The flow and heat transfer characteristics inside a solar chimney power plant system are analyzed in this article. 3-D model with the $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence closure was developed. In this model, to solve the radiative transfer equation the discrete ordinates radiation model was implemented, using a two-band radiation model. To simulate radiation effects from the sun's rays, the solar ray tracing algorithm was coupled to the calculation via a source term in the energy equation. Simulations were carried out for a system with the geometry parameters of the Manzanares power plant. Based on the numerical results, the velocity and temperature distributions were illustrated and the results were validated by comparing with experimental data of the Manzanares prototype power plant. Moreover, temperature profile of the ground surface of the system was illustrated.
The use of renewable energy sources and energy storage systems is increasing due to new policies in the energy industries. However, the increase in distributed generation hinders the reliability of power systems. In order to stabilize power systems, a virtual power plant has been proposed as a novel power grid management system. The virtual power plant plays includes different distributed energy resources and energy storage systems. We define a core virtual power plant technology related to demand response and ancillary service for the cases of Korea, America, and Europe. We also suggest applications of the proposed virtual power plant to the vehicle-to-grid market for restructuring national power industries in Korea.
This study is aimed to construct a marine small hydro power plant using discharge water of fish farm in Jeju Haengwon-ri. The difference of design methods between marine small hydro power plant and land small hydro power plant is to consider the tides. Moreover, ground condition should be examined because gushout sea water comes out from the ground at high tide in Jeju as the ground of Jeju beach consists of basalt stone. From the field test of the turbine generator after construction of the power plant, output power and efficiency of the turbine generator shows good conformance to the required conditions.
This paper proposes supplementary control of conventional coordinated control of a power plant which directly affects network frequency. The supplementary control with dynamic matrix control is applied for 1000 MW power plant with ultra-supercritical (USC) once-through boiler. The supplementary control signal is added to the boiler feedforward signal in the existing coordinated control logic. Therefore, it is a very practical structure that can maintain the existing multi-loop control system. This supplementary controller uses the step response model for the power plant system, and on-line optimization is performed at every sampling step. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed supplementary control in a wide operating range of a practical 1000 MW USC power plant simulator. These results can contribute the stable operation of power system frequency.
A virtual power plant (VPP) technology is a cluster of distributed generation installations. VPP system is that integrates several types of distributed generation sources, so as to give a reliable overall power supply. Virtual power plant systems play a key role in the smart grids concept and the move towards alternative sources of energy. They ensure improved integration of the renewable energy generation into the grids and the electricity market. VPPs not only deal with the supply side, but also help manage demand and ensure reliability of grid functions through demand response (DR) and other load shifting approaches in real time. In this paper, utilizing a variety of distributed generation resources(such as emergency generator, commercial generator, energy storage device), activation scheme of the virtual power plant technology. In addition, through the analysis of the domestic electricity market, it describes a scheme that can be a virtual power plant to participate in electricity market. It attempts to derive the policy support recommendation in order to obtain the basics to the prepared in position of power generation companies for the commercialization of virtual power plant.
The control logic of steam temperature was redesigned, tested and applied to the power plant after its steam temperature equipments had been revised. This power plant use the ancillary gas gotten in the process of making iron in the steel mill. The boiler of power plant has the superheater and reheater to make the superheated steam. The superheater and reheater have the spray valve to control their temperature. The reheater has the gas bypass damper additionally in this plant. The control logics were redesigned in cascade forms and the initial parameters of control logics were calculated from the several step tests. The final parameters could be obtained through the several repeated tests and the feedforward functions were added by temperature deviation and air flow. The power plant is being commercially-operated normally by improved control logics and It is expected that this improved controls help the efficiency improvement and safe operation of plant.
The increase of $CO_2$ emission by increasing of fossil fuel usage has been understood a major cause of global warming. The supply of electric energy is heavily dependent on the massive thermal power and nuclear power plant before developing the renewable energy to supply the electric energy stably at a low price. The large and sound forged components of pressure vessel, turbine and generator are widely used in power plant such as wind power, hydroelectric power generation, nuclear power and thermal power plant. This paper is discussed the trend of manufacturing technology for pressure vessel and turbine to satisfy the required condition of utility company. It is also introduced a strategy of forging industry to cope with carbon tax.
A full-scope replica type simulator whose MCR(main control room) has the same features and operation functions as MCR of the reference power plant has been developed for a fossil power plant. This simulator was developed with the model of Poryung Fossil Power Plant #3,4 which is the standard model of the Korean fossil power plant. It is the first localized simulator for the supercritical, variable boiler pressure type fossil power plant. The simulator provides various kinds of accidents which are in normal plant operation and thus enables operators to recover or reduce possible damages. To design and develop this kind of simulator, we need to integrate high technologies such as system analysis, plant operation and system integration of mechanics, physics, computer science. CASE(Computer Aided Software Engineering) tools were used to develop the dynamic model. This simulator will greatly contribute to the improvement of the safety and efficiency of the fossil power plant by implementing operator training. In this paper, the outline of software and hardware configuration and characteristics of the simulator are described, and the results of 30%, 50%, 75%, 100% load operation test will be discussed.
Electric power industries in several countries are currently undergoing major changes, mainly represented by the privatizations of the power plants and distribution systems. Reliable operations of the power plants directly contribute to the revenue increases of the generation companies in such competitive environments. Strategic optimizations should be performed between the levels of the reliabilities to be maintained and the various preventive maintenance costs, which require the accurate estimations of the power plant reliabilities. However, accurate estimations of the power plant reliabilities are often limited by the lack of accurate power plant failure data. A power plant is not supposed to be failed that often. And if it fails, its impact upon the power system stability is quite substantial in most cases, setting aside the significant revenue losses and lowered company images. Reliability assessment is also important for Independent System Operators(ISO) or Market Operators to properly assess the level of needed compensations for the installed capacity based on the availability of the generation plants. In this paper, we present a power plant reliability estimation technique that can be applied when the failure data is insufficient. Median rank and Weibull distribution are used to accommodate such insufficiency. The Median rank is utilized to derive the cumulative failure probability for each ordered failure. The Weibull distribution is used because of its flexibility of accommodating several different distribution types based on the shape parameter values. The proposed method is applied to small size failure data and its application potential is demonstrated.
Engineering is a sector with more than three times the industrial effectiveness of manufacturing. In the domestic engineering life cycle, the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) phase is a relatively high level of technology. Based on accumulated knowledge of O&M phase, it is necessary to advance operating technology and expand overseas O&M market expenditure. This study is the early stage of knowledge-based power plant O&M service framework reference model. In this study, we propose a conceptual model of architecture framework for power plant O&M. We survey the architecture framework and reference model and propose conceptual model of architecture framework for power plant O&M. The conceptual model of architecture framework for power plant O&M consists of stakeholder, O&M scenario, O&M technology. In particular, the O&M technology is defined as the fourth industrial revolution intelligence information technology. We defined a meta model from the conceptual model to define the power plant O&M architecture framework. In the future, we intend to development an architecture framework from the conceptual model and meta model.
