This paper presents a high performance burnable absorber named as CIMBA (Cylindrically Inserted and Mechanically Separated Burnable Absorber) for the soluble-boron-free SMR. The CIMBA is the cylindrical gadolinia inserted into the annular fuel pellets. Although the CIMBA utilizes the spatial self-shielding effect of the fuel material, a large reactivity upswing occurs when the gadolinia is depleted. To minimize the reactivity swing of the CIMBA-loaded FA, two approaches were investigated. One is controlling the spatial self-shielding effect of the CIMBA as burnup proceeds by a multi-layered structure of the CIMBA (ML-CIMBA) and the other is the mixed-loading of two different types of CIMBA (MIX-CIMBA). Both approaches show promising performances to minimize the reactivity swing, where the MIX-CIMBA is more preferable due to its simpler fabrication process. In conclusion, the MIX-CIMBA is expected to accelerate the commercialization of the CIMBA and can be used to achieve an optimal soluble-boron-free SMR core design.
As the realization of carbon neutrality has been a main assignment for coping with the global climate change, it became necessary to analyze upcoming changes in electricity mix with economic and technical viewpoints. This paper presents a newly-developed simulation model that reflects the daily intermittency of renewable energy by applying daily average power supply-demand patterns for each season. Also, the paper provides an economic analysis in the viewpoint of investment cost, annual cost and power generation cost by utilizing the calculations from the simulation model. Four scenarios are selected for the analyses, one based on the Korean Government's 2050 Carbon Neutrality Scenario and three Nuclear Power Build-up scenarios, which are newly suggested by the authors. The simulation results show that the increase of nuclear energy from 5.7% of Government's Scenario to 37.7% of the proposed Nuclear Power Build-up Scenario leads to the decrease of about 704 billion US$ in investment cost and about 181 billion US$ in annual cost; with reduction in the increase of 2050 expected generation cost from 3.1 to 1.6 times compared with the referenced 2021 average cost. Further, this study has significance in performing the economic analysis with the expected daily power supply-demand patterns in 2050.
In this paper an estimation method is proposed to find reasonable load factor of the power system based on the conventional generation mix concept. To find the factor investment costs and operation costs are considered in the estimation. To use feasible results both supply side and demand side of views should be considered. But as a first step of this study only the generation mix is considered in this study.
The new approach using fuzzy linear programming with fuzzy multi-criterion is proposed for the best generation mix of a power system. A chracteristic feature of the presented approach is that not only cost but also reliability for goal function can be taken into account by using fuzzy multi-criterion and so more realistic solution can be obtained. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by the best generation mix problem of KEPCO-system size model which contains nuclear, coal, LNG, oil and pump-generator hydro plant in multi-years.
This paper presents the economic impact of consumer participation in Real-Time Pricing (RTP). A computer model was developed to analyze the impact of real-time pricing on the average price, electricity sales, and the social welfare. Four revenue reconciliation alternative were introduced to illustrate the effect of RTP. Finally a case study was done to analyze the consequent impact of the dynamic load profile on the long-term fuel mix, and the results were compared with those of $5^{th}$ national power development plan.
As coal fly ash emissions have increased due to additional constructions of domestic heat power plants, the amount of embedded reject ash (Rj henceforth) is increasing as well. Most Rj is embedded, so if it is used as an alternative admixture instead of cement, embedded quantities will decrease, leading to economic and environmentally positive effects. Therefore this study conducted an experiment to contemplate the usability of Rj ground in the Los Angeles abraser, and what effects ground Rj has on the engineering properties of poor-mix mortar. The result was that as the number of grinding turns increased, liquidity, air quantity and intensity were improved, proving Rj a possible alternative admixture to cement.
The marine industry contributes a large proportion of the air pollutant emissions along coastal regions, and this air pollution has been strongly linked to cardiovascular diseases and other illnesses. To alleviate the problem, many ports have installed alternative maritime power (AMP) facilities that enable onboard marine auxiliary engines with generators (gensets) to be shut down while a ship is at berth. This study compared the emissions from conventional gensets with those from AMP facilities, focusing on four emission types: greenhouse gases (GHG), sulphur oxides (SOX), nitrogen oxides (NOX), and particulate matter (PM). Both direct (combustion / operation) and indirect (upstream) emissions were considered together for the emission comparison. The results showed that AMP has lower emissions than conventional onboard gensets, and this benefit is highly dependent on the electricity generation mix onshore. On average, GHG emissions could be reduced by about 18.3 %, while the other emissions (SOX, NOX, and PM) would decrease more dramatically (88.4 %, 90.1 %, and 91.5 %, respectively). Additionally, future benefits of the AMP would increase due to the expansion of renewable energies. Thus, this study supports the potential of AMP as a promising solution for environmental concerns at ports worldwide.
The purpose of this study is to provide the optimum mix design of concrete to be placed at the face slab concrete in CFRD(Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam) for pumped storage power plants. The basic performance tests including compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, flexural strength and the control properties of crack including plastic shrinkage, drying shrinkage were conducted for concrete using fly ash and polypropylene fiber. From this study, the fly ash concrete represented the better results in the aspects of basic performance, control properties of crack and economy than ordinary portland cement concrete. Especially the concrete mix design containing 20% of fly ash is recommended to be applied in the construction of the face slab concrete in CFRD for pumped storage power plants.
The purpose of this study is to provide the optimum mix design of fly ash concrete to be placed at the concrete face rockfill dam for pumped storage power plats. The basic performance tests including compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, unit weight, coefficient of thermal expansion, shrinkage, adiabatic temperature rise and analysis of thermal stress were conducted for fly ash concrete. From this study, the fly ash concrete represented the better results in the aspects of basic performance and economy than ordinary portland cement concrete. Especially the concrete mix design containing 15% of fly ash is recommended to be applied in the construction of the concrete face rockfill dam for pumped storage power plants.
