  • Computer simulations designed to predict technical and financial returns of wind turbine installations are used to make informed investment decisions. These simulations used fixed values to represent real-world variables, while the actual projects can be highly uncertain, resulting in predictions that are less accurate and less useful. In this article, by modifying a popular wind power simulation sourced from the American Wind Energy Association to use Monte Carlo techniques in its calculations, the authors have proposed a way to improve simulation usability by producing probability distributions of likely outcomes, which can be used to draw broader, more useful conclusions about the simulated project.

Background: Technically, it is necessary that operators adapt themselves to computerized and advanced techniques to operate the main control rooms safely in nuclear power plant in Korea. The more main control rooms are digitalized, the more important for operators to have high team performance it is. Method: This paper analyzes team process through literatures review and elicits team performance shaping factor. Especially, the objective of this research is to elicit communication using common team performance shaping factors. Results: This study has found communication through team performance shaping factors in Main Control Room of the SMART. Conclusion: This paper can offer a starting point for team communication, which can use team performance shaping factor framework that are emerging in these new nuclear power plant. Application: As a result, I expect that the evaluation communication for MCR operator's team performance will lead the operating techniques in nuclear power industry internationally.

  • With the aid of fast computing power, resampling techniques are being introduced for simulation output analysis (SOA). Autocorrelation among the output from discrete-event simulation prohibit the direct application of resampling schemes (Threshold bootstrap, Binary bootstrap, Stationary bootstrap, etc) extend its usage to time-series data such as simulation output. We present a new method for inference from a regenerative process, regenerative bootstrap, that equals or exceeds the performance of classical regenerative method and approximation regeneration techniques. Regenerative bootstrap saves computation time and overcomes the problem of scarce regeneration cycles. Computational results are provided using M/M/1 model.

  • Energy consumption is an important design parameter for battery-operated embedded systems. Dynamic power management is one of the most well-known low-power design techniques. This paper proposes an online realtime scheduling algorithm, which we call energy-aware realtime scheduling using slack stealing (EARSS). The proposed algorithm gives the highest priority to the task with the largest degree of device overlap when the slack time exists. Scheduling result enables an efficient power management by reducing the number of state transitions. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can save the energy by 23% on average compared to the DPM-enabled system scheduled by the EDF algorithm.

  • Neural stimulating implantable medical devices (IMDs) have been widely used to treat neurological diseases or interface with sensory feedback for amputees or patients suffering from severe paralysis. More recent IMDs, such as retinal implants or brain-computer interfaces, demand higher performance to enable sophisticated therapies, while consuming power at higher orders of magnitude to handle more functions on a larger scale at higher rates, which limits the ability to supply the IMDs with primary batteries. Inductive power transmission across the skin is a viable solution to power up an IMD, while it demands high power efficiencies at every power delivery stage for safe and effective stimulation without increasing the surrounding tissue's temperature. This paper reviews various wireless neural stimulating systems and their power management techniques to maximize IMD power efficiency. We also explore both wireless electrical and optical stimulation mechanisms and their power requirements in implantable neural interface applications.

  • The era of the Internet of Things (IoT) is upon us. In this era, minimizing power consumption becomes a primary concern for system-on-chip designers. While traditional power minimization and dynamic power management (DPM) techniques have been heavily explored to improve the power efficiency of devices inside very large-scale integration (VLSI) platforms, there is one critical factor that is often overlooked, which is the power conversion efficiency of a power delivery network (PDN). This paper is a tutorial that focuses on the power conversion efficiency of the PDN, and introduces novel methods to improve it. Circuit-, architecture-, and system-level approaches are presented to optimize PDN designs, while case studies for three different VSLI platforms validate the efficacy of the introduced approaches.

  • The electric power industry have recently been building out Smart Grids, a two-way electricity grid that connects power consumers and producers to a network that enables one to respond quickly to any eventuality. The construction of a two-way electricity grid means that the power control process becomes unified, from what used to be separate processes that originate individually from the consumption phase and the production and supply phases. The role of power control that takes place within each section of the power system may be independent. However, this does not mean the independent control sections are operated individually, but are configured to meet a single target and purpose. Each control section possesses enough degree of independency to respond to eventualities that may occur within different stages of the power system, but at the same time, possesses unified system elements for the stability of the entire power system. From this perspective, Smart Grids are widely regarded as the most rational power industry operation plan. A variety of different control and communication systems can be applied for an effective deployment of Smart Grids. Recently, we have seen systems such as PMS(Power Management System) and PAS(Process Automation System) applied in the deployment of Smart Grids, which are developed from the techniques utilized in the industry. The PMS is attracting particular attention for its power operations management ability. In this study, we propose plans for improvement in the rational development of power system controls through case studies of live PMS operations.
