Development of a Damage Monitoring Technique for Jacket-type Offshore Structures using Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors (광섬유 브래그 격자 센서를 활용한 재킷식 해양구조물의 손상 감지 기법 개발)

  • Development of smart sensors for structural health monitoring and damage detection has been advanced remarkably in recent years. Nowadays fiber optic sensors, especially fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, have attracted many researchers' interests for their attractive features, such as multiplexing capability, durability, lightweight, electromagnetic interference immunity. In this paper, a damage detection approach of jacket-type offshore structures by principal component analysis (PCA) technique using FBG sensors are presented. An experimental study for a tidal current power plant structure as one of the jacket-type offshore structures was conducted to investigate the feasibility of the proposed method for damage monitoring. It has been found that the PCA technique can efficiently eliminate environmental effects from measured data by FBG sensors, resulting more damage-sensitive features under various environmental variations.

Electrochemical Characteristics of Assembled-Graphite/DSA Electrode for Redox Flow Battery (Redox Flow Battery용 일체화된 흑연/DSA 전극의 전기화학적 특성)

  • An assembled-graphite/DSA(Dimensionally Stable Anode) was prepared using graphite powder to increase durability and energy efficiency of redox flow battery and investigated its electrochemical properties in vanadium-based electrolyte. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) was carried out in the voltage range of -0.7V and 1.6V vs. SCE at 5 mV/sec scan rate to analyze vanadium redox reaction. From the CV results, the assembled-graphite/DSA electrode showed a fast couple reaction and good reversibility in 2M $VOSO_4$ + 2.5 M $H_2SO_4$ electrolyte. Therefore, it has been expected that this electrode increases power density as well as energy density of redox flow battery.

Fundamental Study on the properties of concrete incoporating pond-ash as fine aggregate (잔골재로서 매립회를 혼입한 콘크리트의 특성에 관한 기초 연구)

  • With an increase of power consumption due to industrial development, the generation of coal ash has been growing tremendously and, accordingly, environmental concern over its disposal and insufficiency in disposal sites have been raised as other issues to be considered. In order to examine the usability of coal ash as an aggregate for concrete, such fundamental information as slump, air contents, mechanical properties and durability of concrete has been secured by way of setting 10, 20 or 30 wt. % of fine aggregate alternative rate of ash and identifying its basic properties at each pond-ash contents. The results of the study indicate that slump and air content heavily depend on the site of generation, and this might greatly influence on the content of fine particles of the ash. It is also shown that its freezing and thawing resistance tends to be relatively lower than that of Plain, which requires comprehensive examination over next few years on the absorptiveness and properties of mixed water of the ash collected from each disposal site.

Influence of Carbonation and Freezing-thawing on the Chloride Diffusion in Concrete (탄산화 및 동결융해 현상이 콘크리트 중의 염소이온 확산에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • Recently, the corrosion of concrete structures has received great attention related with the deterioration of sea-side structures, such as new airport, bridges, and nuclear power plants. In this regards, many studies have been done on the chloride attack in concrete structures. However, those studies were confined mostly to the single deterioration due to chloride only, although actual environment is rather of combined type. The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to explore the influences of carbonation and freezing-thawing action to chloride attack in concrete structures. The test results indicate that the chloride penetration is more pronounced than the case of single chloride attack when the carbonation process is combined with the chloride attack. It is supposed that the chloride ion concentration of carbonation region is higher than the sound region because of the separation of fixed salts. Though the use of fly ash pronounces the chloride ion concentration in surface, amounts of chloride ion penetration into deep region decreases with the use of fly ash. The small reduction of relative dynamic elastic modulus induced from freezing-thawing increases the chloride ion penetration depths much. The present study allows more realistic assessment of durability for such concrete structures which are subjected to combined attacks of both chlorides and carbonation or freezing-thawing but the future studies for combined environment will assure the precise assessment.

Control of Explosion Behavior in Micro Hole Using UV Laser on LTCC Green Sheets Containing Carbon Particles (카본을 첨가한 LTCC 그린 시트에서 UV 레이저를 이용한 미세 홀 터짐 현상 제어)

  • Hole explosion behaviors were observed during drilling fine holes with laser beam on the LTCC green bar of $320{\mu}m$ thick after lamination of green sheets prepared by tape casting of thick film process. The incidence of these hole explosions was inversely proportional to hole sizes. The incidence of hole explosion was 20 % number of hole with the size of $60{\mu}m$ exploded for the UV radiation, while the explosion did not appear for hole sizes over $100{\mu}m$. To prevent hole explosion behavior during laser-drilling of fine holes, carbon black powder was added as an additive in the LTCC composition, which has superior thermal durability. As a consequence, hole explosion rate was suppressed to 0.8 % for the hole size of $50{\mu}m$ green sheet with the carbon black amount of 10 weight % and the laser power of 3 watt. Added carbon is thought to reduce the heat-affected region during laser drilling.

Experimental and Numerical Assessment of Liquid Water Exhaust Performance of Flow Channels in PEM Fuel Cells (고분자 전해질 연료전지 유로의 수분배출 특성의 실험 및 해석적 평가)

  • Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells are a promising technology for short-term power generation required in residential and automobile applications. Proper management of water has been found to be essential for improving the performance and durability of PEM fuel cells. This study investigated the liquid water exhaust capabilities of various flow channels having different geometries and surface properties. Three-pass serpentine flow fields were prepared by patterning channels of 1 mm or 2 mm width onto hydrophilic Acrylic plates or hydrophobic Teflon plates, and the behaviors of liquid water in those flow channels were experimentally visualized. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were also conducted to quantitatively assess the liquid water exhaust capabilities of flow channels for PEM fuel cells. Numerical results showed that hydrophobic flow channels have better liquid water exhaust capabilities than hydrophilic flow channels. Flow channels with curved corners showed less droplet stagnation than the channels with sharp corners. It was also found that a smaller width is desirable for hydrophobic flow channels while a larger width is desirable for hydrophilic ones. The above results were explained as being due to the different droplet morphologies in hydrophobic and hydrophilic channels.

Effects of Fillers on Fatigue Crack Growth Rate of Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (충전제가 EPDM의 피로균열 성장속도에 미치는 영향)

  • Crack growth characteristics of elastomeric materials are an important factor determining the strength and durability. In this study, the fatigue crack growth characteristic of filled EPDM compounds with different reinforcing fillers, such as silica and carbon black, was investigated using a newly designed tester. Frequency and test temperature had significant effects on the fatigue crack growth. The crack growth rate decreased with increasing frequency and the rate increased with increasing temperature. A power law relationship between the tearing energy and crack growth was observed for filled EPDM compounds. The crack growth rate reduced with increasing filler contents. Silica filled EPDM showed a better fatigue resistance than carbon black filled EPDM. The crack growth rate of silica filled EPDM decreased up to 30 phr and increased again at 50 phr. The formation of microductile type pits was observed on the fatigue-failure surface of unfilled EPDM, and relatively coarse surface with randomly distributed tear lines was observed on the failure surface of silica filled EPDM.

  • Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are regarded as a promising alternative to replace the existing automotive power sources. To get high performance and long-term durability for PEMFC systems, novel water management is essential. To this end, a comprehensive understanding of dynamics of the liquid water droplets within an operating PEMFC plays an important role. In this work, direct visualization of dynamic behaviors of the water droplet in the ex situ unit flow channel of a PEMFC including gas diffusion layer (GDL) is carried out as one of the fundamental studies for novel water management. Water droplet dynamics such as the movement and growth of liquid water droplets are mainly presented. Effects of GDL characteristics and inlet air flow rate on the water droplet transport and its removal from the flow channel are also discussed. The data obtained in this study can contribute to build up the fundamental operating strategy including balanced water removal capacity for automotive PEMFC systems.

Effects of Partial Substitution of CeO2 with M2O3 (M = Yb, Gd, Sm) on Electrical Degradation of Sc2O3 and CeO2 Co-doped ZrO2

  • Scandia-stabilized zirconia co-doped with $CeO_2$ is a promising electrolyte for intermediate temperature SOFC, but still shows rapid degradation during a long-term operation. In this study, $CeO_2$ (1 mol%) as a stabilizer is partially substituted with lanthanum oxides ($M_2O_3$, M=Yb, Gd, Sm) to stabilize a cubic phase and thus durability in reducing atmosphere. 0.5M0.5Ce10ScSZ electrolytes were prepared by solid state reaction and sintered at $1450^{\circ}C$ for 10 h to produce dense ceramic specimens. With addition of the lanthanum oxide, 0.5M0.5Ce10ScSZ showed lower degradation rates than 1Ce10ScSZ. Since $Gd_2O_3$ showed the highest ionic conductivity among the co-dopants, an electrolyte-supported cell with 0.5Gd0.5Ce10ScSZ was prepared to compare its long-term performance with that of 1Ce10ScSZ-based cell. Maximum power density of 0.5Gd0.5Ce10ScSZ-based cell was degraded by about 2.3% after 250 h, which was much lower than 1Ce10ScSZ-based cell (4.2%).

Study on the Change of Physical Characteristics by Polarity and Additives of SiC DPF Binder for Diesel Engine Application (디젤엔진에 적용하기 위한 SiC DPF용 접합제의 극성 및 첨가물에 따른 물리적 특성 변화에 관한 연구)

  • Fine dust has become a significant social problem. Diesel engines are used as the main propulsion power source in ships. This study introduces a diesel particulate filter (DPF) that is used as an exhaust after-treatment system for diesel engines to reduce particulate matter known as diesel fine dust. Two materials are used for the DPF: Cordierite and silicon carbide (SiC). In this study, to improve the physical properties of the binder used in the SiC DPF, cordialite was used instead of the SiC-based materials used as the conventional binder to evaluate the thermal durability against high-temperature deformation through the change of the coefficient of thermal expansion. In addition, the physical properties of the silica sol, as a main component of the base coating solution for determining the bond between the binder and the segment, were confirmed. Based on this, the change effect of the binder physical properties was confirmed through experiments by either adding a silane coupling agent or SiC to increase the reactivity of the silica sol.
