  • Many efforts have focused on the improvement of power density and efficiency by downsizing the motor and inverter. Recently, Toyota, Honda, and GM realized that the compact-sized motor uses the hairpin structure with increased space factor. Reducing the maximum torque from high-speed technique also makes it possible to design the high-power density model. Toyota and Honda used the newly developed power semiconductor IGBT to decrease conduction loss for high-efficiency inverter. In particular, Toyota used the boost converter to increase the DC link voltage for high efficiency in low-torque high-speed region. Toyota and GM also used the double-sided cooling structure for miniaturization of inverter for high-power density.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to develop a static equivalent model of an inverter-based distributed energy resource (DER), where the model is used for a steady-state fault analysis of a power grid. First, we introduce the characteristics of an inverter-based DER as well as its general configuration. Then, we derive the equivalent model of the DER on the basis of the characteristics. Last, the performance of the proposed method is proven by the results of computer simulations.

Single-Stage Half-Bridge Electronic Ballast Using a Single Coupled Inductor

  • This paper proposes a single-stage half-bridge electronic ballast with a high power factor using only a single coupled inductor. Compared to conventional high power factor electronic ballasts, the proposed ballast is a simpler circuit with a low cost and a high reliability. The proposed ballast is made up of a power-factor-correction (PFC) circuit and a self-oscillating class-D inverter. The PFC and inverter stages of the proposed ballast are simplified by sharing only a single coupled inductor and two common switches. The proposed PFC circuit can achieve a high power factor and low voltage stresses of the switches. A saturable transformer in the self-oscillating class-D inverter determines the switching frequency of the ballast. Experimental results obtained on a 30W fluorescent lamp are discussed.

  • Power can be generated from either renewable or non-renewable sources. Renewable sources are liked to maintain a strategic distance from contamination emanation and rely on upon fossil energizes which is decreasing day by day. The proposed sun powered vitality transformation unit comprises of a sun oriented exhibit, Bidirectional DC-DC converter, single stage inverter and AC. The inverter changes over DC control from the PV board into AC power and offered it to the heap which is associated with the lattice. The photovoltaic sun powered vitality (PV) is the most direct approach to change over sunlight based radiation into power and depends on the photovoltaic impact.   • The 800-kW PM (permanent magnet) synchronous generator is developed as a wind power generator. The matching converter is designed to control the torque and power depending on the wind speed regime. The generator starts to generate the power at the speed of 9 rpm and the rated output is generated at the speed of 25 rpm. The rated output power of an inverter is 750 kW when the PM synchronous generator is delivering 800 kW to the inverter. The inverter is specially designed to perform the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) at the low wind speed regime that is typical wind environment in Korea. The inverter test was done with a 2 MW M-G system at KERI (Korea Electric Research Institute). The M-G set has a 2 MW motor driver and a 38:1 gear to match the speed between the motor and the PM generator. The torque simulating the wind is applied to the PM generator by a DC motor. The test results show the inverter efficiency of $94.3\%$ at the rated power generating condition. The measured values show that the MPPT algorithm is working well. Overall reliability will be verified through the long-term site test.

  • In this paper, the operation principle of a bi-directional switch type resonant AC link snubber circuit was described, together with the practical design procedure, which employs in the proposed power module bridge package type resonant AC link snubber. The novel prototype of power module bridge package type resonant AC link snubber-assisted voltage type sinewave soft switching PWM inverter using IGBT power module was demonstrated herein. It was verified that both the auxiliary power switches in this resonant AC link snubber circuit and the main power switches commutate under the condition of soft switching commutation principle. In addition, the power losses of the new soft switching inverter treated here were analyzed by implementing the experimental data of the IGBT and diode v-i characteristics in addition to switching power loss characteristics into our original computer simulation software developed by the authors. Then, the voltage type sinewave soft switching PWM inverter was high efficiency than that of hard switching PWM inverter, along with performance operation waveforms. In the future, the comparative feasibility study of power module bridge type resonant AC link snubber and its related soft switching inverter in addition to the other types resonant snubber assisted soft switching inverter should be done from a practical point of view.

  • A new three phase three-level Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Switched Voltage Source (SVS) inverter with zero neutral point potential is proposed. It consists of three single-phase inverter modules. Each module is composed of a switched voltage source and inverter switches. The major advantage is that the peak value of the phase output voltage is twice as high as that of a conventional neutral-point-clamped (NPC) PWM inverter. Thus, the proposed inverter is suitable for applications with low voltage sources such as batteries, fuel cells, or solar cells. Furthermore, three-level waveforms of the proposed inverter can be achieved without the switch voltage imbalance problem. Since the average neutral point potential of the proposed inverter is zero, a common ground between the input stage and the output stage is possible. Therefore, it can be applied to a transformer-less Power Conditioning System (PCS). The proposed inverter is verified by a PSpice simulation and experimental results based on a laboratory prototype.

  • This paper describes two novel current fed high frequency resonant inverter can be used as the power supp]y for wax-sealing. This two topology can be obtained higher output frequency than switching frequency by composing modified unit inverter based on conventional half-bridge serial resonant inverter in parallel with input power source. also, By using time-sharing gate control method, this proposed inverter can not only realize the output control of dependence irrespective of the switching frequency using phase-shift but also reduce switching loss because it has ZVS function. Simulation results through the Pspice have demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed inverter. This proposed inverter will be able to be practically used as a power supply in various fields as induction heating applications, DC-DC converter etc.

  • This paper proposes a two-stage step-down buck and a tapped-inductor boost cascaded converter for high efficiency photovoltaic micro-inverter applications. The proposed inverter is a new structure to inject a rectified sinusoidal current into a low-frequency switching inverter for single-phase grid with unity power factor. To build a rectified-waveform of the output current. the converter employs both of a high efficiency step-up and a step-down converter in cascade. In step-down mode, tapped inductor(TI) boost converter stops and the buck converter operates alone. In boost mode, the TI converter operates with the halt of buck operation. The converter provides a rectified current to low frequency inverter, then the inverter converts the current into a unity power-factor sinusoidal waveform. By applying a TI, the converter can decrease the turn-on ratios of the main switch in TI boost converter even with an extreme step-up operation. The performance validation of the proposed design is confirmed by an experimental results of a 120W hardware prototype.
