In order to increase the power density of power converters, reduction of the switching losses at high-frequency switching conditions is one of the most important issues. This paper presents a new gate drive circuit that enables the reduction of switching losses in both the Power MOSFET and the IGBT. A distinctive feature of this method is that both the turn-on loss and the turn-off loss are decreased simultaneously without using a conventional ZVS circuit, such as the quasi-resonant adjunctive circuit. Experimental results of the switching loss of both the Power MOSFET and the IGBT are shown. In addition, an energy recovery circuit suitable for use in IGBTs that can be realized by modifying the proposed gate drive circuit is also proposed. The effectiveness of both the proposed circuits was confirmed experimentally by the buck-chopper circuit.
To apply HTS to AC devices, it is necessary that study theoretically and experimentally to analyze the AC losses. It should be investigated the theoretical mechanisms precede the actual experiments. Because the AC losses cause some complicated troubles in AC machines, we can design the machines properly. In this study, firstly we analyze the basic cause of AC losses by investigating the several loss factors, secondly measure the AC losses of HTS by using Magnetization. Technique and this results show that AC losses of HTS is tenuous than those of general materials used in power system. Consequently we can compare the actual results with the theoretical results. And we find that AC losses of HTS are related to the amplitude of external magnetic field and the frequency. Through this study, we find that it is possible to apply the results by Magnetization. Technique to the AC power system, to the design of AC machine, to design of HTS proper to the foretold AC losses.
In this paper, we present an analytical method that provides fast and efficient evaluation of the conversion efficiency for switching power supplies. In the proposed method, the conduction losses are evaluated by calculating the effective values of the ideal current waveform first and incorporating them into an exact equivalent circuit model of the switching power supply that includes all the parasitic resistances of the circuit components. While the winding losses and core losses are accurately accounted for the magnetic components, the skin and proximity effects are assumed to be negligible in order to simplify the analysis. The validity and accuracy of the proposed method are verified with experiments on a prototype active-clamped forward converter with synchronous rectification. An excellent correlation between the experiments and theories are obtained for the input voltages of 36-75 V with 4-6 MOSFETs employed for the synchronous rectification.
The paper proposes a simple method to calculate the portion of real power losses of transmission lines allocated to individual loads. The method is implemented by defining loss distribution factors, and analyses the loads shares in the transmission line losses. The paper also performs calculation of sensitivities of the line losses with respect to load changes so as to be easily employed in on-line applications. Effectiveness of the algorithm is verified by computer simulations and it is estimated that the results can be used to compute the cost of one ancillary service under deregulated environment in electric power industries.
Traditionally electric power system are operated in such a way that the total fuel cost is minimized regardless of accounting for tie-lines transmission constraint and emissions produced. But tie-lines transmission and emissions constraint are very important issues in the operation and planning of electric power system. This paper presents the Two-Phase Neural Network(TPNN) to solve the Economic Load Dispatch (ELD) problem with tie-lines transmission and emissions constraint considering transmission losses. The transmission losses are obtained from the B-coefficient which approximate the system losses as s quadratic function of the real power generation. By applying the proposed algorithm to the test system, the usefulness of this algorithm is verified.
Superconducting synchronous generators and motors are designed based on 2 dimensional electro-magnetic approach. In the case of generator, if the machine output rating and terminal voltage are decided the armature rating current will be decided automatically according to its power factor. However, in the case of motor, if the output rating is given with [hp] or [kw] units, the armature terminal voltage and current are not decided directly because the machines armature input power and mechanical output are different by way of losses. So in order to calculate the armature current more accurately. the machine losses must be included in the design procedure. In this paper the machine loss of superconducting motor are analyzed and used for decision of the armature input power and current. Moreover, the differences of voltage equations between superconducting synchronous generator and motor are considered.
This paper investigates analytical models of Conduction and Switching Losses (CASLs) of a matrix-Z-source converter (MZC). Two analytical models of the CASLs are obtained through the examination of operating principles for a Z-source inverter and ac-dc matrix converter respectively. Based on the two models, the analytical model of CASLs for a MZC is constructed and visualized over a range of exemplified operating- points, each of which is defined by the combination of power factor (pt) and modulation index (M). The model provides a measurable way to approximate the total losses of the MZC.

The power flow calculations are the most important and powerful tools in the various studies of power system engineering. Newton-Raphson method, among the various power flow calculation techniques, is normally used due to its rapidness of numerical convergency. In the conventional Newton-Raphson method, however, there are some unrealistic assumptions, in which all the system power losses are considered to be supplied by the slack bus generator. Introducing the system power loss formula and augmenting the conventional Newton-Raphson power flow method, we can relieve the unrealistic assumption and improve the performance of power flow calculation. In this study, A new approach for handling the losses and augmenting the conventional power flow problem is proposed. The proposed method estimates the increamental changes of active power on each generation bus with respect to the change of total system power losses and the estimated value are used to update the slack bus power. If some studies for more theoritical investigations and verifications are followed, the proposed approach will show some improvement of the conventional method and give lots of contribution to increase the performance of power flow techniques in power systems engineering.
To achieve high efficiency in high power and high frequency applications, reduction of switching losses and noise is very important. In this paper, an improved soft switching forward converter is proposed. The proposed converter is constructed by using non-dissipative snubbers in parallel with the main switch and output diode of the conventional forward converter. Due to the use of the non-dissipative snubbers in the primary and secondary, the proposed converter achieves zero-voltage and zero-current switching for all switching devices without switching losses and output diode recovery losses. The complete operating principles, theoritical analysis, experimental results will be presented.
