of the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) device. The QP system is capable of protecting the TF SCM, which consists of 16 identical coils serially connected with a stored energy of 495 MJ at the design operation level at 35.2 kA per turn. Given that the power supply for the TF coils can only ramp up and maintain the coil current, the design of the QP system includes two features. The first is a basic fast discharge function to protect the TF SCM by a dump resistor circuit with a 7 s time constant in case of coil quench event. The second is a slow discharge function with a time constant of 360 s for a daily TF discharge or for a stop demand from the tokamak control system. The QP system has been successfully tested up to 40 kA with a short circuit and up to 34 kA with TF SCM in the second campaign of KSTAR. This paper describes the characteristics of the TF QP systems and test results of the plasma experiment of KSTAR in 2009.

  • The EAST ICRF system operating space has been extended in power and phase control with a low-level RF system for the new double-strap antenna. Then the multi-step power and periodic phase scanning experiment were conducted in L-mode plasma, respectively. In the power scanning experiment, the stored energy, radiation power, plasma impedance and the antenna's temperature all have positive responses during the short ramp-ups of PL;ICRF. The core ion temperature increased from 1 keV to 1.5 keV and the core heating area expanded from |Z| ≤ 5 cm to |Z| ≤ 10 cm during the injection of ICRF waves. In the phasing scanning experiment, in addition to the same conclusions as the previous relatively phasing scanning experiment, the superposition effect of the fluctuation of stored energy, radiation power and neutron yield caused by phasing change with dual antenna, resulting in the amplitude and phase shift, was also observed. The active control of RF output facilitates the precise control of plasma profiles and greatly benefits future experimental exploration.

  • Electrical treeing phenomenon, regarded as pre-breakdown which accelerates aging process leading an insulation to the complete breakdown, is with no doubt extremely fatal to the performance of the insulation. Investigated in this paper is electrical treeing representing local dielectric failure according to flow pattern, the flow history of liquid polyethylene formed during the extrusion process. Experiments of electrical tree initiation by means of ramp tests were conducted using newly developed electrode system with point-to-point structure. Constant voltage tests were also carried out with the electrode system to estimate the life time of the insulation. Results were analyzed using statistical method such as Weibull distribution.

  • Plastic and creep deformations of solder joints during thermal cycling are the main factors of misalignments and power losses in optical telecommunication components. Furthermore, the increased mismatch between solder Joint-bonded areas may cause severe failure in the components. Darveaux's creep model was implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to simulate creep response of solder. Based on the finite element results, thermal fatigue reliability was predicted by using various fatigue life prediction models. Also, the effects of ramp conditions, dwelling time, and solder joint-embedding materials on the reliability were investigated under the thermal cycling conditions of the Telcordia schedule (-40∼75$^{\circ}C$).
