  • Condition based maintenance(CBM) for the preventive diagnosis of important equipments related to safety or accident in power plant is essential by using the suitable methods based on actual power plant conditions. To improve the reliability and accuracy of the measured value at the minute leak situation, and also to monitor continuously internal leak condition of power plant valve, the development of a diagnosis and monitoring technique using multi-measuring method should be performed urgently. This study was conducted to estimate the feasibility of multi-measuring method using three different methods such as acoustic emission(AE) method, thermal image measurement and temperature difference$({\Delta}T)$ measurement that are applicable to internal leak diagnosis for the power plant valve. From the experimental results, it was suggested that the multi-measuring method could be an effective way to precisely diagnose and evaluate internal leak situation of valve.

  • Acoustic emission technology is applied to diagnosis the internal leak and operating conditions of the major valves at nuclear power plants. The purpose of this study is to verify availability of the acoustic emission as in-situ diagnosis method. In this study, acoustic emission tests are performed when the pressurized high temperature steam flowed through gate valve(1st stage reheater valve) and glove valve(main steam dump valve) on the normal size of 4 and 8". The valve internal leak diagnosis system for practical field was designed. The acoustic emission method was applied to the valves at the site, and the background noise was measured for the abnormal plant condition. To improve the reliability, a judgment of leak on the system was used various factors which are AE parameters, trend analysis, signal level analysis and RMS(root mean square) analysis of acoustic signal emitted from the valve operating condition internal leak.

  • Nuclear power plants has a number of valves, which are operating at a high temperature-high pressure and radiation environment conditions. Nevertheless, it is important to maintain the reliability of the valves to ensure safe operation of the nuclear power plant. However, the aging of the valves by increasing of years of plant operation and the system transients due to the sudden load change are working the failures of the reliability of the valve. In this paper, we evaluate experimentally the performance change according to the thermal aging of the valve. Results show that the valve stem and the actuator leakages were enlarged by the thermal aging.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify availability of the acoustic emission in-situ monitoring method to the internal leak and operating conditions of the turbine major valves relating to safety for turbine operating and prevention of turbine trouble at nuclear power plants. In this study, acoustic emission tests are performed when the pressurized electro-hydraulic control oil flowed through turbine electro-hydraulic controller oil check valve and turbine power/trip fluid solenoid valve in the condition of actual turbine operating. The acoustic emission method was applied to the valves at the site, and the background noise was measured far the abnormal plant condition. To judge for the leak existence ell the object valves, voltage analysis and frequency analysis of acoustic signal emitted from infernal leak in the valve operating condition are performed. It was conformed that acoustic emission method could monitor for valve internal leak to high sensitivity.

  • To verify the system performance of portable AE leak diagnosis system which can measure with moving conditions, AE activities such as RMS voltage level, AE signal trend, leak rate degree according to AE database, FFT spectrum were measured during operation on total 11 valves of the secondary system in nuclear power plant. AE activities were recorded and analyzed from various operating conditions including different temperature, type of valve, pressure difference, valve size and fluid. The results of this field study are utilized to select the type of sensors, the frequency band for filtering and thereby to improve the signal-to-noise ratio for diagnosis for diagnosis or monitoring of valves in operation. As the final result of application study above, portable type leak diagnosis system by AE was developed. The outcome of the study can be definitely applied as a means of the diagnosis or monitoring system for energy saving and prevention of accident for power plant valve. • A steam control valve is used to control the flow from the steam generator to the steam turbine in thermal and nuclear power plants. During startup and shutdown of the plant, the steam control valve is operated under a partial flow conditions. In such conditions, the valve opening is small and the pressure deference across the valve is large. As a result, the flow downstream of the valve is composed of separated unsteady transonic jets. Such flow patterns often cause undesirable large unsteady fluid force on the valve head and downstream pipe system. In the present study, various flow patterns are investigated in order to understand the characteristics of the unsteady flow around the valve. Experiments are carried out with simplified two-dimensional valve models. Two-dimensional unsteady flow simulations are conducted in order to understand the experimental results in detail. Scale effects on the flow characteristics are also examined. Results show three types of oscillating flow pattern and three types of static flow patterns.

  • High temperature and pressure valves in power plant have been used for fluid flowing and leakage occurred owing to valve internal damage such as disc wear, crack and inserting of foreign objects etc. in these valves. Recently, multi-measuring technique applied both ultrasonic and acoustic method have been used for evaluation of valve internal leakage in order to raise measurement reliability. Therefore, we have performed various leakage tests using ultrasonic and acoustic measuring system and acquired leakage data for the various leakage conditions. In this study, we developed the estimation method of regression model through leakage data, and expectation method for valve opening ratio, which is directly proportion to leakage rate, using the established estimation model from the measured data, valve size and fluid pressure so as to enhance data reliability. As a result of this study, it was founded that expectation method of leakage rate by statistical analysis method is appropriate to valve leakage evaluation.

  • The reliable operation of a swing check valve in the main feed water system of a power plant is most essential for successful shout-down process. A failure to close the valve at proper time often leads to the instability of the main feed water system, or even to an emergency stop of the power plant. In reality it is a very difficult task to monitor the behavior of a swing check valve. Furthermore it is impossible to see the motion of the valve. In this work two measurements were carried out simultaneously to determine the precise valve closure time. The dynamic pressure measurements were made at the inlet and outlet regions of the swing check valve. The transient vibration of the valve housing in the direction of water flow was also measured, which enabled the measurement of the transient vibration of the valve housing near valve closure. By comparing the results produced from these measurements the precise valve closure time could be determined. By carrying out order tracking technique using the dynamic pressure signals and pump rpm signal, the complicated dynamic problems inside the main feed water system can be more easily dealt with. This measurement scheme might be implemented in a power plant on a real-time basis without much difficulty. If this could be implemented, valuable information essential for shut-down operations can readily be passed on to the main control room. The feasibility of this implementation was demonstrated by this experimental work.
