  • A fast optimization algorithm has been evolved from a simple two stage optimal power flow(OPF) algorithm for constrained power economic dispatch. In the proposed algorithm, we consider various constraints such as power balance, generation capacity, transmission line capacity, transmission losses, security equality, and security inequality constraints. The proposed algorithm consists of four stages. At the first stage, we solve the aggregated problem that is the crude classical economic dispatch problem without considering transmission losses. An initial solution is obtained by the aggregation concept in which the solution satisfies the power balance equations and generation capacity constraints. Then, after load flow analysis, the transmission losses of an initial generation setting are matched by the slack bus generator that produces power with the cheapest cost. At the second stage we consider transmission losses. Formulation of the second stage becomes classical economic dispatch problem involving the transmission losses, which are distributed to all generators. Once a feasible solution is obtained from the second stage, transmission capacity and other violations are checked and corrected locally and quickly at the third stage. The fourth stage fine tunes the solution of the third stage to reach a real minimum. The proposed approach speeds up the coupled LP based OPF method to an average gain of 53.13 for IEEE 30, 57, and 118 bus systems and EPRI Scenario systems A through D testings.

  • This paper presents a new single phase front-end ac-dc bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) rectifier topology. The proposed converter achieves a high efficiency over a wide range of input and output voltages, a high power factor, low line current harmonics and both step up and step down voltage conversions. This topology is based on a non-inverting buck-boost (Zeta) converter. In this approach, the input diode bridge is removed and a maximum of one diode conducts in a complete switching period. This reduces the conduction losses and the thermal stresses on the switches when compare to existing PFC topologies. Inherent power factor correction is achieved by operating the converter in the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) which leads to a simplified control circuit. The characteristics of the proposed design, principles of operation, steady state operation analysis, and control structure are described in this paper. An experimental prototype has been built to demonstrate the feasibility of the new converter. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the improved power quality at the AC mains and the lower conduction losses of the converter.

  • In this paper, analytical techniques for performance characteristics analysis of wind power generator with outer permanent magnet rotor are proposed. Furthermore, the proposed analytical techniques are validated by performance experiments of the manufactured generator. In this part, characteristic equations of losses such as copper loss, core loss are derived. Using the derived loss characteristic equations, electrical parameters obtained in [15] and d-q axes method, constant load and constant speed characteristics of wind power generator are analyzed. And then, to analyze performance of wind power system according to wind speed, d-q analysis model considering wind turbine characteristics is proposed. Finally, the obtained performance characteristics results are validated in comparison with those by experiments.

  • The efficiency of solar cell was about 4[%] in initial stage of photovoltaic industry, but it has quite a lot of efficiency through technology advances. Today, the efficiency of c-Si solar cells is about 17 to 19[%] and the efficiency of PV modules is about 14 to 15 [%]. We called that electrical losses occurred in the Conversion of solar cells to PV modules are CTM loss(Cell To Module loss), the CTM loss typically has a value of about3~5[%]. The more efficiency of solar cell increase, differences are larger because the efficiency decrease owing to physical or technical problems occurred in the Conversion of solar cells to PV modules. In this study, the power loss factors occurred in the Conversion of solar cells to PV modules are analyzed and it is proposed that how to reduce losses of the PV module. The types of power loss factor are (1)losses of front glass and encapsulant(generally EVA sheet), (2)losses by sorting miss, (3)losses by interconnection, (4)losses by the field aging of PV modules. In further study, experimental and evaluation will be conducted to make demonstrate for proposed solutions.

  • In this paper, the effect of pulse width modulation methods on thermal loadings and power losses of single-phase five-level NPC inverters for photovoltaic systems are analyzed. The pulse width modulation methods affect the power losses of the NPC inverters and thus lead to different thermal loadings of NPC inverters. To identify the reliability-critical power device with respect to thermal stress, the thermal loadings of I- and T-type NPC inverters are analyzed by applying the unipolar pulse modulation method. Then, the effect of the discontinuous pulse width modulation method on power losses and thermal loadings of power devices of I- and T-type NPC inverters are analyzed. Finally, the operation of NPC inverters applying the discontinuous pulse modulation method is confirmed by experiments. The results show that the discontinuous pulse modulation method is able to improve the reliability of NPC inverters by reducing thermal loadings of reliability-critical power devices and it is more effective for T-type NPC inverters than I-type NPC inverters.

  • This paper analyzes the losses of the switching device for a full bridge inverter connected to the grid. As the development of power conversion system, losses are dominant factors in judging the efficiency of a system. The losses of a switching device can be divided into switching loss and conduction loss, both of which can be estimated by analyzing periodic switching waveform. The switching loss is generated when the switch is turned on and off, while the conduction loss is generated when the switch is turned on. The estimated losses of the MOSFET switch are compared with the simulation results.

  • Experimental data are presented which describe heat losses of cavity type receiver in wind tunnel. Experiments are conducted at various conditions such as the heater temperature in cavity changes from 300, 400, and 500 oC, wind speed in tunnel from 2 to 8 m/s, and four different tilt angle of 30, 50, 70, 90o. The power consumption including temperature, voltage and current for each experimental conditions are measured and stored in data logger at everyone second interval. The experimental results show that heat losses increase with increasing wind speed and with tilt angle. However, heat losses for the tilt angle of 70 and 90o is almost same at each heater temperature. In addition, the effects of natural convection in combined convection heat losses vary in according to the tilt angle.

  • The paper proposes a method calculate the allocations of real power losses in transmission lines to individual loads based on loss distribution factors and compares them with those using marginal loss factors. The proposed method is implemented by defining loss distribution factors and analysing the individual loads' shares in the transmission line losses. Computer simulations on a 9-bus sample system verify effectiveness of the algorithm proposed and give an assertion that it is desirable to allocate power losses to loads using loss distribution factors rather than based on marginal loss factors.

  • Stoichiometric combustion in spark ignition (SI) engines has an advantage of meeting future stringent emission regulations. However, the drawback of the combustion is a lower thermal efficiency than that of lean burn. In this study, energy losses in a natural gas stoichiometric SI engine generator were analyzed to establish a strategy for improving the generating efficiency (GE). The energy losses were investigated based on dynamometer and load bank experiments. As the intake manifold pressure increased in the dynamometer experiment, the brake thermal efficiency (BTE) increased mainly due to the reduction in the pumping and mechanical losses. In the load bank experiment, the generating power and GE increased with the increased intake manifold pressure. The generating power and GE were lower than the brake power and BTE due to the cooling fan power and the losses in the generator.
