The main objective of load frequency control (LFC) is to keep the frequency value at nominal value and force deviation of the frequency to zero in case of load change. This paper suggests LFC by using a model predictive control (MPC), based on Integral Square Error (ISE) method designed to optimize the damping of oscillations in a two-area power system. The MPC is designed and simulated with a model system in state space, for robust performance in the system response. The proposed MPC is tuned by ISE to achieve superior efficiency. Moreover, its performance has been assessed and compared with the PI and PID conventional controllers. The settling time and overshoot with MPC are extremely minimized as compared with conventional controllers.
In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive damping controller based on radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), which can infinitely approximate to nonlinear system, is proposed for thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC). The proposed TCSC adaptive damping controller can not only have the characteristics of the conventional PID, but adjust the parameters of PID controller online using identified Jacobian information from RBFNN. Hence, it has strong adaptability to the variation of the system operating condition. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is tested on a two-machine five-bus power system and a four-machine two-area power system under different operating conditions in comparison with the lead-lag damping controller tuned by evolutionary algorithm (EA). Simulation results show that the proposed damping controller achieves good robust performance for damping the low frequency oscillations under different operating conditions and is superior to the lead-lag damping controller tuned by EA.
This study described the experimental investigations of combustion instability in a model gas turbine combustor. Strong coupling between pressure oscillations and unsteady heat release excites a self-sustained acoustic wave, which results in a loud and annoyed sound, and may also lead to a structural damage to the combustion system. In this study, in order to examine the combustion instability phenomenon of a dual swirling combustor configuration, the information of heat release and pressure fluctuation period with respect to the variation in both thermal power and combustor length was collected experimentally. As a result, the fundamental acoustic frequency turned out to increase with the increasing thermal power without respect to the combustor length. The frequency response to the combustor length was found to have two distinct regimes. In a higher power regime the frequency significantly decreases with the combustor length, as it is expected from the resonance of gas column. However, in a lower power regime it is almost insensitive to the combustor length. This insensitive response might be a result of the beating phenomenon between the interacting pilot and main flames with different periods.

This paper presents an UPFC (Unified Power Flow Controller) model for stability study using PSS/E. The proposed UPEC model was implemented by IPLAN which is a high level language. As a control strategy for damping electromechanical oscillations, energy function method was adopted. By the adopted control law, the damping effect is robust with respect to loading condition, fault location and network structure. Furthermore, the control imputs are based on local signals. The effect of control of the UPFC model was demonstrated on an one machine infinite bus system and a two area system.
Competitive electricity markets necessitate equitable methods for allocating transmission usage in order to set transmission usage charges and congestion charges in an unbiased and an open-accessed basis. So in competitive markets it is usually necessary to trace the contribution of each participant to line usage, congestion charges and transmission losses, and then to calculate charges based on these contributions. A UPFC offers flexible power system control, and has the powerful advantage of providing, simultaneously and independently, real-time control of voltage, impedance and phase angle, which are the basic power system parameters on which sys-tem performance depends. Therefore, UPFC can be used efficiently and flexibly to optimize line utilization and increase system capability and to enhance transmission stability and dampen system oscillations. In this paper, a mathematical approach to allocate the contributions of system users and UPFCs to transmission system usage is presented. The paper uses a dc-based load flow modeling of UPFC-inserted transmission lines in which the injection model of the UPFC is used. The relationships presented in the paper showed modified distribution factors that modeled impact of utilizing UPFCs on line flows and system usage. The derived relationships show how bus voltage angles are attributed to each of changes in generation, injections of UPFC, and changes in admittance matrix caused by inserting UPFCs in lines. The relationships derived are applied to two test systems. The results illustrate how transmission usage would be affected when UPFC is utilized. The relationships derived can be adopted for the purpose of allocating usage and payments to users of transmission network and owners of UPFCs used in the network. The relationships can be modified or extended for other control devices.
600MW(e) CANDU Primary Heat Transport System (PHTS) is composed of the two “figure-of-eight” loops and is designed to operate with the 4% Reactor Outlet Header (ROH) quality at its rated power. This existence of the two compressible regions and the positive flow-qualitly-void feedbacks are the sources of the PHTS flow instability. To ensure the PHTS stability, ROH-ROH interconnect pipes are installed as passive systems. This paper describes the investigation of the PHTS flow instability at its design full power condition. Also studied are the interconnect effect and the inherent system damping effect on the system stability. The time domain stability analyses are accessed by using the ATHER/MOD-I code which is the improved version of the KAERI developed ATHER code. Under the most adverse system modelling, the “figure-of-eight” symmetric loop shows divergent flow oscillations. Under with the interconnect, the PHTS stability is remarkably enhanced so that the system becomes stable. However, even under the conservative pressurizer modelling, the PHTS shows the more convergent flow oscillations. With the interconnect and the pressurizer modelling, its stability is highly credited. Conclusively, the inherent system damping by pressurizer itself can credit the PHTS stability without the interconnect.

Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is necessary for photovoltaic (PV) power system application to extract the maximum possible power under changing irradiation and temperature conditions. The β-parameter-based method has many advantages over conventional MPPT methods; such advantages include fast tracking speed in the transient stage, small oscillations in the steady state, and moderate implementation complexity. However, a problem in the implementation of the conventional beta method is the choice of an appropriate scaling factor N, which greatly affects both the steady-state and transient performance. Therefore, this paper proposes a modified β-parameter-based method, and the determination of the N is discussed in detail. The study shows that the choice of the scaling factor N is determined by the changes of the value of β during changes in irradiation or temperature. The proposed method can respond accurately and quickly during changes in irradiation or temperature. To verify the proposed method, a photovoltaic power system with MPPT function was built in Matlab/Simulink, and an experimental prototype was constructed with a solar array emulator and dSPACE. Simulation and experimental results are illustrated to show the advantages of the improved β-parameter-based method with the optimized scaling factor.

A 25kW-class polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell system has been developed for the propulsion of a leisure boat. The fuel cell system was designed to satisfy various performance requirements, such as resistance to shock, stability under rolling and pitching oscillations, and durability under salinity condition, for its marine applications. Then, the major components including a 30kW-class PEM fuel cell stack, a DC-DC converter, a seawater cooling system, secondary battery packs, and balance of plants were developed for the fuel cell system. The PEM fuel cell stack employs a unique design structure called an anodic cascade-type stack design in which the anodic cells are divided into several blocks to maximize the fuel utilization without hydrogen recirculation devices. The performance evaluation results showed that the stack generated a maximum power of 31.0kW while maintaining a higher fuel utilization of 99.5% and an electrical efficiency of 56.1%. Combining the 30-kW stack with other components, the 25kW-class fuel cell system boat was fabricated for a leisure. As a result of testing, the fuel cell system reached an electrical efficiency of 48.0% at the maximum power of 25.6kW with stable operability. In the near future, two PEM fuel cell systems will be installed in a 20-m long leisure boat to supply electrical power up to 50kW for propelling the boat and for powering the auxiliary equipments.

This paper deals with a powerful countermeasure for power quality problems caused by the operation of electrical arc furnace in bulk power systems. The rapid active load fluctuations of electrical arc furnace could produce several problems such as voltage flicker and active power oscillations. The typical methods using only the reactive power compensation have their own limitation in solving the power quality problems caused by active load variations. The coordination of both active and reactive power compensation is required to solve the power quality problems. This paper focuses on the impacts and the dynamic phenomena caused by the active load fluctuation. This paper proposes the optimal algorithm for the active power compensation based on the function of 1(n ratio and the concepts for the active power compensation. The results from a case study show that the proposed methods can be a practical tool for the power quality problems in power systems.
In this paper, an algorithm using two bi-quad filters to suppress the wide-band resonance for PMSM servo systems is proposed. This algorithm is based on the double bi-quad filters structure, so it is named, "double bi-quad filter." The conventional single bi-quad filter method cannot suppress unexpected mechanical terms, which may lead to oscillations on the load side. A double bi-quad filter structure, which can cancel the effects of compliant coupling and suppress wide-band resonance, is realized by inserting a virtual filter after the motor speed output. In practical implementation, the proposed control structure is composed of two bi-quad filters on both the forward and feedback paths of the speed control loop. Both of them collectively complete the wide-band resonance suppression, and the filter on the feedback path can solve the oscillation on the load side. Meanwhile, with this approach, in certain cases, the servo system can be more robust than with the single bi-quad filter method. A step by step design procedure is provided for the proposed algorithm. Finally, its advantages are verified by theoretical analysis and experimental results.
